Jehnny Beth 'I'm The Man' by Anthony Byrne
David Knight - 5th Dec 2019
It begins with the dulcet tones of Cillian Murphy, in voice-over, reading a monologue entitled A Place Above, as the camera closes in to a neon-washed alley where Jehnny Beth stands in the road, holding up traffic.
And from this terrific start Anthony Byrne's video for I'm The Man never loosens its grip. It's shot as a one take video, where (after Murphy's contribution) the Savages singer performs I'm The Man - featured in the recent series of Peaky Blinders - and saunters down a Manchester street, from one scary confrontation to another.
Byrne, a regular Peaky Blinders director, employs the same bravura style of filmmaking that has become a hallmark of the TV show. Manchester is miraculously transformed into a modern noir film set. The choreographed one-shot is a nod to the classic musical. And Jehnny Beth is a compelling presence throughout.
