Having excelled with their lyric videos for the likes of Rolling Stones, Vampire Weekend and Lily Allen, Trunk Animation have been called upon to create one for Kylie's cover of Yazoo's Only You - which became a Christmas No. 1 for The Flying Pickets in the early Eighties – from her new Christmas album. 

But rather than making it text-heavy, director Layla Atkinson has taken a more pared-back approach. If the Flying Pickets accapella version was unusual at the time, the surprise here is that Kylie is duetting with James Corden - now a chat show host in the US. Using After Effects Layla concentrated on animating two simple star elements that represented Kylie and James.

The stars' journey conveys the relationship of the two performers captured in the duet, and a simple typeface keeps the focus of the video on their interaction, rather than solely on the text. And it all feels perfectly festive.

LAYLA ATKINSON:

"Once I had decided on the look and feel of the video I thought it would be a simple and straightforward process. However, we spent a long time trying to find a way to smoothly animate the star, its trail and the gap between them.

"After a morning of tests we found that using a concoction of particle emitters, masks and splines achieved the perfect look. Then it was just down to getting the timing right. While it can be frustrating, the sense of achievement when you find a way to make something work rather than abandon the effect you want is wonderful.”
