Directing duo Machine Operated deliver an intimate documentary-style music video for Loyle Carner's Georgetown - shot in the eponymous capital of Guyana.The pair travelled with Loyle to the country of his father, documenting his&nbsp;relationship with identity, community and belonging, with cinematographers&nbsp;Dan Landin - making a rare return to music videos -&nbsp;and Ola Pontakos.It starts with the words of Guyanese playwright/poet&nbsp;John Agard reciting his poem 'Half-Caste', and from that intriguing point, the film interweaves striking portraiture with understated performance vignettes, captured in a breathtakingly cinematic way, with gorgeous composition, colour palettes and textures.&nbsp;It's&nbsp;stunning work.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;

Sophie Muller's first video since signing to Prettybird sees her making her third video for the now singularly-named Cheryl. And as well as the name reduction, it's also a Cheryl as we've never seen her before.That's making the&nbsp;video a magnet for debate about whether or not Cheryl has had facial surgery, and a bigger one about the pressure on our pop stars to stay young-looking. But in fact, the video is something of a triumph on its own terms. After you watch it once, you can focus on the more important stuff, and appreciate the fact that Sophie Muller has done it again.This is a very slick pop product that ticks the boxes. It sees Muller reunited with one of the old school great DoPs, Dan Landin, and the use of art direction, lighting and choreography is top notch, with something of a 90s flavour, updated for 2018. But at the heart, Cheryl herself gives a performance of comeback single Love Made Me Do It that that adds&nbsp;personality, warmth and humour to the&nbsp;singing-and-dancing stuff. It&nbsp;seems to be saying: 'this is just all a bit of fun, isn't it?'.&nbsp;&nbsp;Good for you, Cheryl.&nbsp;

Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones&#39;s latest collaboration with Björk is a stunning vision, combining live action and post VFX, for the title track from her new album utopia.Part of a holistic creative project that includes the striking album cover (shot by Jesse Kanda) and the previous videos for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/09/19/bj%C3%B6rk-gate-andrew-thomas-huang" target="_blank">The Gate</a> and Blissing Me, Warren and Nick have created an extraordinarily beautiful interpretation of Björk&#39;s concept of Utopia. She awakes in a landscape where nature and fantasy merge, amid her family of female flautists, as a sort of human flower, ready for pollination.Bjork&nbsp;is very much in the guise of the persona on Kanda&#39;s album cover, with the facial adornments created by longtime collaborator James Merry. But the real satisfaction is how Du Preez and Thornton Jones have dovetailed the&nbsp;live action performances, the art direction and the post production so completely. It&#39;s certainly one of the greatest Björk videos of recent years.&nbsp;

It&#39;s a raucous, rowdy black and white performance video from Kasabian that takes place in a dilapidated squat that&#39;s soon to become luxury apartments. A not-so-subtle, but certainly welcome, swipe at the former Mayor of London and the ruthless gentrifying efforts of developers in the city.

Paul Gore&#39;s second video for Paloma Faith - in a three-part series for Paloma&#39;s album A Perfect Contradiction - is more focussed than his previous multi-narrative effort for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2014/01/17/paloma-faith-cant-rely-you-paul-gore" target="_blank">Can&#39;t Rely On You</a>, and more powerful. In fact,&nbsp;this is a tremendous&nbsp;pop promo.&nbsp;Shot by Dan Landin, a DoP who began his career shooting some of the best music videos in the 1990s, Only Love Can Hurt Like This looks stunning from the start. The performance and dramatic set-ups are beautifully composed - but then it just gets better.When Paloma plunges into the pool, prepare for no ordinary underwater sequence. Her passionate performance continues unabated. The effect is gobsmacking, and the video enters its epic phase. It feels even more&nbsp;like a pop promo production of the old school - helmed superbly by Paul Gore, a director with the talent and experience to make it happen.&nbsp;When you see videos like this, you realise what we&#39;ve been missing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

