Rosie Lowe 'Woman' by Nadia
Cat Velez - 3rd Feb 2016
Rosie Lowe's musings on womanhood has been given a poignant visual treatment by director Nadia Marquard Otzen.
In it, Rosie is flanked by clone-like female dancers, all sporting blonde bobs and trenchcoats, pouting and posing in a pastel-coloured office. With a minimal, thought-provoking choreography and complimentary camera movement, the video deconstructs the self-conscious, poised and ultimately fake personas that women feel expected to assume, contrasted with their real selves, laid bare.
NADIA:
"It was a very collaborative process with Rosie. We wanted to explore themes of female expectation. The disengagement from a true self. Playing with ideas of disguise - a dressed self verses an undressed self. Create a raw and pure portrait. Something that was both pretty and ugly, defiant and fragile. Drawing inspiration from a line of other female visual artists exploring similar themes such as Cindy Sherman, Vanessa Beecroft and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker."
