CARIBOU - Can't Do Without You

Greg Jardin was the mastermind&nbsp;behind the&nbsp;awe-inspiring stop-motion animated videos for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2011/11/07/kina-grannis-your-arms-greg-jardin" target="_blank">Kira Grannis&#39;s In Your Arms</a>, and Joey Ramone&#39;s <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2012/10/26/joey-ramone-new-york-city-greg-jardin" target="_blank">New York City</a>.&nbsp;But his&nbsp;latest for&nbsp;MAX&#39;s Gibberish &nbsp;- and part of the impressive line-up of videos premeiered at the YouTube Music Awards earlier this week &ndash; demonstrates another side of his ingenuity.&nbsp;This&nbsp;hip-hop dance&nbsp;promo, filmed in a loft space, certainly looks like a one-shot video, and appears to be running backwards - apart from when its going forwards.&nbsp;In fact, it was achieved through&nbsp;minutely-detailed&nbsp;choreography by Laura Edwards, and precise&nbsp;motion-control rigging. Two sequences - one reversed and other with normal playback- have been merged into one captivating sequence. And&nbsp;put this in a special class of pop video.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The band perform the song in a house in the teeth of a ferocious dust storm - so bad they momentarily become dust themselves - until the sheer power of This Ladder Is Ours drives the storm away. It's a cinematic departure from Greg's in-camera VFX videos - but this was largely shot in-camera too. 
The video was shot in a house in Agua Dulce, CA (an hour's drive north of LA) the band performing amid 'movie dirt' blown by giant fans. The effect as an accompaniment to a big performance, is tremendous, although the band are probably still cleaning the dust out of their ears... So you are making a video for the new Daft Punk soundtrack to Tron Legacy, knowing that there are about a thousand videos already made that were 'inspired by' the original movie. What do you do Answer: make it even more unimpeachably, definitively Tron-like. 
The video for Daft Punk's Derezzed by Warren Fu is a near-perfect appetizer for the main course that arrives this weekend (December 17). Only the first two shots are from the actual movie, but you'd never know. Its brilliantly made (with post work done at The Mill) and of course, the familiar Daft Punk iconography is a seamless fit.
