Django Django 'Marble Skies' by Jed Hart

David Knight - 21st June 2018

Django Django head out on a trek into the unknown in Jed Hart's impressively epic video for Marble Skies.

The four flag-bearing bandmembers are on a journey through a hostile desert wilderness, one that takes them into a surprising place. And ultimately they find they can change the weather, to suit the songtitle - even in the desert.

It's also a journey that's characterised by outstanding black and white imagery, from the epic widescreen to intense close-ups, that encapsulate the harshness of the Californian desert location, and also hark back to some classic videos too.

JED HART:

"I was drawn to the project by the band’s brief – their visual references included Woman In The Dunes and Leonard Cohen’s First We Take Manhattan promo) and particularly by the overtly cinematic feel that they wanted for the promo. I found the simple premise of the band on some form of pilgrimage through this barren, empty landscape both enigmatic and enthralling.

"In keeping with our references, I approached the project as much like a short film shoot as a promo. Rather than bombarding the viewer with imagery, I wanted to gradually immerse them in the landscape and the bands journey, so both our shooting style and our final edit reflected this approach.

"Despite many of our influences being from the past, we very much wanted a timeless feeling rather than anything that felt specifically “retro.” The band designed the flags and put together their own costumes from a range of modern and vintage materials, which allowed their own personality to shine.

"It was certainly a challenging shoot that, despite its narrative simplicity, took us a long way off the beaten track into the Californian desert and required drones, fire, rain, and a lot of trekking, all in tough and hot conditions. What you get on screen in return is something that feels authentic, because it is."
