Kwes 'Rollerblades' by Ian Pons Jewell
David Knight - 29th Jan 2014
In his second video for Kwes – following Bashful in 2012 - Ian Pons Jewell has created a dark and minimal theatricality around the theme of the song Rollerblades, from Kwes's acclaimed debut album ilp.
It features an enigmatic dancing rollerblader – skating pro Juan Tocino – who takes a plug out of Kwes’s neck, draining him until just a pile of clothes is left. Well, we are mostly water apparently. Especially at the moment.
Ian Pons Jewell:
"It was a great pleasure to work with Kwes again as I find his music really inspiring to write to. It has a strong sense of narrative about it, with a structure to it that's very different to a lot of music out, taking you for a strange ride. The skater idea came about directly from Kwes' lyrics and developed from there, with the water theme also being in connection to the final sound.
"We feel really lucky to have found Juan Tocino who trained ex champion Artistic Rollerkskaters. Someone with his ability, look, but above all performance ability don't come by often. Pushing the steadicam more than usual with Doug was great, letting shots play out a lot longer than we usually would, partly due to how amazing Juan was. Though fully planned out structurally before, we finalised the blocking and choreography on the day, with Juan never missing a mark."
