Chronixx 'Cool As The Breeze' by Meji Alabi
Meji Alabi directs a love letter to Kingston, Jamaica with his new video for Chronixx.
Shot largely on 16mm, the colourful promo highlights the energy of the capital city, elevated by slick performance and an unabashed love for dance and music culture. Oh, and Chronixx travels serenely around Kingston on a floating armchair...
DoP Jaime Ackroyd captures the unique vibe of the city - and the people within it - through energetic handheld shots and plenty of zooms, creating a dynamic and lively aesthetic.
MEJI ALABI:
We decided to keep it authentic inner city vibes.
"It was such an incredible time shooting in Kingston with Chronixx for such a great track. It's really a love song to Kingston and we wanted to just make it feel as real as possible...kind of.
"Often times you find yourself only at the beach in Jamaica, so we decided to keep it authentic inner city vibes. That led us to Tivoli Gardens, which ended up being where we shot literally the whole promo.
"The team was so essential in bringing this idea to life. Jaime Ackroyd (the DP) actually brought his old Aaton 16mm film camera with him from London which we shot most of it on besides some of our zooms. Seriously, him and Mike Hannides (1st AC) are incredible. Shooting on film is nervewracking enough in London, but they just handled it so well considering we were on and off of rooftops and vehicles most of the day in the blazing Kingston heat.
"Thankfully, Cinelab London was running a reduced service so we barely got the film processed as everything was going into lockdown. We really captured some special and amazing images which Matt Newman cut down nicely via Zoom sessions with me and my spotty wifi!"
