It’s 2020 and the Earth is about to self-destruct...&nbsp;That's not the news, it's Katy Perry's new video, directed by Similar But Different and&nbsp;starring Zooey Deschanel. It's&nbsp;a tongue in cheek take on the whole Katy and Zooey&nbsp;döppelgänger internet phenomenon.The video is set a retro-futuristic sci-fi future.&nbsp; Other intergalactic species know the end for humankind is near, including a bunch of Katy-obsessed aliens, who want&nbsp;to save (abduct) Katy before Earth’s demise and bring her to the mothership to perform for them for eternity.&nbsp;Unfortunately, the alien duo in charge of the mission made a common terrestrial mistake: rather than beam up Katy, out with her new baby, they grab Zooey Deschanel instead.Smash cut to mission control on the mothership, a confused Zooey comes-to and realizes she’s been mistaken (again) for Katy as her abductors also realize they’ve made a mistake. Terrified that they’ve captured the wrong person, and fearful of repercussions, Zooey makes a deal with her abductors to play the role of Katy in exchange for them letting her save the Earth.&nbsp; Luckily, Earth’s fate is saved as Zooey quickly starts to embrace the role of intergalactic popstar.If only the Brexit negotiations had gone so smoothly (and quickly). But of course, that gig was handled by men.[imgtoken data:1]The video has fun with classic Katy Perry music video tropes and retains the kooky but knowing tone of so many of her videos. And&nbsp;it’s an expert exercise in set design, costume design and performance in creating this storyworld.&nbsp;“We are such fans of Katy’s wit — her out-of-this-world imagination and creative brain," say&nbsp;Similar But Different's Dani Girdwood and Charlotte Fassler.&nbsp;"We’ve also always been obsessed with aliens and retro-futurism, and after hearing the song for the first time our minds exploded with where we could take it. Not sure there’s ever been a project more meant for us than this one.”

Katy Perry - Not the End of the World

Amy Allen is stalked by an unknown aggressor in Similar But Different's video for Difficult.&nbsp;Channelling a paranormal, retro-horror aesthetic, the directing duo - Charlotte Fassler and Dani Girdwood - set the scene using an isolated desert location, mysterious in its own right with an overbearing sense of mystery.&nbsp;We follow Amy as she is watched by a shadowy figure and chased by a reckless driver, only to discover she’s trapped in a repeating loop of her own making. The video’s visuals echo the song’s lyrics and Amy’s battle with herself.The mysterious and dynamic video is complimented by its clever use of surveillance footage and nature documentary clips adding an additional layer to the visual metaphor. The duo used production restraints to their advantage, creating a rawness felt onscreen through Amy’s dramatic, dynamic and energetic performance.&nbsp;

Amy Allen 'Difficult' by Similar But Different

Frozen moments capture an instance of unknown trauma in Isaac Ravishankara's super video for Active Child.“At its core All Eyes On You, is a devotional piece for companionship," says Active Child about the song. "A testament to one's sacrifice in the pursuit of love, even if becomes unhealthy. There’s a beauty in the submission of self to someone else in hopes of creating a pure partnership in life.”The camerawork is the star of the show in Ravishankara's take on the song, with&nbsp;long, fluid takes that feel&nbsp;like an out of body experience. The camera explores&nbsp;the space around our characters, as they are stuck in freeze-frame in different situations. The visual effects work here is seamless, and the slow unravelling of the narrative fits perfectly with the stylistic cinematography choices.Performers&nbsp;Reshma Gajjar and Larkin Poynton are both very strong, and you will struggle to take your eyes off of them as you start to hypothesise about what could be going on. It's a question that you might still be left with at the end, but this project is ripe for repeat viewings, so you have more than enough opportunity to think of your own theories.&nbsp;
