London singer/producer Miink's exploration of Christianity's role in human suffering gets a richly atmospheric treatment in Elliott Power's stunning visual for Paper Doll.The song comes from Miink's forthcoming second album Notice Me, an ambitious and commendable work that addresses the impact on uprooted culutres of the Atlantic slave trade. In Paper Doll he throws a spotlight upon how colonizers used Christianity, and the concept of heaven and hell, as a tool to prevent slaves from committing suicide on the long journey to America.[imgtoken data:1]Power's striking video alludes to the themes in the song, setting Miink's performances against elements of Christian iconography.As many enslaved people were forced to practice their true beliefs in secret, and the video for&nbsp;Paper Doll reflects this forced secrecy through a world shown entirely in darkness, in beautifully composed scenes illuminated by points of light.With cinematography by Pau Muñoz and Josep Pardo, Power sets Miink against the forces of religion, on the brink of the underworld, and creates a richly evocative piece of work.

Elliott Power has released some visually striking, monochromatic visuals&nbsp;for new single Once Smitten directed by&nbsp;Alex Hulsey.&nbsp;The video zeroes in on Hulsey&#39;s experimentation with&nbsp;ferrofluids, resulting in&nbsp;transfixing sequences of the shiny&nbsp;fluid playing off of the&nbsp;human body. The black, tarlike liquid&nbsp;takes a life of its own, forming into complex scales that slither their way across the otherwise slick smooth human forms.Hulsey also achieved his goal of&nbsp;creating something&nbsp;&ldquo;abstract with dark visuals to match the [song&#39;s] production&rdquo;&nbsp;without the use of CGI.&nbsp;It&#39;s all done through in-camera effects, courtesy of excellent work&nbsp;by DoP David Procter.&nbsp;&nbsp;

You can never be sure how likely or often a great music video director is to return once they&rsquo;ve begun flexing their cinematic muscles in longer formats. Jonze makes the occasional appearance. Gondry rocks back up once in a while with something as witty as always. Wolfe?Goddamn.With his first video in two years, this time for Paolo Nutini&rsquo;s Iron Sky, and just after finishing his already-acclaimed debut feature Catch Me Daddy, Wolfe doesn&rsquo;t just return to music videos, he punches straight to the gut.&nbsp;Like what.Nutini&rsquo;s voice howls above eight minutes of unnerving, haunting images. Each shot filled with its own form of agony. A distant dystopia that feels uncomfortably familiar. Pervasive desperation. Visceral brutality. Looking for salvation through religion and chemicals in equal measure.Wolfe manages to create a video that is as distressing as it is beautiful. Insightful. Alarming. While others take what they&rsquo;ve learned in music videos to features, he&rsquo;s brought it all back; an earnest cinematic poetry that&rsquo;s increasingly rare in our industry.Six minutes in, the crawling tilt down a 20th century fresco while an extract of Chaplin&#39;s&nbsp;The Great Dictator&nbsp;is heard betrays the level at which Wolfe is now creating; a shot that will no doubt be referenced on the silver screen, let alone other videos.Like any great work of film, there&rsquo;s so much to unpack. And at its core, a truth about us we&rsquo;d rather not acknowledge.Goddamn. Tremendous work.

