The threat of conflict hangs over a young girl's head, in Paola Kudacki's affecting promo for Waiting On A War - her second video for Foo Fighters.&nbsp;Drawing parallels between intergenerational fears of war and destruction, the video opens with a teenage girl - played by&nbsp;Thalia Gerloff - pacing about a desolate wasteland, isolated and broken.&nbsp;Intercutting nostalgic memories of carefree times, the concept builds to a riotous crescendo, with the younger generation fighting back against outdated institutions and ideals.&nbsp;It's a striking piece, anchored by gloomy, haunting cinematography and an overarching expectation of disaster. Drake&#39;s latest video outing with &#39;Hold On, We&#39;re Going Home&#39; is wholly of another era. Forget about the &#39;Miami, 1985&#39; title card that starts the whole thing off, or the unmistakable Miami Vice meets Scarface vibes. There&#39;s more at work under that superficial surface than you&#39;d think.Let&#39;s get one thing clear first; it&#39;s ridiculous. It just is. Director Bill Pope, better known as DP on The Matrix series, Scott Pilgrim vs the World and a few of Raimi&#39;s Spider-Man films, spends the first third of the video setting the stage with Drake, A$AP and crew celebrating on the eve of some successful heist. A whole third of the video. Before the track ever kicks in. This all precipitates a story of how Drake&#39;s girl gets kidnapped as retribution before the crew assembles a Matrix-level amount of guns and rolls up to a shipping yard for their heroic shootout. Drake saves his girl, who stands there, shivering in the Key winds while wearing pretty much nothing but stockings.The entire video, from production to acting to effects is laced with so much unabashed hamminess you can&#39;t help but say yeah, alright, let&#39;s do this thing. It&#39;s hard to see how any other concept could have possibly worked. Even the track itself is a throwback; once that bass kicks in, you can just picture the out-of-nowhere Canadian production duo Majid Jordan hunched over their laptops, recreating some imagined version of Q and Jackson tweaking that console at Westlake.There&#39;s a reason that something like Miami Vice is great without ever being great, and why the preposterous setups to some of the most memorable hip hop videos of the 90s created an aesthetic that spread like wildfire. Like it or not, as absurd as it is and whether it was by pure accident or utter genius, &#39;Hold On We&#39;re Going Home&#39; just nails it.&nbsp;

Jake Nava's video for Kanye's Monster is a perturbing mix of horror and high fashion. Kanye as a very dapper Dr Frankenstein, who is about to use some very dead models to fashion his creature, with partners-in-crime Niki Minaj, Rick Ross and Jay Z, while keeping out the villagers... 
The song is Kanye's response to the hostility he experienced after he invaded the stage at the MTV VMAs to tell Taylor Swift that the award she was holding should've gone to Beyonce's Single Ladies - directed, of course, by Jake Nava. K's certainly acting monstrously here, and its definitely NSFK (not suitable for kids), but the leak of a rough cut of this video months ago, and a disclaimer that its 'art not misogyny' has possibly softened the outrage. 
Also Niki Minaj's brilliant turn as a nutty goth witch, torturing her good witch alter-ego, lightens the tone considerably. She arguably steals it.

ET, the fourth single from Katy Perry's globe-straddling Teenage Dream album, boasts an outer space extravaganza from Floria Sigismondi, in a rare return to promo action.
Boasting an appearance (and recently added vocals) by Kanye West and with all departments upping their game (notably Kabuki's make-up), the promo greatly enhances the pounding soundtrack, combining sci-fi, sex, social comment, sunglasses and human-animal genetic engineering. Nice one, Floria.

And just having her back makes you think about what she might do with Britney, Beyoncé, Leona.... well, perhaps not Leona.
