Short film competition Yarns has revealed the unsigned filmmakers selected to bring their visions to life under the competition's bold theme this year.The&nbsp;finalists are the director/producer duo Ciara O'Rourke &amp; Jack Clarke, Tom Tennant and&nbsp;Naomi Pallas, who have been selected to make films on the subject of DISINFO.&nbsp;The not-for-profit competition organised by Homespun -&nbsp;the new talent division of Stitch Editing -&nbsp;that champions emerging UK talent with full creative and post-production support to transform their ideas into fully realised short films, received a record number of submissions for films tackling this year's theme. The three finalists were then chosen from a shortlist of ten submissions.Each finalist will receive £2,000 funding and post-production assistance from Homespun, and post partners Sine Audio Post, Absolute, Freefolk and Nineteentwenty. The competition is also backed by&nbsp;Kodak, APA&nbsp;and Sine Audio Post.Ciara O’Rourke &amp; Jack Clarke will bring their twist on the end of the world to their short&nbsp;Don’t Believe A Word I Say. O'Rourke is a director and award-winning production designer from Doncaster, known for her surreal, stylistic and heartfelt visual storytelling. A BAFTA mentee with a growing reputation, she excels in finding magic in the rubble.&nbsp;Clarke is a Salford-based producer whose work spans indie features, investigative docs and grassroots culture. His work spotlights the grit, grief and brilliance of everyday lives.Tom Tennant's comedy short&nbsp;Angling For Love&nbsp;will explore the fishier sides of modern dating. He is a&nbsp;Somerset-born up and coming filmmaker whose wit is as sharp as his eye. Yarns announces finalists for 2025 competition on subject of DISINFO

For the returning Maribou State, Brazilian filmmaker&nbsp;Giordano Maestrelli tells a story of lost love by employing some of the oldest techniques in cinema within a bold new structure.&nbsp;The subject of the film for All I Need is the complexity of a broken relationship, told through parallel timelines. At the centre of the story is a couple - their past life unfolds through fragments and the present plays out in the background where their lost love echoes. And&nbsp;to allow the flashback story of the couple's love affair to coexist within the present, Maestrelli&nbsp;built a custom zoetrope device inspired by early motion picture pioneer&nbsp;Eadweard Muybridge.In this meticulous undertaking the director first shot the story on 16mm film, then printed into more than 2500 still frames, and re-sequenced it through the custom circular machine in a stop-motion-like technique. Shooting over 23 hours, thousands of delicate frames were replaced one by one while a crew member manually turned the machine at a millimetric degree, and another captured the action.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;The zoetrope enables one narrative to take place inside a contained, looping environment, which set out to resemble the way unprocessed emotions often linger. Meanwhile, behind it, the same setting appears as a ghostly representation of what is no more.&nbsp;With a visual language rooted in early cinema but a vision firmly fixed on today’s music video aesthetics,&nbsp;All I Need&nbsp;is a technically-daring love letter for the song that&nbsp;features on Maribou State’s latest album&nbsp;Hallucinating Love, their first since a multiple-year long hiatus following bandmember Chris Davids’ rare and debilitating brain illness.&nbsp;The result is a mesmerising and haunting&nbsp;blend of cinematic craftsmanship, memories and emotion.

HAIM return with a sumptuous video by Camille Summers Valli for the first single from the sisters' first album since 2020.It's Summers Valli's first promos since her acclaimed work for METTE in 2023 (including Mama's Eyes, winner of Video of the Year at the UKMVAs). As with those for METTE, the director employs her considerable powers here to draw the viewer into a powerful and intimate experience with the band's&nbsp;lead singer Alana Haim.The video for Relationships brings us into the world of Alana and her sisters - and into the euphoria of Alana's affair with her lover, played by Drew Starkey. This is portrayed at a cinematic level consistent with a movie or high quality TV drama, and&nbsp;HAIM are clearly comfortable in this territory. After all, they have been regular collaborators with&nbsp;Paul Thomas Anderson and Jake Schreier.But there is nothing in the sister's fine canon of music videos which is quite as frank and sensual as this, nor does it forget its function as a music video. The effect is stunning.&nbsp;

