Passenger | It Was Gonna Be You (Official Video)

Liam Pethick and Nic Minns collaborate to direct a thrillingly energetic promo for the stellar team-up of Martin Garrix and Ed Sheeran. The video for Repeat It spans a series of docu-style vignettes and big stage shows, and also incorporating historical footage of the artists to build a celebration of their respective careers and an eventual collaboration. It's a visual that benefits hugely from the long working relationship that Pethick has developed with Ed Sheeran, filming him in numerous situations, over the past few years."The brief from Ed and Martin was simple: start with their reunion in Santiago and trace their lives backwards over the last 10 years until we arrive at where the song first began," he explains. "From the start, Nic and I wanted to reimagine what an archival music video could feel like; not something purely historical, but something alive and intimate. That led us to build the visual language around split screens, archival textures, and tactile flat-lay moments, almost like flicking through a museum of their lives together, while using carefully matched movement and compositions to draw parallels between their worlds and connect the two stories visually."A big part of making it work was leaning into the natural chemistry between the pair. Having worked with Ed for years, there was already a level of trust and understanding there that allowed us to capture moments that felt genuine rather than overly directed."Pulling together a decade of archive was a massive undertaking (combined with flat-lay shoots at the artists’ homes, two intense days filming in Santiago, long editing days, and an all-nighter to deliver the film the day after the show) but it became one of those projects where the chaos, collaboration, and commitment from everyone involved all aligned in the best way possible. Huge credit to Dan Matthews, Lewis Jones, and the wider team for absolutely slogging it out with us on this one."A vibrant, stirring promo for two of the world's biggest music acts, and a great watch.

Elliott Gonzo directs an utterly riveting performance video in a sci-fi setting for the mighty Muse.Gonzo's VFX-drenched video for the veteran rock outfit's pulsating Cryogen, is set on Europa, Jupiter’s ice moon, with the band in conventional threepiece performance set-up, and in piledriving mood from the first seconds, as frontman Matt Bellamy delivers an ingeniously complex but catchy guitar riff.Against infinite frozen vistas, blood-red rivers and a towering crimson waterfall, Muse perform as a mysterious ring-shaped soundwave object emerges beneath the ice, suggesting contact with a higher intelligence somewhere between alien signal, technology and cosmic myth.At its heart, it's demonstrates how this band are still an incredibly powerful unit, a three-man machine that deliver to rock power to the max. In other words - a classic Muse video.

Kris R reunites with Sports Team to direct the visual for the title track of the band's new album - and it appears that lead singer Alex Rice has been replaced by a very grumpy old man.Having helped put the London and Margate-based alt-rock outfit on the map with their early videos - including Fishing - Kris returns to oversee this visual in which the old man - which is, of course, the exuberant Rice in prosthetics - rails against the ways of youth in Boys These Days. This pensioner happens to have the hip residents of Shoreditch in his sights, blazing a trail through some familiar spots - before gatecrashing the band's performance at Rough Trade East. Esoteric alt-rock band Black Country, New Road are back, and Rianne White's video for the first single from upcoming album Forever Howlong celebrates the bonds between best friends - and the lengths they will go to be with each other. At the start of the video for Besties, three bandmembers - Georgia Ellery, Tyler Hyde and May Kershaw - are at a different communal event where something exciting is happening: Georgia at a firework display, Tyler giving a piano recital, May at her own birthday party. But at a key moment, each of them decide they have to leave, to wander off into the night - over fields, through streets, tripping over dogs - heading to where they would prefer to be: with each other.Heralding the band's new musical direction, Rianne White's charming film conjures a world of gentle quirkiness, championing individuality within a cozy, smalltown community - and ultimately delivering a very good punchline.[imgtoken data:1]
We found the beating heart of a world made better by chasing love and connection.
"Besties came into my world with a dance of feelings, with such an understood concept of exploring the core emotion of taking on the world, and its obstacles to be with her, the bestie, again," she says."Building this with the band took me to so many memories, informed by a collective of experiences from my own childhood, writing letters and maps to my bestie, into formulating our own map and Sliding Doors-effect narrative - charged with the instinctual punch and intuition of - I need to be with my bestie now."Working with Georgia, May and Tyler was a real treat across their performances especially, and quite literally, running from the more conventional lip-sync world, and injecting little cameo moments with Charlie, Lewis and Luke."Knee high in January’s jacket of mud, darkness, fields, street corners and a pack of hounds we found the beating heart of a world made better by chasing love and connection. It’s been such a pleasure, this song was love at first harpsichord!"

Kris R's second collaboration with funk outfit YOURS continues the old school London gangster storyline of the first - with a killer cameo from East Enders actor Sid Owen.Following the Costa del Sol-set Our Love, released in April, the video for Love Might Make Me Better is a thrilling ride, and boasts great performances from all involved as the four members of YOURS (including Maverick Sabre) are back in London, pulling off a caper that brings handsome rewards.[imgtoken data:1]With a cinematic look courtesy of DoP Jed Darlington-Roberts, and assured direction by Kris R, this is an snappy comedy crime drama which elevates the track. And then it delivers a nailbiting climax when the boys finally encounter Sid, playing the London kingpin - who's really not happy at all.So considering how this one ends... can we have a Part 3 please?

