Molchat Doma 'Сон (Son)' by Bryan M. Ferguson

Scottish director Bryan M. Ferguson directs a breathtaking fantasy in black, white and numerous shades of grey, for eclectic Belarusian rock band Molchat Doma's COH, or Son.
This is a hugely ambitious work for the band that embraces a gamut of rock music from prog to post punk and synth-pop, and features that sense of grim alienation that is feature of Ferguson's music video work for Arab Strap and others.
But harnessed to that, is a narrative where the protagonist enters a dreamlike world via an encounter with a pyramid in the Scottish Highlands. And according to the director, that pyramid actually exists...
"I really wanted to make something emotionally charged but atmospheric to match the song's vibe," says Ferguson. "The song is essentially about a dream, so I wanted to explore those moments when you're not quite fully conscious of your reality due to dream residue.
"The band had explained that the main themes of the song were fear, hopelessness and anxiety, particularly in relation to their own lives and moving to an unfamiliar place. Those themes are universal and they bleed into the video through a Lynchian-style odyssey of alienation where our protagonist discovers an isolated stone pyramid in the middle of a dreamlike state, breaking the boundaries of reality by entering the structure through liquid and light to be met with darkness. An infinite void of nothing with the exception of ghostlike shapes.
"The protagonist is then not able to connect or adjust to this environment, literally trying to plug themselves into this world and finding it increasingly difficult to become a part of it."
Ferguson confirms that making the video was a huge challenge. "For the first section, we travelled to the highlands of Scotland," he says. "We trekked up a mountain to film the only pyramid that exists in the country. Incredible landscapes but the wind could rip you from your shoes.
"The second section of the video was shot in a studio in Glasgow where we shot all of our performers with a thermographic camera (thermal image camera that captures infrared radiation instead of visible light) and then shooting our main actor with a standard camera and blended the two in real time, capturing everything we could in-camera.
"Almost all of the video, once inside the pyramid, is carefully planned/timed practical effects to give a more tangible feeling of having one foot inside of a dream."
