Ned Botwood directs a big-hearted love letter to the West Country, by way of the American West for Metronomy frontman&nbsp;Joseph Mount's wonderful duet with Katy J Pearson for Love Factory.This song is an absolute peach, and the video highlights the special chemistry that is created by bringing fellow west country artist Pearson on board. Botwood channels the visuals from 1960s US TV variety shows, and the legendary&nbsp;performances by Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and June Carter, blending&nbsp;British and American rural iconography, superimposing Katy and Joseph into sweeping Devon landscapes.Shot with a distinctly American flavour by DP Jamie Harding, the video trades prairie grass for wheat stubble and wide highways for narrow country lanes. The landscapes were captured over a sunset-chasing road trip through the South Hams in Jamie’s van.[imgtoken data:1]Ned, Jamie and editor Kevin Corry worked to recreate a variety of old-school televisual devices. Shooting country vistas to line up with studio performances, then using a combination of back projection, black negative space and lo-fi blending effects to merge them together.Eagle-eyed viewers will also spot a handful of homages to American cult classics, including Paris Texas, My Own Private Idaho and The Night of the Hunter. “What I love about this song is that it just sounds like it’s always been around, like an old standard on the radio," says Botwood.&nbsp;"It made me think of that golden age of country performances on TV in the late ’60s. Those variety hours like Kraft Music Hall and The Porter Wagoner Show.[imgtoken data:2]"Those shows really threw everything at the wall. All those charmingly janky sets and camera effects. Dolly Parton playing her Grammer guitar on a plastic porch, or Loretta Lynn superimposed onto rural Kentucky, or truly weird images like three disembodied Peggy Lee heads trading lyrics in different corners of the screen.“So much country music is about *home*. And if you absorb enough US culture, you can end up with this weird nostalgia for a rural heartland you’ve never actually been to. But it does make sense. When Dolly sings about her ‘Tennessee Mountain Home’, you understand that feeling instinctively, even if you’ve only been as close as the West Country. Katy, Joe and I are all connected to Devon. And sometimes when you’re down there, on the right day and in the right light, it really does look like the American prairie.”“Metronomy and Katy are two of my big indie heroes. So I was very sweaty when the email arrived! But I had the nicest team. Shoutout to Jamie Harding, who took me and his Arriflex sunset-chasing in Devon for two days. Toronto-based director Lucas Hrubizna creates a groundbreaking and bewildering&nbsp;vision of a near-death experience for Sad Night Dynamite, courtesy of cutting-edge 'VolCap' technology, to introduce new release Volume II.Hrubizna has directed an interlinked series of five video shorts that takes the pop-electronic duo's fascination with surreal and psychedelic narrative into amazing new territory. It was made possible by access to the Volumetric Capture facilities at Dimension Studios in London - where SND were filmed performed, and effectively transformed into 3D models.Together with 2D plates of the band performance against greenscreen,&nbsp;Hrubizna could use this material to place them with his created CGI worlds without leaving his home studio. It has taken months of work, but the end-result is mind-boggling, as the approach is to make these worlds as harsh, forbidding, uncomfortable&nbsp;and unpredictable as possible - in accordance with the artists' brief.[imgtoken data:1]<blockquote>Each piece is meant to be a mini-fever dream.</blockquote>“SND had imagined a series of pieces taking place within some sort of purgatory - an abstract in-between place where time has dissolved," explains the director. "Having experienced a near-death event, they had seen the visuals of this project somehow reflecting the dreamlike journey from life to the precipice of death and back."I started to think of the ascending levels of Dantés Purgatorio, and loosely re-imagined them as bleak, liminal spaces from the modern world, wherein reality has exploded into harsh, digital fragments."Each piece is meant to be a mini-fever dream that perfectly loops, reflecting the endless sense of time and space in purgatory while also functioning on social media platforms, where looped video playback is standard.”[imgtoken data:2]

