The senior Trim editor reflects on the lessons learned cutting promos early in his career, returning to music videos this year for Jon Hopkins, and the special place in his heart for Steven Spielberg.Like many other of London's top&nbsp;editors now working mainly in commercials, Thomas Grove Carter cut his teeth cutting music videos - in all shapes and sizes and in large numbers. Back in the early 2010s, his prolific output included some of the outstanding promos of the times, working with a generation of directors also making their mark. It's probably easier to list the emerging directing talent of that era that he didn't work with.Thomas&nbsp;has been with&nbsp;Trim Editing since 2013, where he is now one of the Whitechapel-based editing company's most experienced and garlanded editors. Working mainly in commercials, his credits include acclaimed ads by the likes of Daniel Wolfe, Kim Gehrig, Sebastian Strasser, Chris Barrett &amp; Luke Taylor - and most recently on a new Apple ad with Place Beyond The Pines&nbsp;director Derek Cianfrance.He's also making time for the right music video project, and in the past year that's included promos for Peggy Gou, Judeline and Jon Hopkins - with another longtime collaborator Dave Bullivant. Just cutting loads and loads was&nbsp;really important to me. Even if the videos were sometimes bad, they all added to my&nbsp;creative skills, confidence and relationships with directors.The ones with the ‘worst’ rushes are often the one where you learn most. You’re the last one who can make it&nbsp;something good - and that's exciting.I’m not sure there is one project that got me noticed. It’s always been about the&nbsp;relationships I’ve built with people. But my first MVA nomination,&nbsp;for editing&nbsp;Hadouken!'s Mic Check in 2010, was lovely. Being 9 years old and seeing Jurassic Park in the cinema is still my favourite film experience. It’s a pretty long track, with a very simple video concept. It was a real balancing act and a joy to help bring it to life. India Harris reunites&nbsp;with Confidence Man&nbsp;and pulls off a stunning departure for the Aussie dance-pop duo, combining high energy and high concept for their latest banger.The video for So What opens on aerial shot of a London tower block, and begins to infinitely zoom, into the pair's high rise home, and through into a succession of scenarios, where they party, then after-party, then party again.Then in the second part of the film, Confidence Man's Grace stands on the roof of the tower block, then falls - continuing to energetically perform while plummeting back to earth - where the final section plays out in reverse.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Shot in London's hottest club venue, The Cause, with slick VFX, stylised&nbsp;cinematography&nbsp;and a dark, almost dystopian aesthetic,&nbsp;this comes in&nbsp;a stark contrast to the style of previous recent Confidence Man vids - including Harris's vibrant video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2023/08/08/dj-seinfeld-ft-confidence-man-now-u-do-india-harris/82744" target="_blank">Now U Do (with DJ Seinfeld)</a>. In our latest Snapshot Q&amp;A, Trim Editing junior editor Liv Ay reveals how her music video editing career began at film school, the influence of Harmony Korine&nbsp;and the lure of a homecoming trip to Turkey.Olivia 'Liv' Ay has been making big strides ever since joining <a href="https://trimediting.com/" target="_blank">Trim Editing</a> in London in 2022. Everything about this project was super-collaborative. As their long-awaited new album ROMANCE is released, comes another&nbsp;remarkable Fontaines D.C. video - and another tour de force by Luna Carmoon.The director who made her music video debut with&nbsp;the intense drama of <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2024/08/08/fontaines-dc-heres-thing-luna-carmoon/87678" target="_blank">Here's The Thing</a> (after her acclaimed feature debut Hoard) quickly returns to duties with the Fontaines with an extraordinary piece of work for In A Modern World: a surreal comedy-drama, featuring an incredible central performance&nbsp;from Ewan Mitchell (House of the Dragon, Saltburn) - as a character engaged in the netherworld of a very niche, indeed bizarre and&nbsp;dangerous sport.&nbsp;It's car-jitsu - jiu-jitsu, within the interior&nbsp;of a car. Invented <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1f7r0cfaXc" target="_blank">just a couple of years ago, in Chicago</a>, Mitchell's character is the protagonist through which Carmoon explores an absurd yet compelling experience. At first, its just the raw, explosive physicality involved of clashing bodies within a ridiculously small space - which is surprising and hugely intense&nbsp;in itself.Then the director adds another dimension to the&nbsp;brutal clash of bodies - what is happening outside the car, the voyeuristic relationship of passers-by who become the audience to Mitchell and a succession of combatants, a kind of sexual frisson that is created through the intensity of the action. The parallels with another in-car activity is undeniable.&nbsp;It's&nbsp;Fight Club&nbsp;crossed&nbsp;with dogging.&nbsp;Horrible, painful to watch yet hilarous, it's mesmerizing stuff, a fever dream. And it's hard to undersell how good Mitchell is in this. Or how impressive it is in terms of the vision and world creation by Carmoon. Just great.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;

Filmmaker Luna Carmoon, the director of well-received feature debut Hoard, now&nbsp;unveils her debut music video for Fontaines D.C. - where she brings a modern twist to cult classics The Craft and The Lost Boys.In the Here's The Thing video, Grace Collender plays a girl ostracized by her peers during a community dance competition. After a humiliating fall on stage, she finds herself entangled with a group of outsider girls who begin to infiltrate her life and dreams. The narrative unfolds with elements of supernatural intrigue, as these enigmatic girls lead our protagonist into a world of chaos and rebellion.With rich cinematography from Antoine Cormier, Carmoon creates an unsettling, gripping atmosphere. Geerten Harmens directs a trippy fever dream of a promo for pop-dance duo Sad Night Dynamite, presented through a frantic montage of mobile phone footage, intercut with social media iconography, garish textures and dynamic animation.&nbsp;The video for Sugabby narratively explores the idea of dating an older woman, with the tale unfolding through a&nbsp;menagerie of media and different screen devices. Slipping from reality into an uncanny valley of fantasy, achieved at&nbsp;a breathless speed Harmens and his team provide a srong addition to&nbsp;the off-kilter and blackly comic aesthetic of previous SND videos.&nbsp;&nbsp;"This video has been extremely interesting to figure out," the director&nbsp;explains. "Together with the crew we had to think about a simultaneous social media storyline that all came together in it's own little hyperactive viral cultured way in the edit."We had to work with about eight hours of iPhone footage to compile it in under three minutes.
