Calum Macdiarmid directs an everyday suburban story of pre-first date nerves - with added iguana - for The Modfather's new release.

The video for Paul Weller's Rise Up Singing introduces Joe Freeman as the teenage boy anxiously preparing for that first date, and facing the possiblity that the date is not going to show.

Taking place in a house with many original 1960s features helps with the timeless kitchen sink appeal of the scenario - but Macdiarmid throws in a curveball with the addition of a green, ring-tailed iguana (called Flo) adding an exotic touch to the prosaic English suburban setting. 

Flo doesn't quite steal the show from the lead. He is the son of Martin Freeman - a big Weller fan himself, who starred in the Pick It Up promo just under a decade ago - and having been cast by Karmel Cochrane on the basis of his casting tape, Joe Freeman demonstrates an easy charm on-screen that suggests he is a chip off the old block.

“The video was particularly fun because it felt like a short film with a focus on narrative which made getting the necessary coverage much easier," says Calum Macdiarmid. "The hardest challenge was trying to tell a super minimalist concept - boy gets ready for date - in a way that gave it a little arc, and went with the flow of the music. My ambition was to make it feel almost like the music was a score written for the story, using the rise and fall of the energy to punctuate certain moments.”
