Sisterhood 'Anthem - Ooh Child' by Kathryn Ferguson
David Knight - 12th Oct 2018
Just in time for the International Day of the Girl comes this joyful burst of positivity from a new visual project by the American organisation Girls Who Code, whose mission is to close the gender gap in tech.
Directed by Kathryn Ferguson, its the video for the anthemic single for the visual album project Sisterh>>d to celebrate girls everywhere fighting for change in their communities. The track is a remake of the iconic activist anthem Ooh Child - a remake of the Five Stairsteps’ 1970’s hit, with Nigerian-American rapper Chika, singer/songwriter/producer Tiffany Gouché, and rapper/singer Regan Aliyah. The Ferguson-directed video features the artists, and Little Miss Flint (8 year old Flint, MI resident who caught the attention of President Obama for her concern with the towns water).
Ferguson has conjured great openhearted performances here from a big cast of dancers and extras - include real 'girls who code'. They are situated in what looks like a school that is essentially a building site, artfully dressed to look like a positive symbol of change.. In keeping with the mood of the whole video, you get a sense that something really great - and importantly, permanent – can be built here.
