Chris Fowles explores the possibilities in his enigmatic promo for up-and-coming artist&nbsp;D4vd.The video for Worthless starts with D4vd on the couch - he's patient talking to a initially unseen psychiatrist. Furthermore, he is also taking part in a group therapy session.These spin off into dark, twisted vignettes - a trippy house party and taxi journey - presumably flashbacks to what led him to into therapy. But then things get weirder. What actually is real in D4vd's mysterious world?"We had a really tight turnaround on this video," says producer Alex White. "Chris had to develop a concept that not only aligned with d4vd's brief but that was also achievable to produce and shoot in the time given."Collaborating once again with DoP Henry Gill, meant that Chris and Henry could think freely on the shoot with d4vd,&nbsp;and the whole team made&nbsp;it a really enjoyable and creative day."[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;

Chris Fowles directs an innovative and intriguing promo for singer-songwriter Henry Moodie, combining normal screen shape and vertical video in one clever concept.&nbsp;For Drunk Text, Fowles has Moodie sitting in the front seat on the upper deck of a bus during two different journeys -&nbsp;a day in April, and a night in November - captured from the same camera position. Meanwhile, behind him, a series of interconnected stories unfold among a number passengers who are also on both journeys.The regular 16:9 screen is also divided into three sections, which enables Fowles to use split-screen to cut between journeys, and emphasise the small dramas and interactions between the characters. And Moodie always remains in the central section of the 'triptych', performing the heartfelt Drunk Text."The concept was designed specifically for new video mediums like TikTok," Fowles confirms. "We wanted to experiment with using the format itself to tell the story."So when viewed vertically, you’ll only see the main performance. But when viewed with the widescreen you reveal all the stories and context."In&nbsp;doing so, Fowles has been entirely successful.&nbsp; There is a real complexity to the soap opera unfolding behing Moodie that makes it worth watching again. But in the&nbsp;dovetailing of both narrative and&nbsp;conceptual ideas it also makes a real contribution&nbsp;in addressing the issue of competing video formats.

Chris Fowles directs a poignant promo for Cavetown's Fall In Love With A Girl, featuring&nbsp;Beabadoobee.The video sees the artist - real name Robin Skinner - create a series of narrative setups in a dollhouse, using small figurines and a selection of to-scale props. One of those small figurines follows the song's lead - they are placed in a conventional&nbsp;heterosexual relationship; but each time Cavetown's character returns to the doll's house, they have mysteriously turned away from this stereotypical set-up.&nbsp;Then a turning point changes the course of the narrative - triggered by the arrival of Bea, when Robin is absent. The figurine can then embrace the&nbsp;same-sex relationship they dream&nbsp;of.[imgtoken data:1]Fowles shows impressive storytelling craft in making this all work. He approaches it in an&nbsp;an accessible, artistic way,&nbsp;and DoP Terrence Wilkins' superb cinematography - both in and out of the dollhouse - elevates the entire project. The performances of the artists also strike&nbsp;the right note.&nbsp;&nbsp;"I was so excited when this brief came in,"&nbsp;says Fowles. "The track was such an earworm and an incredible chance to work with artists like Robin and Bea, who I’ve been a fan of for a while."The video is a playful lesson in not being able to control who you fall in love with. Chris Fowles directs a powerful one-shot video for up-and-coming London-based artist Gigi Moss.Set on an underground train, the film uses in-camera tricks to transition between a fully packed train and a totally stark and isolating space, representing the lilting highs and lows of the music.&nbsp;It’s an interesting spin on the themes of the track, which explores a bittersweet story of being trapped somewhere you’re uncomfortable, and how easy it can be&nbsp;to return to a toxic situation.&nbsp;DoP&nbsp;Marti Guiver balances a sense of realism and gloomy fantasy in the cinematography, with coloured lights and a tinted green aesthetic, representing the unease and conflict the artist is feeling.“The song struck a real chord with me when I first heard it," says Chris Fowles. "Gigi was quite keen for the narrative of the video to be contemporary and a new spin on her feelings behind the track. Her management gave us total creative freedom which was amazing. We didn’t have much time or budget, but I think we managed to pull it off."&nbsp;
