Delanila 'Time Slips Away' by Charlie Mysak

Rob Ulitski - 23rd Sept 2019

A solitary dancer explores the disconnected world in which we live, in the video for Delanila, directed by Charlie Mysak.

Starring emerging dance star Leal Zielinska, the video was shot on film across two freezing cold days in January: one in an abandoned military base in Fort Monmouth NJ, and the other in a modern apartment in Brooklyn. At its surface, it’s about a girl lost in the corridors of her imagination, creating her own dream world to dance in. At its heart, it’s about the feelings of disconnection and isolation in the Instagram age. Everything appears sunny, when in reality many are scrolling from the dark of their bedrooms.

Bursting with dark and sensual imagery, David Vollrath does a great job in creating an introspective atmosphere with high contrast cinematography, intertwined with silhouettes and glitchy snapshots of life. The shaping of the shadows in the darker scenes are particularly inspired, masking the faces of the characters to suggest that in the age of social media, we are anonymous and disconnected from society.

Delanila's scenes are strong and effective, set against a black infinity background and focusing on the beauty of the performance and the poignance of the words she sings. The project is part of a forthcoming album called Overloaded, which is inspired these strange, hyper-connected yet spiritually disconnected, times that we live in.
