Zoë Mc Pherson 'Tenace' by Alessandra Leone
Rob Ulitski - 7th July 2020
Alessandra Leone directs a hypnotic visual for Zoë Mc Pherson's Tenace.
The concept explores an unwaivering obsession with dance, and the way one can empower themselves, accept uncertainty and move into a deeper mindset through movement.
Mc Pherson is the sole focus throughout, and her interaction with DoP Julian Moser's spectacular lighting design elevates the entire visual.
The opening vignette has an overwhelmingly orange glow, almost post-apocalyptic and nuclear in its presentation. Then the cooler blue tones kick in, and the final vignette cuts through with hyperactive laser beams that track and trace the artist's body. Raki Fernandez's inspired styling introduces reflective materials and futuristic textures, tying together the artist and her environment.
"Zoë's insistently moving presence is restless," explains Alessandro Leone. "She sways between calibrated body motion in repetition, and more frantic movement where her body raves and releases, driven by an inner force, or by the circular cracking sound, or both.
"The camera’s position grants us a view over it, half-way between wide-angled contemplation and subjectivity. This makes the video, in the end, open to your interpretation."
