Depeche Mode are back, with a surprise: Heaven, first single from forthcoming album Delta Machine, is a mighty pop tune, and Timothy Saccenti's video is a straight-ahead performance video of the band, shot appropriately enough in an abandoned church in New Orleans, embellished with live projections and imagery that touch upon a voodoo theme. 
The video followed the band's collaboration with Tim on another project towards the end of last year - <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watchv=NihMVuspKQw" target="_blank">effectively a teaser for the new album</a>. "Depeche Mode approached me to direct the video Heaven" as a continuation of the campaign we began with our studio film for their track Angel," Tim explains. "The album is a mix of blues and electronics, and that was my starting point for the concept. This was to be the band's first proper performance video in ages so the location was very important." 
Tim reveals that the band felt that voodoo was at the root of the songs on the album, where "blues meet Kraftwerk" - hence the album being called Delta Machine. "In order to delve into the voodoo vibe we travelled to New Orleans to soak it up and find a suitable locale... it in the end being a beautiful abandoned church," he says. 
"After studying various variations on the Heaven theme, I came up with a concept that mixed a symbolic story with hints of voodoo and imagery, keeping in mind the band's rich visual history, but updating it with my own twist."

The band perform the song in a house in the teeth of a ferocious dust storm - so bad they momentarily become dust themselves - until the sheer power of This Ladder Is Ours drives the storm away. It's a cinematic departure from Greg's in-camera VFX videos - but this was largely shot in-camera too. 
The video was shot in a house in Agua Dulce, CA (an hour's drive north of LA) the band performing amid 'movie dirt' blown by giant fans. The effect as an accompaniment to a big performance, is tremendous, although the band are probably still cleaning the dust out of their ears... After his amazing jelly beans video for Kina Grannis's In Your Arms, another marvellous live action/stop motion animation by Greg Jardin - this time for Joey Ramone's New York City, featuring the city and its inhabitants, including musicians, comedians and other New York celebs - plus a few faces from the NYC punk scene.
Greg - a huge Ramones fan - was given the chance to direct a video for the first single from Joey Ramone's second posthumously released solo album, and it was an opportunity he could not pass up, in spite of the numerous challenges, including financial. The idea was key - it uses lots of New Yorkers and the city itself in a irresistable rhythm - each face on screen, turning into the next person, while the camera advances through numerous New York streets through at least three boroughs... 
Shot in the height of the sweltering summer, it took three weeks, over a 100 cameos - including a fair number of famous faces, who gave up 30 minutes or so of their time as Greg's camera hopped around several miles of the city. These include bandmate Tommy Ramone, brother Mickey Leigh, celeb chef Anthony Bourdain, comedians Kristin Schaal and Reggie Watts, and musicians Andrew WK and Matt and Kim. 
Importantly everyone gets the same time than anyone else (apart from Joey's brother Mickey, who starts and ends the journey). This is absolutely right for the spirit of the song - everyone is in it together.

Tim Saccenti's video for Yeasayer's Longevity is a straightforward performance video with a difference. It appears to last nearly a lifetime...
Yeasayer lay down Longevity in their recording studio with Tim cameoing as their producer himself. But singer Chris Keating undergoes a remarkable transformation during the performance, thanks to a beautifully calibrated mixture of in-camera and post effects work.
"It's actually a combo of makeup, prosthetics, a real skull, a 3D skull, an amazing tracking an post team and a ton of flame," Tim explains. "We were trying to keep it as practical as possible, nearly comedic in a way, which is much harder than you'd think!"

Just like the Johnny Cash Project and Wilderness, this combines an immediate interactive experience for the user with the ability to make a contribution to an ongoing creative project. With Johnny Cash it was drawings, and with Wilderness it was writing postcards. With 3 Dreams its the ability to build models in 3D, with groundbreaking software built into the website - courtesy of Google. 
As with the previous two, 3 Dreams Of Black has been developed in collaboration with Aaron Koblin of the Google Creative Lab, and as with The Wilderness Downtown it involves brand new Google-developed technology - and best enjoyed via Chrome, Google's own browser. 
That technology is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebGL" target="_blank">WebGL</a>, which brings hardware-accelerated 3D graphics to the browser. WebGL in modern browsers like Chrome enables users to interact with 3D experiences with no need for additional software. What's more Google has also made all the code <a href="http://www.ro.me/tech" target="_blank">completely open and available for experimentation</a>. 
The 'video' part of 3 Dreams of Black is a voyage through three dreamworlds of Temple - a girl born after the Apocalypse, told through rich 2D drawings and animations that are interspersed with interactive 3D sequences. At various points in this web experience, users can take control with their computer's mouse for a journey through the unfolding narrative. In addition, users are able to contribute to the dream by creating their own relics using the 3D model creator.


Some of the best user creations will be integrated into the experience and become a part of others' "3 Dreams" exploration. For Milk, this film experience is just the first stage of a longterm project to develop ROME - featuring Jack White and (as on this track) Norah Jones on vocals - as a 'transmedia' audio-visual experience. 
"This is the first chapter of a really exciting journey," he says. "I have a philosophy about telling stories through multiple channels, which is a big part of this project. We are far-more-sophisticated media-consuming beings than we were ten years ago. We have greater capacity for tracking complex stories on multiple platforms for longer periods of time."

"3 Dreams Of Black" - an interactive music video for Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi's Black by Chris Milk

Katy Perry&#39;s third video from Teenage Dream is also a mega-tie in with a huge Euro-brand.
Through a personal call to action by Katy in August, her fans were asked to share their special &#39;spark&#39; for a chance to participate in the making of the official video for Firework. 
	This recruitment campaign ran online through dedicated &#39;Katy&#39;s Project&#39; websites (www.katysproject.com) and other social media initiatives. Participating Deutsche Telekom (aka T-Mobile) markets included Germany, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Macedonia and Montenegro.
The campaign generated more than 38,000 entries, and 250 winning fans were awarded the opportunity to participate in the video. Throughout the campaign thousands of fans posted messages and comments on fan pages while generating an organic following for the campaign. Voting was a significant part of deciding the final participants and Katy herself chose some of the winners for special roles in the video.
The journey of participants from all eight markets was filmed along with their involvement in the video shoot itself, which took place over 4 days in Budapest. The content is now being rolled out in both brand and product ads - along with a 3-minute documentary.
Commissioned by Saatchis in London, DARYL at Pulse directed the documentary and additional footage of Katy&#39;s sparky fans as part of Saatchis&#39; Life&#39;s For Sharing T-Mobile campaign.
The video itself - with its uplifting message celebrating individuality magician skills and sparklers inevitably bursting from Katy&#39;s boobs - was directed over four days in Budapest by Dave Meyers.

When you follow the instructions, this takes you somewhere you really don't expect to go: back where you grew up. And type in your address and, thanks to Google Earth, you can go anywhere you like, to the tune of Arcade Fire's We Used To Wait. And then you can write to your childhood self, and then more stuff happens, and over and above that, this is a multi-image experience, courtesy of the fact it was programmed in cutting edge code HTML5. 

It is, undoubtedly, a brilliant way of showing the genius of Google Earth (and one does wonder, is the recommendation that the whole thing plays better on Chrome actually true). But this is just not an ad for Google and some of its works. The technology is harnessed to serve a very strong idea - and then it's executed to a level that it can hardly fail to draw an emotional, very personal response. A milestone.