They shoot ravers, don&#39;t they?That was the line that Mark Waites&nbsp;pitched&nbsp;to make&nbsp;the video for&nbsp;Fatboy Slim&#39;s Eat Sleep Rave Repeat - and landed him the job, even though he&#39;s more usually occupied running the ad agency Mother.&nbsp;&quot;Mark is a pure ideas person, and Norman [Cook aka Fatboy Slim] loves ideas,&quot; says John Hassay, in his guise as video commissioner for Fatboy Slim. And the idea was nailed-on&nbsp;to the message of the song: the&nbsp;updating of a very old phenomenon, the dance marathon.They used to take place&nbsp;at the height of the Great Depression in the 1930s (and became the subject of the 60s movie&nbsp;They Shoot Horses, Don&#39;t They?). The original versions went on for weeks,&nbsp;this one was rather shorter - but it was done for real. The video is a record of what really happened at the day of the Endurance Dance Event, in East London, October 2013. &nbsp;&nbsp;The job became a co-production between Mother and Hassay&#39;s production company Good Egg, and he says it was a nail-biting experience setting up a real event at short order where a real contest could take place. But he managed to recruit another&nbsp;Fatboy Slim video veteran to the team - Vincent Landay, Spike Jonze&#39;s&nbsp;producer. They pulled it around, inviting young clubbers&nbsp;with the chance of winning a &pound;500 prize if they could stay dancing the longest.The first part of the video chronicles the dancers signing up, and talking bullishly about their intentions, followed by some early-stage high energy dancing by the crowd of competitors, moving to the sound of Brighton&#39;s Traction Sound. But then judges start calling dancers out, the casualties mount, the silver ponchos are dispensed...&nbsp;&quot;There were no breaks - we didn&#39;t let people stop at all. It came down to attrition,&quot; says John Hassay, &quot;But a lot of people who dropped out just wanted to stay to see what happened.&quot; He&nbsp;adds there was at least one serious medical case that came out of the event, caused by a probably combination of chemical intake and exhaustion.&nbsp;In fact, just to test out the fitter competitors,&nbsp;after about ten hours, a veteran&nbsp;gym instructor turned up to give them even more of a workout (hence the shots in the video&nbsp;of dancers doing press-ups).&nbsp;&nbsp;Interestingly, of the four remaining competitors,&nbsp;three were female. But after a jaw-dropping 18 hours, winning dancer was the last boy, presented with his prize by Norman himself. &quot;Quite honestly I think he could&#39;ve kept going for several more hours,&quot;&nbsp;says Hassay.Punishing, brutal... and classic Fatboy Slim.

Image-makers Warren du Preez and Nick Thornton-Jones have collaborated with UNKLE's James Lavelle on ads for BMW, Johnnie Walker and Cartier - they all featured in BUG's retrospective of UNKLE's music visual history at the BFI Southbank on May 7th. 
Now Warren&amp;Nick have created a cross-media campaign for the new UNKLE album Where Did The Night Fall (out this week) which includes a series of images for the special print book accompanying the album release - and the sensual, sexy video for Follow Me Down.
Warren&amp;Nick interpret the music 's brooding cinematic atmosphere with smoke, water and the lovely forms of Liberty Ross and friends. 
"The thing with James and ourselves is that we're firm believers in collaboration and out of that comes really interesting things. There's not a lot of freedom in today's creative world so when you're given the space to express yourself it's really an open invitation to create magic," says Warren. 
"The story, if you want to call it that, is a combination of the otherworldly, spiritual and metaphysical combined with something provocative, strange and beautiful. There's a strength and resilience to Liberty's serpentine character that's underscored with an essence of vulnerability and fragility, so in the end there are various interwoven layers complimenting and colliding with one another to create both harmony and discordance."
"Over the course of collaborating with certain artists you develop creative relationships that just work - whether that's due to a similarity of outlook or a certain tacit understanding about how to approach different projects," says James Lavelle. "Warren&amp;Nick had a really interesting perspective on the music off the album and a great vision for how to build an entire world around that so the partnership with them was ultimately about trusting and respecting that."

UNKLE’s Follow Me Down by Warren du Preez & Nick Thornton Jones

A trailer for the new BBC Radio 4 series A History of the World in 100 Objects appeared on BBC1 last Sunday straight after the exquisitely-shot Wallander - and was even more cinematic and mesmerizing than the show that preceded it. 
What's going on It's WIZ. He made this stunning film, Horse, narrated by actor Michael Fassbender. He's directed two in fact. The other is the arguably even more amazing Bull, narrated by Yasmina Dickens. Together they may well be the best programme trailers ever made.
When WIZ was asked in Shots last year why he has never made commercials before he laid out a challenge for agency creative teams give him something that would inspire him to make something special. Sam Walker and Joe De Souza at Fallon UK have clearly risen to that challenge. 
Both films were shot in Spain, outside Madrid, and WIZ also worked with some regular collaborators, including DoP Dan Landin and editor Tom Lindsay. Looks like his commercials career is off and running at last.
