Chris Ullens returns to familiar territory to weave a mindboggling&nbsp;tale&nbsp;in stop motion animation for UK underground hiphop rapper and producer Lex Amarni.As in his videos like <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/10/05/fergie-love-blind-chris-ullens/49896" target="_blank">Fergie</a>&nbsp;and <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/05/01/lee-ann-womack-hollywood-chris-ullens/58486" target="_blank">Lee Ann Womack</a>, Ullens uses dolls in The Kill 2 to tell the story of two LA girls whose addiction to doomscrolling on social media takes a terrifying&nbsp;turn. The result is jawdropping ultra-violence, just like in his seminal horror video,&nbsp;featuring a demonic teddy bear,&nbsp;for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2012/10/25/two-fingers-vengeance-rhythm-chris-ullens/15460" target="_blank">Two Fingers</a>.Things get wild as soon as the girls leave the comfort of their high-rise apartment, to meet the influencers who dominate their social feeds -&nbsp;and their killing spree begins. And even if the protagonists are Barbie dolls,&nbsp;what follows is still not for the faint-hearted.&nbsp;In fact, that possibly makes it worse.This pair&nbsp;are definitely the gruesome twosome - and the ending could not be more explosive.

Rosie Brear directs a vampiric love story for Tatyana, dealing with competition for the object of her affections in a nightclub with deadly efficiency.&nbsp;The promo for Venus &amp; Adonis opens with the singer bloodstained and smoking a cigarette, before we jump into a recollection of the events of the night, where Tatyana goes about her&nbsp;business of removing rivals for the love of the club DJ.&nbsp;Shot at The Cause in Canning Town, with a mix of traditional and lo-fi digital cameras by DoP Rik Burnell, the video is a feverish, bloody trip, with an underground feel - and Tatyana delivers an absorbing performance throughout.&nbsp;

He's thoughtful, inquisitive,&nbsp;more soulful than ever. That's what&nbsp;happened here, as Myles and Gustav of Broken Antenna explain:“We enjoy the collaborative process of working with other directors, as it's always fascinating to see the way that they work and how they engage with the ideas and production in a different way," they say. "We are good mates with Tim and he brought up the idea of collaborating on this job with Rory, as we'd worked with him before and we thought that it would be really interesting.&nbsp;"We all came up with the ideas together on what was a really fast-moving production. We teamed up with DoP Thom Neal, through whom we know Tim and producer Josh Hillman who we worked with on our previous video for Rory. It had a proper collective spirit.&nbsp; [We] Supported one another and split the video into different scenes which we developed individually and brought our ideas back to the group and reworked them together."It was great to work again with Rory and his team and hopefully we will all be doing more together again soon.”

It’s one of the few films this year I’ve left the cinema just grinning, without any comments; I've been told I can be a bit of a harsh critic, so this is quite rare!Favourite song/album/music artist this year? I’ve been listening to The Paul Simon Songbook a lot this year, with some Billy Joel mixed in too. I’ve ended up in <a href="https://www.slimjimsliquorstore.com/" target="_blank">Slim Jim’s</a> quite a few times; not sure I’d call this a favourite though!In terms of the music video-related jobs of the past year or so, what were the most rewarding creatively, and why?Tove Lo – Let Me Go Oh Oh (directed by Fa and Fon) and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhAaIvmZxZw" target="_blank">Desire</a> (directed by David Wilson). These were two of four promos going out, and it was an interesting challenge to simultaneously grade each to have its own visual identity whilst also making all four feel like they were in the same world. David was jumping between my suite and Matt Turner’s (who graded the other two) which was quite amusing![vidtoken data:2]Glass Animals' The Extremely Existentially Late Show,&nbsp;directed by Jim Wilmot. This was a trio of VEVO live performances, that were also cut together in one long mega-mix, also featuring the artist’s dog! We went with a film emulation look in the end, and I got to use a preset I’d made myself. Luckily it worked, and we were both really happy with the final look. It was also a great challenge to copy the look of the CRT monitors in Show Pony specifically![vidtoken data:3]What are your favourite other (non-mv) projects of the past year or so?The short film Rise, directed by SHIRZAN [about the women's protests in Iran], is one of the projects I’m most proud of, and pleased to have been involved with. It ended up an Immortal Award too, which was a nice bonus![vidtoken data:4]Life Uncensored&nbsp;for Lionsgate+, directed by Diego Nuñez Irigoyen, was fun - we played around with varying degrees of film emulation which I always enjoy doing. This was another job where I used my ‘magic emulation box’, and it was shortlisted for the Craft: Colour Grading at the Berlin Commercial 2024 Awards which was a great ego boost for me.There are a few projects in the works that have been wicked to grade this year, and I can’t wait for them to be out in the world.What’s the most surprising thing that’s happened this year?&nbsp;I did a solo trip to Japan, which is the first time I’ve ever travelled alone – it was unbelievable, and somewhere I’d love to visit again. It was also quite liberating to be able to do exactly what I wanted, when I wanted. Plus, I was able to spend some time sorting my brain out and came back far calmer and more refreshed![vidtoken data:5]<blockquote>This was another job where I used my magic emulation box.</blockquote>Your top suggestion to change and improve how the music video industry works? It’s difficult to have a proper opinion on this, as I’m only in post, so I don’t really know the nuances of production. However, I do think it would be nice if there was a bit more time and budget put aside for post!Music videos are my favourite things to work on, but a lot of the time it’s beg/borrow/steal to get anything done. On the other hand, it is quite amazing to see what can be achieved on shoestring budgets, and it’s always quite satisfying to have helped in some way.What are you looking forward to for the rest of the year? In terms of work, I’m excited to carry on getting stuck in at Studio RM; I’ve only been here a short while, and I’m loving it! Otherwise, I have lots of plans with family and friends to enjoy.
