Andrew Thomas Huang directs a brilliantly arresting promo for Björk's Ancestress, exploring&nbsp;the idea of death and the rituals we partake in at the end of our loved one's lives, and pays homage to&nbsp;Björk's mother, who passed away in 2018.In stark contrast to the hypnotic, fungi-inspired video for her previous release, this concept is a visualisation of catharsis, a goodbye that only Björk - and her creative collaborators - could create, something&nbsp;raw yet breatktakingly abstract and artistic.She leads a funeral procession of mourners through amazing Icelandic landscapes, her face shrouded by a veil, establishing a tone and atmosphere which is virtually operatic.&nbsp;For Huang, who has memorably collaborated with&nbsp;Björk on several videos, including Mutual Core and The Gate, this sees him forego use of VFX for an entirely cinematic approach, but with its use of colour, costume, choreography and sheer scale this is still so characteristically his work.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Upon release, Björk put out an Instagram post about her struggle with attending funerals, and how her idea of rituals have always been different to tradition.&nbsp;"When the soul sets off, it needs to be outside so there is room for how enormous it becomes when it merges with the elements," she says.This video represents&nbsp;an idealistic send-off from her own perspective, and is heart-wrenchingly beautiful in every way. Director Andrew Thomas Huang has&nbsp;taken to social media to bring attention what he feels is the copying of&nbsp;segments of his award-winning video for FKA Twigs's Cellophane&nbsp;in the just-released video for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6swmTBVI83k" target="_blank">Lil Nas X's Montero (Call Me By Your Name)</a>.His reaction follows the release of the big budget VFX-heavy Lil Nas X video, directed by&nbsp;Tanu Muino, on March 26th.&nbsp;Following the release, Huang posted&nbsp;a side-by-side of both videos on TikTok,&nbsp;drawing attention to the similarity between the sequences in both videos, captioning it with “@lilnasx&nbsp;take me off your mood board or hire me.”The Montero video includes a section of the video where&nbsp;Lil Nas X is in a painterly sky scene featuring a winged human figure, then descends down a pole, while executing poledance moves to the ground where he encounters a Satanic figure. In <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkLjqFpBh84" target="_blank">Huang's video for Cellophane</a>, Twigs poledances on&nbsp;a pole, then rises up to confront a winged person in painterly clouds above. After a confrontation Twigs plummets back to the ground, into a subterranean pit.&nbsp;Huang&nbsp;followed up with&nbsp;an Instagram Story with side-by-side screengrabs from the two videos, adding: "There's no winning when this happens. Been copied before but this feels different. Lil Nas X's label contacted me end of last year. Pivoted away then hired the same choreographer from 'Cellophane.'"Adding the tags of the artist, director and label Columbia Records, Huang added: "Consider the power you wield and the artists you harm when you capitalize on our blood, sweat, tears, and emotional labor."Huang then expanded his thoughts on the matter in a Twitter thread on March 28th, beginning by expressing support for&nbsp;Lil Nas X: “I’m a fan of&nbsp;@LilNasX. ‘Old Town Road’ is iconic.”&nbsp;He continued:&nbsp;“Sharing collaborators is common. Seeing the ‘Cellophane’ choreographer collab with Lil Nas X is awesome (love a Satan dance). Sharing aesthetics and paying homage is part of the creative process. Collective consciousness exists.”He went on to say: “Years of work went into the creation of ‘Cellophane’, from physical training to the emotional labor of unpacking Twigs’ life to construct images told her story of trauma and recovery. ‘Cellophane’ was a confession in the most vulnerable sense.“When an artist is in a position of power (amplified with the help of major record labels, social media, PR, etc) and repurposes someone’s labor and ideas to serve their brand image, they cause harm by displacing the efforts of the artists who did the original leg work.“Intentional or not, copying other artists’ work happens,” Huang continued. “Making music videos is a labor of love. The demand for content pushed by major labels renders our work disposable and pits artists against each other.”Huang then pointed out that he was&nbsp;referring to “major record labels run by white male executives”, saying they “pit women and QBIPOC creators against each other." He finished on Twitter by saying:&nbsp;“I urge the music community, particularly major record labels like&nbsp;@ColumbiaRecords&nbsp;to respect directors, uphold artistic accountability and honor the ingenuity of artists dedicating their blood sweat and tears to imagine better futures amidst a broken industry. We can do better.”At the time of writing, there had been comment made by the artist, director or label involved in making the Montero video, with regard to Huang's comments.

