The Smile give a private performance to the most challenging of audiences, in Paul Thomas Anderson's charming promo for Friend Of A Friend: a class of nursery school-aged children. It's a brave feat, giving a surprise performance to some of the most brutal critics on Earth, who have yet to develop the social skills to hide their true feelings. In this respect, Anderson's latest video for The Smile is a wonderful experiment.The band - Thom Yorke, Johnny Greenwood and Tom Skinnner - get on with the job of performing a song which may be the their finest achievement to date. They set up shop in the school hall whilst the kids file in to the benches and then spectate, giving unfiltered reactions that range from apathetic to awestruck (usually when the lightshow begins). It's a wonderful visual, meditating on the relationship between musicians and their audience, and builds to a poignant, engaged finale, which will warm up even the coldest of hearts. Nizar Shad directs an upbeat promo for Prinz, Rushwan and Jermaine Edwards.The story of Beautiful Day starts back in 2014, when singer-songwriter Edwards debuted the track in Jamaica. In 2017, ten-year-old Rushawn Ewears was captured singing it by his teacher at school, and after being shared on social media over the next few years, it has recently gained huge popularity on TikTok, leading to this collaboration. The magical journey of the track is complimented by a cheery, optimistic video, which features Prinz performing in and around a church, intercut with footage of Ewears' original school video. Bright and optimistic, it's a great little project that exudes a joyous energy.

The Black Keys attempt to reconnect to their blue-collar roots, in Bryan Schlam's uninhibited promo for Wild Child. In a riotous back-to-school concept, we see Patrick and Danny of the BKs take on a janitor and chef role at a high school full of drugs, fighting and various other disorderly behaviour. With a cast of teachers who are just as bad than the students - if not worse - all hell breaks loose when they take on their new roles. But will the Keys succeed to helps these kids, and these adults, become upstanding citizens? Er, no. But then, they can always go back to being rich rock stars... Playful and bawdy, Schlam packs out each scene with tonnes of laughs and gross-out humour, and the performances are spot-on all round. He's a master at this sort of thing.
