Lisette Donkersloot's second video for NAO - following the splendid <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2021/08/05/nao-messy-love-lisette-donkersloot/72248" target="_blank">Messy Love</a> - the songstress occupies another near-abstract space that reflects the sentiments of the song.For Wait, a song which is an intimate look at how mistakes grow in a relationship, we see NAO against a blacked-out background on a small floral island. Then&nbsp;her body and others become islands themselves in this space, creating landscapes as they appear in varying sizes&nbsp;and proportions.[imgtoken data:1]“For this video I wanted to&nbsp;create a landscape out of body parts," confirms Donkersloot. "Over the course of the beautifully-sung ballad the camera travels through a water surface, past several tableau of NAO&nbsp;in different scales/proportions mimicking elements of a landscape, where she will star as the mountains, the rocks, landshore and also a human on land surrounded by water.”&nbsp;After a while, the sky turns into a beautifully gradient colour and NAO emerges as all landscapes at once, creating a gorgeous surrealistic dreamscape. Another wonderful example of the director creating a graphic sensibility that is perfectly attuned to the artist and her performance. &nbsp;

Lisette Donkersloot creates a gorgeously graphic combination of artist and dance performance for the triumphant return of Nao.Inspired by Infrared photography, and working with choreographer Shay Latukolan, the Dutch director builds a radiant spectrum of colour and movement around the East London songstress's compelling performance of Messy Love - an ode to self-love, self-respect and choosing peace over the never-ending struggles of a detrimental relationship.[imgtoken data:1]Donkersloot creates a little bit of magic with the combination of her&nbsp;studio staging - a series of ever-changing backdrops of sunsets in a range of colours - and the astounding dancers in their&nbsp;fantastic 'alien' mode: covered in indigo blue bodypaint and orange-coloured gravity-defying braid hair styles.&nbsp;&nbsp;The dancers perform an abstract choreography throughout the video to augment Nao's central position. They start out on the floor, then work their way up, portraying a metaphor of plants growing as they receive sunlight and water. In the end, they return to their original horizontal positions, holding on to their goddess NAO who is ready for a new circle of life.Ultimately the video reflects the theme of the song and Nao's empowering lyrics in Messy Love, about a&nbsp;relationship that’s on the rocks: "I won’t break, said I won’t change my ways not even this time”. New pop hope Griff turns in a splendid live performance of Black Hole in Thomas Ralph's film shot at the newly restored Hackney Church. In the process it&nbsp;shifts from infinite darkness to space and light, and then back and forth between day and night.Griff is initially seen against total blackness - actually a&nbsp;black infinity wall that&nbsp;is revealed as such when the camera moves outwards to reveal the location and the teenage singer's fellow musicians. Then the church is revealed and a sense of space and light streaming from a giant stained glass window is a real mood-lifter.Most importantly of all, Griff reveals herself as a genuinely exciting talent with a great version of this excellent song.[imgtoken data:1]

Ben Howard returns with the first release from his fourth album and a satirical take on the mores of the English landed classes in a widescreen comedy&nbsp;with bite directed by Cloé Bailly.For What A Day Bailly plants the viewer firmly in the English countryside, with a hunting party of shotgun-toting gentry. These increasingly drunken upper class twits are prospective Elmer Fudds, on the hunt for rabbits - which are being protected elsewhere in the field by Ben Howard himself.The fun really starts when one of the party begins to turn into one of the very creatures that he and his pals intend to fill with buckshot. Mysteriously sprouting a bunny tail, prominent teeth and floppy ears becomes increasingly difficult to hide from his boozed-up pals - leading to a shootout worthy of a&nbsp;decent Spaghetti Western.<blockquote>Ben wanted to create a social satire about the vacuity of British nobility hunting parties.</blockquote>“When Ben told me he wanted a dark comedy music vid for What A Day, I was just psyched," says Cloé Bailly.&nbsp;"It's my favourite genre to explore. He wanted to create a social satire about the vacuity of British nobility hunting parties. In his own words, it&nbsp;was a nonsense idea loosely based upon the Old English rhyme, ‘back to back they faced each other, drew their swords and shot each other’.[imgtoken data:1]"People loving to hunt just for the sake of killing, not out of necessity, might as well end up shooting each other and loving it too... Maxim Kelly teams up with South London alt-rockers Shame to create a masterful reimagining of archive footage for new single Nigel Hitter.Applying deepfake technology onto film from mid-20th century child developmental research, Kelly drops the band -&nbsp;frontman Charlie Steen,&nbsp;in particular&nbsp;- into the world of vintage equipment, whitecoated medics&nbsp;and&nbsp;lots of babies, undergoing all manner of tests and examinations. It's all part of the project led by that man who introduces the film and has his name on the front of the hospital... Nigel Hitter, MD.The effect of this clever refashioning of the past is both funny and creepy - which becomes more pronounced when the babies 'learn' to sing the lyrics of the song, and the human babies' number is increased by a painfully thin baby rhesus monkey. Now we are sliding into David Cronenberg territory of&nbsp;curious institutions, strange experiments and unfeasibly gifted toddlers.You could also argue that the video is also a kind of reflection on the past year - a relentless testing of human behaviour, where the medical profession play a prominent role. It echoes the manner in which the song, which features on the band's new album Drunk Tank Pink (out on Friday, 15th January). As Steen explains, it started life as&nbsp;the band adjusted to being locked down at home, having spent much of their adult life on tour.&nbsp;“Nigel Hitter is one of the vital organs of Drunk Tank Pink," he says. "A necessary pulse. Focused on daily routine, repetition, and how extraordinary any ordinary task seemed to me after coming home from touring. A world of percussion and joy lies within.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And Maxim Kelly was clearly inspired by the lyrics in coming up with the concept behind the video. The way he has executed that idea into the finished work - with the help of his team, including DoP Franklin Dow, editor Charlie Reddie and VFX artist RoBert Chandler - is nothing short of a marvel.

Maxim Kelly employs 19th century tech to create a mesmerising, appropriately-shaped video for Django Django's Spirals, the band's first new material since 2018.By recreating the Phénakisticope, a pre-cinematic invention to create 'motion pictures', Kelly has created&nbsp;a series of mandala-like circular patterns, encompassing images of Django lead singer David Maclean, that animate as they spin around. As they do so, they also replicate the spiralling effect that's referenced in the lyrics and also the music.This smart visual idea takes the viewer on a psychedelic experience that also sits perfectly with the band's canon&nbsp;of inventive visuals for their music.The single will be available to stream and download on all the usual digital platforms and also as a 10” vinyl b/w exclusive track The Ark, available from www.djangodjango.co.uk and all independent record shops.
