Massive Attack & Tom Waits 'Boots On The Ground' by Robert Del Naja and thefinaleye

Promonews - 21st Apr 2026
Massive Attack have collaborated with the Tom Waits on a track that engages with events happening in the United States right now, Waits' unmistakeable growl reflecting on growing abuse of military power, with a haunting opening of a person struggling to breathe echoing the police manoevre that killed George Floyd in 2020. The accompanying film by Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack and US photo artist thefinaleye stares at the reality of America's internal militarisation squarely in the face, through a combination of photo montage and captions.
As explained in the description on YouTube: "This montage work portrays a momentous American epoch that is yet to be named, and comes in the aftermath of the largest public protests in American history - focused on opposition to ICE raids, the militarisation of domestic forces, and state authoritarianism."
Through powerful imagery of demonstrations from Black Lives Matter to the protests against the ICEÂ occupation in Minneapolis, the film is itself appears to be part of a growing movement by artists to address the current political situation in the US and express their opposition to Trump's internal war on immigrants through visual as well as musical expression.Â
The Boots On The Ground film is furnished with verified facts, including those that reflect the trauma caused by war, with the huge issue of homelessness and mental illness among US army veterans. As it states on YouTube, the film quotes statistics and research by "American Immigration Council, American Civil Liberties Union, Inside Higher Ed, National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, US National Library of Medicine, US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Privacy International, FactCheck.org.