George Belfield&#39;s video for Richard Hawley&#39;s majestic Don&#39;t Stare At The Sun has a compelling, almost wilfully simple concept. These are scenes from ordinary life, each lingering shot takes in the back of someone&#39;s head. These are people in contemplation, whereever they are. And they do offer a reflective mood that gels with Hawley&#39;s trademark melodious delivery. But it also becomes increasingly intense...The young director, who directed the impressive video for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2011/11/21/dva-ft-vikter-duplaix-madness-by-george-belfield/" target="_blank">DVA&#39;s Madness</a> just over a year ago, shot this over three days in and around Hawley&#39;s hometown of Sheffield, working with local street-cast people, and shooting on 35mm film. The Times (well, their pop person) is already calling it International Chase &amp; Status Day on Twitter. It's the day that the video for Blind Faith appeared, sent the Twitterati abuzz, and triggered a wave of blissful nostalgia for the halcyon days of yesteryear. The people are really feeling it - and no wonder.Its all because of this 'home video' of a bunch of Manchester lads and their big night out - in 1990. It starts with their preparations, and climaxes at an illegal rave in a warehouse somewhere in the north of England - and the aftermath. At ten minutes, its much more than a video. But in there is C&amp;S's Blind Faith (featuring Liam Bailey) - just about the biggest clue that this isn't truly authentic, but actually a stunning recreation of a very evocative moment of British music and social history.This was done right after the latest B video, <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2010/11/18/15733/" target="_blank">Love Goes Down</a>. "Daniel spent five days in Manchester street-casting himself, going to night spots where he'd find the right people," explains Tim Francis. "Everyone there at the rave was invited." In fact, the production put on their own rave at a Manchester warehouse that was quite an event in itself, featuring legendary DJs who made their names at the time - including Slip Mat, Crowhead and Matt Ward - as well as Chase &amp; Status. "It was like a proper revival night," says Tim. "And the response we got was that it was the best party that Manchester had seen in a while." But its really the performances of the leading cast members, the focus on their camaraderie, and shared experience, which are key. Two of the lads in this also featured in Daniel's short film 93 Til Infinity. "They were just perfect for this," says Tim Francis. "Daniel's not about staging set-ups, his approach is to create an event and film it. The magic is to get the right guys in the right environment, and let things happen. It's been a big part of his work from The Horrors onwards."To say Daniel Wolfe is on a roll is a bit of an understatement - The Times' Caitlin Moran has called him a "fucking genius". Part four of what has become an epic, and quite possibly unprecedented series of music videos for Plan B by Daniel Wolfe. 
After Stay Too Long, She Says and Prayin', expectations for The Recluse could hardly be higher. But it delivers - and then turns it up another notch. 
This one is actually for a song that comes before Prayin' in the concept/story album that is The Defamation of Strickland Banks, but Dan and Ben Drew/Plan B have seized the opportunity to fill in the gaps with a dual narrative structure - after he enters jail for the crime he didn't commit, and flashbacks to the period when still free. 
It's great work, and Drew arguably gives his best acting performance yet. And taken with the rest... what an achievement - by everyone who's been involved in making them.

Plan B’s The Recluse by Daniel Wolfe

After <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/12/14/plan-b's-stay-too-long-by-daniel-wolfe/" target="_blank">Stay Too Long</a> and <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2010/02/19/plan-b's-she-said-by-daniel-wolfe/" target="_blank">She Said</a> the third part of Plan B/Ben Drew and Daniel Wolfe&#39;s Strickland Banks trilogy brings it all together - and is arguably the most impressive of the lot.Following on from the courtroom drama-musical of She Said, Prayin&#39; finds the South London rapper slung in jail. It&#39;s brutal and frightening, grittily real - but also shifts, quite brilliantly, to moments of fantasy.Ben Drew does, of course, have acting chops, having worked with Michael Caine on Harry Brown, and he gives another sterling performance here. But what an achievement by Daniel Wolfe. This stands alone as a great video, but it&#39;s also the finale to a genuinely coherent music video trilogy. That was always hard to do, even in the &#39;good old days&#39;. Daniel Wolfe takes the literal approach to The Energies&#39; Long Distance Runner. It&#39;s pared down, character-driven and, as usual with Dan&#39;s work, very cinematic.There are actually two versions of this - for the actual track and for the Lifelike Remix, where things get even more psychological and exhausting.Dan actually found Frankie, his young running man, while shooting his previous video the week before. He&#39;s a resident in the street where Take That&#39;s <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2009/02/02/take-that%e2%80%99s-up-all-night-by-daniel-wolfe/">Up All Night</a> was shot, and features in the big street-party knees-up.

The Energies’ Long Distance Runner by Daniel Wolfe

The music video campaign since Take That's comeback has been superb - strongly instrumental in elevating them once again into a nation's affections.
But this is still quite a surprise: a Take That video so grittily realistic one can almost sense the guiding hand of a Ken Loach or Shane Meadows. Actually Dan Wolfe, quite possibly inspired by the song's hefty nod to Oasis, has conjured this timeless English scene of honest fun - the street party - and come up with an image of the band that's even cooler - as a four-man Chas &amp; Dave. Masterstroke.
It was shot in Croydon, and it was cold (but, you'll notice, not snowing) and like the rest of Dan's work, it's a proper slice of music vid cinema. Just like in the good ol' days...
