Liz Wong 'Rooted' by Ryan Kochberg
Promonews - 25th June 2025
Ryan Kochberg’s video for Hong Kong-born, British-based singer Liz Wong is a paean to mental health, magical realism and artistic resurrection.
Inspired in part by the films of Jonathan Glazer, the video for Rooted was shot with 25 home security cameras hidden in the walls of a modernist London mansion.
The lo-fi monochrome images capture LCDS contemporary dancer Carys Belle cavorting within the rooms of the house in a progressively more violent and self-destructive fashion, juxtaposed with Wong’s plaintive voice, belting out existentialist lyrics.
The dancer's knees bounce off of cold terrazzo floors, sending her body colliding into hard, pointed, virtually anti-human furniture. All of that before she scrambles upstairs and submerges herself in a bath full of roots and vines, whereupon the protagonist is saved by a mysterious white light that seems to emanate from Wong.