Theo Watkins directs an expressive promo for Model Man featuring Hamzaa.&nbsp;The video follows main character&nbsp;Joshua Ben-Tovim as he trudges through his daily routine. He waters plants, makes toast, and prepares ready meals in a series of mundane&nbsp;vignettes.&nbsp;Spliced between these setups however, are frames of Ben-Tovim performing passionate dance movements, glitching in and out like a technical error. At the midpoint, the character is afforded the chance to perform and live out this dance fantasy, bringing a sense of calm and stillness to his day.[imgtoken data:1]<blockquote>It's weirdly satisfying making someone who’s trained in ballet... to stand still&nbsp;most of the day.</blockquote>"The idea for this video stemmed from melding a character's mundane, everyday routine with mad and expressive dance elements, representing a character's authentic self bubbling up to the surface, through the mire of everyday life," explains Watkins."It was my first ever dance video, so it felt like a good idea to keep the main routine confined to a specific part of the song, with the rest relying on stillness, composition and deadpan humour, with hints of dance bursting through in mere frames at a time."There was something strange and weirdly satisfying about making someone who’s trained in to a high level ballet and contemporary dance stand still for most of the day."Overall we took a lot of inspiration from a 70’s look, seeking to style the video in a slightly anachronistic manner and create a mysterious, dystopian world of beige and browns for our single character to inhabit."

There is variation and repetition of the setups and a consistent returning to a close-up image of a face, as if these his final thoughts as he drifts off to slumber.Watkins thorough exploration of the idea makes for an impressive, enigmatic work for the band's Lover (Don't Let Me Down).

A young man trains for the challenge of his life, in Jack Lilley's oddball promo for MarthaGunn.&nbsp;Following the impeccable visual for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2021/07/12/marthagunn-holding-fire-jack-lilley/71843">Holding The Fire</a>&nbsp;last month, Lilley switches up his approach, this time creating a narrative video with no performance elements - and it works brilliantly.&nbsp;Starring&nbsp;James Copplestone Farmer as the Scrabble-obsessed protagonist, the concept focuses on the training up to a series of competitions against other pro players - each played by a member of the band in hilarious disguises. The debt to Netflix smash series The Queen's Gambit is clear, but that only makes it more enjoyable.&nbsp;It's another knockout video from Lilley and team, and deserves a rewatch or two.[imgtoken data:1]

Rob Brown presents a celebration of the London barber&nbsp;in the video for Status Quo's Liberty Lane.&nbsp;We follow two barbers in a shop as they interact and work on a diverse selection of guests, from young girls&nbsp;to old men with whispy eyebrows and moustaches. Barbershops have always catered to a variety of clientele, and it's heartwarming to see the micro communities that assemble whilst waiting to get a hair cut&nbsp;represented on screen.&nbsp;&nbsp;Status Quo as a group are cleverly woven into the project, through short flashes of live performance on the shop's TV screen&nbsp;and photographs on the front cover of magazines. The group might not be front and centre in the video, but their presence is felt in every shot.&nbsp;Shot on&nbsp;Kodak S16mm stock, the cinematography is nostalgic and represents the ideas&nbsp;of community and Status Quo's domination of British music, as well as honouring the iconic craft that we have come to expect from London's barbering community.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lovelorn Patrick Martin is having&nbsp;a very tough day&nbsp;in Theo Watkins's video for Both Of You.&nbsp;Shot in the South-West of England, Patrick Martin plays a man in a dog mascot suit, handing out heart-shaped pepperoni pizza bites by the beach. It isn't long until things go wrong, when a passer-by knocks into him, and a destructive tween runs over his product with a scooter. This sets off a chain of events, each one a little worse than before...Martin gives a winning&nbsp;performance as the broken-hearted all-American protagonist stuck in the back end of beyond in little Middle England, clinging onto hope - even though he's doomed.&nbsp;The 16mm film stock lends a happy-go-lucky nostalgic vibe to the project, and the zealous use of zooming helps cement the old-school feel.&nbsp;

Cult pop-punk band Neck Deep retreat to their native South Wales (Rockfield Studios)&nbsp;for this old-school performance video, directed by Our World is Grey.It has become incredibly fashionable to mine ’90s rock performance videos as a reference. The improvisational approach of videos for Breeders, Pixies and early Weezer, as well as the cheap 16mm aesthetic of grunge, has become oddly aspirational. So it’s great to see a video that looks authentically like the post-rock videos it is channeling. And appropriate for a young, regional band carrying the DIY spirit of that era.DOPs Jamie Harding and Daniel Broadley&nbsp;deserve&nbsp;a special mention. Their period look, shot on 16mm and Super-8mm, gives the video a homegrown, lived-in quality.&nbsp;