London-based Romanian director Mihai Feflea directs an absorbing&nbsp;promo for singer-songwriter and rapper Killa Fonic.&nbsp;Shot in Bucharest on Kodak 16mm film, the video for the Romanian artist's track Păsări Migratoare showcases the artist's&nbsp;multiplicity of alter-egos, as Feflea crafts a stark yet immersive world, where shifting environments and characterisations merge into abstract narrative setups.&nbsp;Inspired by Jean Luc Godard's colour montage and Hong Kong cinema of the 2000s, the visual has a textural, grungy aesthetic, elevated by the idiosyncratic vignettes. And its all about his dance&nbsp;- a combination of child-friendly teapot-arm shapes with vagely obscene hip thrusts - captured in a series of obscure locations, from alleyways and graveyards to zebra crossings and petting zoos.Throughout, the band are performing the track on a distant skyscraper rooftop - but Longden has a final surprise in store.“With the entire budget spent on 16mm film, we were lucky to be blessed with the lead’s newly acclaimed ‘Mighty Light Hip Thrust,’ also known as the ‘Wonder Thrust'," says Longden. Leo Villares and Victor Nauwynck venture into Rocky Horror territory with their visually inventive romp into the world of mad scientists and their botched creations for English multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Ed Tullett - aka&nbsp;Lowswimmer.In the video for IRL we enter the depths of a factory-turned-laboratory, to discover the twin creations of the latest cloning experiment by a trio of suspiciously excitable white-coated scientists. And then the girls are&nbsp;introduced to their 'siblings' - the results of the scientists' previous experiments.[imgtoken data:1]With events escalating from the girls' initial wonder at their setting, to cartoonish body horror and beyond, Villares and Nauwynck establish a wild comic tone and sense of the unpredictable in this low budget gem, summed up in a remarkable&nbsp;sequence involving both a regurgitation and a tug of war. It's impossible to tear your eyes away from.&nbsp;This is an impressively well-crafted production, with excellent practical effects, SFX make-up and cinematography, helmed by a UK-based Brazilian/Belgian directing partnership with a strong vision drawn from a wealth of cinematic influences. And it was&nbsp;shot in Pope's Yard Brewery in Watford. Excellent work.

Björn Rühmann has collaborated with Paul Kalkbrenner and Mother Berlin to create a stunning 12 minute music short film to accompany the&nbsp;electronic music icon's new two song EP. It's the intriguing story, in two distinct parts,&nbsp;of a strange&nbsp;character as he comes into contact with the real, mostly hostile world: the eponymous Kabelmann.Filmed in Manchester and Berlin, with outstanding 16mm cinematography by DoP Krzysztof Trojnar (known for his work on Baby Reindeer) and&nbsp;with&nbsp;a magnetic central performance by&nbsp;Kevin Howarth as Kabelmann,&nbsp;Björn Rühmann has created a highly distinctive cinematic experience with KABELMANN. With the creative originating at&nbsp;Mother Berlin, and produced by SMUGGLER in London and Berlin-based&nbsp;Zauberberg, it was premiered at&nbsp;this year's Ciclope Festival earlier this month.[imgtoken data:1]KABELMANN is surreal, darkly comic, poignant and at times harrowing, as we follow the fortunes of Kabelmann,&nbsp;an individual with 20 metre cables flowing from his body, as he emerges from the forest for his first encounters with normal people.&nbsp;The film is&nbsp;also grounded in a analogue aesthetic, using practical effects that contributes to the overall effect and power of this 'fish out of water' story - including a costume worn by lead actor Howarth featuring 20-meter cables. And Paul Kalkbrenner renamed the names of the two songs on the EP,&nbsp;originally bearing different titles, to Kabelmann 1&nbsp;and Kabelmann 2.&nbsp;Part one of the film is the emotional story arc of an enigmatic outsider. Kabelmann searches for human connection, hindered by a mysterious energy flowing through his cables. Small flashes of the Kalkbrenner himself hint at the source behind Kabelmann's energy. The rhythm of Kalkbrenner's song pushes the story forward. Most encounters on Kabelmann's journey evoke rejection, aggression, and fear – except one with a mysterious woman in a diner, opening a hopeful path for our hero.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]A short interlude where the artist appears again leads into the second part of the music short film. This chapter catapults viewers into a dreamlike afterlife juxtaposed with a violent showdown, leaving Kabelmann's fate ambiguous. The second song by Kalkbrenner serves as the perfect stage for the contrast between the story layers with its optimistic spirit.Paul Kalkbrenner briefed Mother Berlin to come up with the idea for the film, and&nbsp;Stefan Witteman, Creative Director of Mother Berlin, says: "This project was a dream brief. The idea of this character, Kabelmann, was truly inspired by the artist's analogue ways of working. Bringing Kabelmann to life, from the story arc to all visual aspects, was a truly collaborative effort."Mother brought Björn Rühmann into the project who explains: "The process of finding our Kabelmann's destiny took forever – in a great way.
