Faul 'Something New' by André Maat
David Knight - 18th Nov 2014
The video for Faul's Something New, directed by André Maat, tells the story of two friends trying out a new kind of digital gadget, which creates colorful masks on their faces, that evolve as they stroll around town and into the night.
Shot in Berlin - and visual effects created at Arri Berlin - André overcame the challenges of tracking the mask design and animation to the two heroes' faces.
ANDRE MAAT:
"I wanted to create a subtle drug theme to match the lyrics and therefore combined a laidback 'hanging around' vibe with some trippy moments.Almost all scenes were shot on a steadicam and in combination with slow motion this really created the pace I was looking for, capturing the boys walk around town and play with the effects of the mask.
"The video was shot in the outskirts of Berlin. The look of the masks was inspired by the polygon style of face-recognition software plus and from there we added the trippy effects."
