Lewis Capaldi 'Bruises' by Emil Nava
Passions collide in Emil Nava's fiery new visual for Bruises by Lewis Capaldi.
A young couple are stood in a yard full of shipping containers and derelict fenced-off areas. They remain at arm's length as they stare deeply into each other's eyes, tears streaming down their cheeks. As black and white snapshots of their past fire onto screen, we are introduced to their tumultuous relationship and the rollercoaster of emotions they have experienced together.
Moments later, groups of fired-up people march towards the fences behind each of the characters. Representing the pent up emotion and frustration, these performers are colour-coded to either white clothing (to match the male character) or burnt copper (to match the female character). In a powerful and frenetic climax, molotov cocktails are thrown (in turn burning Capaldi's piano to the ground, and setting him alight), horses appear and fences are destroyed and pushed to the ground.
The emotion is palpable, and the frenzy of people, props and animals creates a war-like environment that perfectly mirrors the track. Capaldi gives an emotional and confident performance, rounding off a great concept perfectly executed by the team.
