Björn Rühmann has collaborated with Paul Kalkbrenner and Mother Berlin to create a stunning 12 minute music short film to accompany the&nbsp;electronic music icon's new two song EP. It's the intriguing story, in two distinct parts,&nbsp;of a strange&nbsp;character as he comes into contact with the real, mostly hostile world: the eponymous Kabelmann.Filmed in Manchester and Berlin, with outstanding 16mm cinematography by DoP Krzysztof Trojnar (known for his work on Baby Reindeer) and&nbsp;with&nbsp;a magnetic central performance by&nbsp;Kevin Howarth as Kabelmann,&nbsp;Björn Rühmann has created a highly distinctive cinematic experience with KABELMANN. With the creative originating at&nbsp;Mother Berlin, and produced by SMUGGLER in London and Berlin-based&nbsp;Zauberberg, it was premiered at&nbsp;this year's Ciclope Festival earlier this month.[imgtoken data:1]KABELMANN is surreal, darkly comic, poignant and at times harrowing, as we follow the fortunes of Kabelmann,&nbsp;an individual with 20 metre cables flowing from his body, as he emerges from the forest for his first encounters with normal people.&nbsp;The film is&nbsp;also grounded in a analogue aesthetic, using practical effects that contributes to the overall effect and power of this 'fish out of water' story - including a costume worn by lead actor Howarth featuring 20-meter cables. And Paul Kalkbrenner renamed the names of the two songs on the EP,&nbsp;originally bearing different titles, to Kabelmann 1&nbsp;and Kabelmann 2.&nbsp;Part one of the film is the emotional story arc of an enigmatic outsider. Kabelmann searches for human connection, hindered by a mysterious energy flowing through his cables. Small flashes of the Kalkbrenner himself hint at the source behind Kabelmann's energy. The rhythm of Kalkbrenner's song pushes the story forward. Most encounters on Kabelmann's journey evoke rejection, aggression, and fear – except one with a mysterious woman in a diner, opening a hopeful path for our hero.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]A short interlude where the artist appears again leads into the second part of the music short film. This chapter catapults viewers into a dreamlike afterlife juxtaposed with a violent showdown, leaving Kabelmann's fate ambiguous. The second song by Kalkbrenner serves as the perfect stage for the contrast between the story layers with its optimistic spirit.Paul Kalkbrenner briefed Mother Berlin to come up with the idea for the film, and&nbsp;Stefan Witteman, Creative Director of Mother Berlin, says: "This project was a dream brief. The idea of this character, Kabelmann, was truly inspired by the artist's analogue ways of working. Bringing Kabelmann to life, from the story arc to all visual aspects, was a truly collaborative effort."Mother brought Björn Rühmann into the project who explains: "The process of finding our Kabelmann's destiny took forever – in a great way. Moses Sumney marks his return to music,&nbsp;after taking time to make his film and TV acting debuts, with a wonderful new single&nbsp;and a superb&nbsp;self-directed music video.The video for Vintage bears the hallmarks of his past directorial work for videos from his last album græ – the auteurial lushness of his live concert film Blackalachia, the comedic surrealism of Cut Me,&nbsp;and the kinetic physicality of Virile. Dan Fromhart directs a ruminative promo for Seattle band No Floor, capturing the group in a&nbsp;dreamlike fashion, opting for textural, abstract shots&nbsp;as&nbsp;opposed to direct-to-camera performance.&nbsp;For the majority of the video for Keep Time, backs are turned, guitars hide faces and the location plays a big part in the frame, adding to the transcendent, almost otherworldly vibe.&nbsp;A powerful, introspective visual that encapsulates the mood of the track."We shot this video on 16mm Kodak film on an unseasonably cold Seattle day," explains Fromhart, who shot the video at the Georgetown Steam Plant museum in Seattle."Our location naturally became its own character in the video," he adds. "The concrete building, built in 1906 housed secret shows in the 80s and 90s, most famously for Steve Albini's band Big Black."&nbsp;

Harvey Pearson directs an evocative promo for sister-duo Sarah Julia and their&nbsp;song Caingorms, filmed in the eponymous Scottish mountain range.&nbsp;In the video the sisters are joined by&nbsp;an enigmatic (and very hairy)&nbsp;figure who dwells unobtrusively in the area. He becomes their guide as they retrace paths on the hillsides they have walked many times before. As they explain this symbolic figure&nbsp;has deep significance for them.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;“The Cairngorms are a place our Dad used to take us hiking when we were younger," they explain.&nbsp;"It holds a memory of a version of him that we try to hold on to.”&nbsp;This sense of memory and wistfulness is visualised through tender, emotional vignettes, which blur reality and fiction with creative flair. Mihai Feflea directs a super-vibrant promo for alt-rock project&nbsp;Tummyache.&nbsp;Inspired by the films of&nbsp;Ingmar Bergman and Terrence Malick, the surreal&nbsp;visual for Circling The Drain&nbsp;was shot on 16mm Kodak Vision3 250D and on the Éclair NPR 16mm cine camera,&nbsp;an important part of the cinéma vérité movement in France.Featuring an abstract amalgam of beachside setups, the video follows two characters traversing a picturesque landscape. Their relationship and connection are kept vague, and any narrative elements serve more as connecting tissue between the eccentric visual moments.&nbsp;There is beauty in mystery, and this video by Mihai Feflea is a perfect example of that - and the aesthetic is gorgeously executed, with saturated colours and a nostalgic, unique feel throughout.&nbsp;

Teenage love fails to run smoothly in Ethan &amp; Tom's excellent take on a high school musical for Tendai.A frosty moment between Tendai and his girlfriend - played by&nbsp;Sephora Parish - is played out in the halls of a London school, in a series of well-crafted sequences that involve a sizeable supporting cast.It's of a piece with the directing duo's facility with experimental camera techniques, with a constantly moving camera, which ends up rotating around the couple.But this is also arguably Ethan &amp; Tom's most sophisticated video so far in terms of execution, with an element of dramatic tension and a proper pop video feel in terms of scale and look. A real step-up for the talented directing duo.
