The Longest Johns 'Wellerman' by Matt Harris-Freeth
Rob Ulitski - 20th Apr 2021
Matt Harris-Freeth directs a quirky cinematic ocean voyage for British Folk group The Longest Johns.
The video is set to the band's own version of Wellerman, which went viral on TikTok in 2020 and kicked off a global interest in sea shanties.
Shot on location along the Jurassic Coast, the video sees the band deliver a wry performance, living in comfort on the deck of a sailing vessel and passing their time in various ways. They await the arrival of the Wellerman, a ship that will bring much-needed provisions.
DoP Sarah Smither creates a cinematic and vibrant aesthetic through the use of anamorphic lenses and sweeping drone shots, capturing the atmosphere and textures of the nautical setting, whilst elevating the surreal, anachonistic vibes of the concept.