The change is is perhaps in the world around Bjork: it&#39;s turned into a much less forbidding and much brighter place, and Andrew Thomas Huang brings a CGI-enhanced&nbsp;vision to work with the extraordinary irridescent garment,&nbsp;designed by Alessandro&nbsp;Michele, that&#39;s worn by Bjork.&ldquo;The Gate is essentially a love song, but I say &lsquo;love&rsquo; in a more transcendent way,&quot; Björk has told Dazed magazine.&nbsp;&quot;Vulnicura was about a very personal loss, and I think this new album is about a love that&rsquo;s even greater. Originally commissioned and premiered at the Museum of Modern Art, New York as part of&nbsp;the Björk&nbsp;retrospective that ended on June 7th, this epic, ten-minute video for&nbsp;Björk&#39;s Black Lake by her regular collaborator Andrew Thomas Huang&nbsp;has finally been released online.It features a raw, candid&nbsp;performance by the ever-captivating&nbsp;Björk, enhanced by the&nbsp;rugged backdrop of her native Iceland&#39;s&nbsp;natural wonders. Caves, molten blue lava, and desolate&nbsp;green meadows assist in the pained&nbsp;expression conveyed by an ardent performance.&nbsp;

She was briefly wrongfooted by having to rush its release a few weeks ago, but now&nbsp;the visual campaign for Björk&#39;s new album Vulnicura is in full swing, taking shape in a characteristically unconventional fashion. And it&nbsp;looks like she&#39;s established a collaboration with a super-talented director to rival her long-term creative relationship with Michel Gondry.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her work with Andrew Thomas Huang began with the video for&nbsp;Mutual Core from her last album, Biophilia. Now on Vulnicura, they have created <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiXQ5qaUGDI" target="_blank">the &#39;sound and vision installation&#39; for Black Lake</a> - shown in a special auditorium at the current Bjork exhibition&nbsp;at MoMA in New York. They have also created a &#39;virtual reality&#39; video for Stonemilker, also showing at MoMA PS1, and at Rough Trade record shops in London and Brooklyn.&nbsp;And also this.&nbsp;The video for the track Family&nbsp;is&nbsp;described as a &#39;moving album cover&#39; for Vulnicura (slightly confusing, as it&#39;s actually a lot less like the album cover shot than the video for <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2015/03/16/bj%C3%B6rk-lionsong-inez-vinoodh" target="_blank">Lionsong</a> by Inez and Vanoodh). But in effect Huang uses his considerable multi-disciplinary talents to build the Björk universe from scratch, starting in CGI and then merging into live action.It&#39;s&nbsp;not just creation, but a kind of regeneration, as we begin to distinguish a&nbsp;figure, prone on a&nbsp;rock and split down the middle. This becomes Bjork, lying on a rock within a familiar Icelandic landscape,&nbsp;and repeats the&nbsp;visual motif from the other Vulnicura videos&nbsp;of a small exposed area of chest, symbolic of a damaged heart.It finishes with a symbolic CGI-enhanced repair job, indicating how the healing process continues - an uplifting message, that draws the viewer into the wonderful world created by Björk - and Andrew Thomas Huang.&nbsp;

Andrew Thomas Huang&#39;s impressive talent has earned him a&nbsp;&nbsp;best new director nomination at next week&#39;s UK Music Video Awards 2013 with just a couple of music videos under his belt (although they happen to be for Bjork and Sigur Ros). Now he brings us his third, and takes things to a new level, for Atoms For Peace. Civilizations build and crumble under the shifting sands of Andrew&#39;s wholly distinctive universe - a remarkable combination of in-camera and computer effects &ndash;&nbsp;with Thom Yorke, as a broken&nbsp;Greek statue at its&nbsp;centre.Having filmed Thom in LA, live footage and stop frame sets were then re-worked in CG, in order to turn the singer into an Ozymandias-style statue in the desert.&nbsp;Meticulous work was then done in the BlinkInk studio, using specially written VFX programs to cope with Andrew&rsquo;s vision for the design and animation.&nbsp;The result is an eye-melting tour of mountain ranges, crumbling cities, and psychedelic cave systems, to the pulsating sound of Before Your Very Eyes. Awe-inspiring, mesmerizing and&nbsp;enchanting.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Darker, heavier, more performance-orientated &ndash; and definitely yellower&hellip; Andrew Thomas Huang has followed up his astonishing video for Bj&ouml;rk&rsquo;s Mutual Core with a surprising package for the other preeminent musical artists of Iceland, Sigur R&oacute;s and their song Brennisteinn, from new album Kveikur.
The surprise is to see the band actually performing in one of their videos &ndash; a first, perhaps? But this is also much more than simply a performance. Thomas creates extraordinary images that suggest moments from ancient myths, of heroes battling with the elements, and a distinctive use of colour. Brennisteinn is Icelandic for &lsquo;brimstone&rsquo; or &lsquo;sulphur&rsquo; &ndash; so flashes of yellow bursting out of the monochrome. It&rsquo;s smoking&hellip;
