George Belfield's video for Richard Hawley's majestic Don't Stare At The Sun has a compelling, almost wilfully simple concept. These are scenes from ordinary life, each lingering shot takes in the back of someone's head. These are people in contemplation, whereever they are. And they do offer a reflective mood that gels with Hawley's trademark melodious delivery. But it also becomes increasingly intense...
The young director, who directed the impressive video for DVA's Madness just over a year ago, shot this over three days in and around Hawley's hometown of Sheffield, working with local street-cast people, and shooting on 35mm film. Incidentally, it was commissioned in Richard's local during an unrelated meeting between director Daniel Wolfe (who co-exec produced this), producer Lee Groombridge and commissioner John Moule...