Martyn Thomas draws the emotion from stripped-back 80s TV style performance by Holly Walker via lo-fi analogue visual effects. The video for Unsung features a wistful performance from the artist, captured through crafted, drawn-out shots. Thomas then adds distortion, glitches and colour saturation to the footage, a new take on vintage TV in-camera FX. [imgtoken data:1]"Throughout the whole creative process I was able to work really closely with Holly," says Thomas. "Having that collaboration with the artist, exploring ideas and ultimately defining the visual story we wanted to tell is essential to me."We established early on that we wanted to continue the lo-fi analog aesthetic we developed in our last project together. For Unsung I wanted to use video distortion to suggest the blurred, hazy nature of memory and nostalgia.[imgtoken data:2]"We went deep on video refs from the 1970s and '80s. Madonna's Live To Tell intro inspired the opening shot; Blondie's (I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear, played a part in styling; the performance tone was The Carpenters' Superstar; even a scene from Dirty Dancing."Post production got really experimental, coaxing this idea of diffused memory into an almost physical form was a lot of fun. Manipulating the images in real time with circuit bent hardware like a Tachyons+ Vortex or a random kit from the internet, dubbing to VHS and filming an old CRT TV."There is a lack of control with analog glitching, so a lot of happy mistakes occurred - and now I have all this weird equipment in my studio."

Pregoblin's Alex Sebley goes on a leisurely trip to La Rochelle in France with none other than Pete Doherty, in Niall Trask's breezy promo for the former Fat White Family collaborator's new project. Doherty took time out of his busy schedule of touring and recording with The Libertines and touring with French songwriter/producer Frederic Lo, to contribute vocals to These Hands AKA Danny The Knife, with the lyrical content of the song focussing on themes of loneliness and a lack of fulfilment.Backdropped by beautiful coastal views, the video plays out like a joyous buddy road trip, and if you didn't know better, this could be any pair of friends going about their holiday - and that's the beauty of the video.[imgtoken data:1]"Budget allowed us: 800ft of film, two returns to La Rochelle, an Airbnb and 24 hours in La Rochelle," explains Trask. "With no producer, I felt like my year 7 teacher on the South of France trip, trying to herd Peter Doherty and Alex Sebley around town whilst keeping them out of trouble."‘Be cool and don’t sound too bossy in front of Pete Doherty’ I thought to myself as I hurried him to finish his coffee as we lost daylight."Small fact: On my year 7 trip I smuggled a flick-knife in a pair of swimming trunks I was wearing under my shorts, praying that the blade wouldn’t unleash in my trunks as I waddled past the makeshift teacher security that were searching all the boys, finding fire crackers and BB guns."

Sam Taylor reunites with Fontaines DC frontman Grian Chatten, for this moving promo for All Of The People. Taken from Chatten's debut solo album, the video examines what it means to be human, and how we break out of the cycle of unconscious routine to find freedom. “Taking inspiration from Lars Von Trier, George Orwell, Billy Wilder, our film analyses loneliness, self doubt then acceptance, appreciation and human connection," Taylor mentions. With a grungy dystopian aesthetic, the video emphasises the often restrained nature of the human experience. However, the use of light pastel colours and the romantic textures of shooting on film give the film a hopeful streak, which is embodied by the characters as the video progresses. This is the third collaboration between Taylor and Chatten, with the previous two videos being for Fontaines D.C. - Roman Holiday and I Love You.

Niall Trask completes the third part of his trilogy of videos for Eyes Of Others - and this one really does get the most from shooting the series in the rural Norway in winter. It also puts the artist - real name John Bryden - through the kind of endurance test that recalls Thom Yorke's experience making the video for Radiohead's No Surprises. When he nearly drowned. In this case the video for Once, Twice, Thrice is a totally captivating one-shot reveal. The camera draws out from a close-up of Bryden's eyes, to show what appears to be a snow-covered field behind him. But then we find that it's actually a frozen lake - and Bryden is chest deep in the icy waters. How did this happen? Did Scotland's latest exponent of groovy indie-electronica survive the experience? Thankfully, yes - and he explains all here.[imgtoken data:1] "This video began as the mad and bad idea of Simon, our Norwegian host at The Betty Fjord Clinic. He had a mate who had an ice hole in one of the neighbouring lakes. Niall phoned me up in advance of the trip, asking if I’d be up for getting in the water for the duration of the video. I said 'Yes - I do my own stunts'. "I thought I’d better get into training. Like Pierce Brosman prepping for the ski chase scene atop the snowy Caucasus in The World Is Not Enough. I’d be ready."I began taking cold baths at home - miserable - and swimming in the sea at Wardie Bay, Edinburgh - also miserable. I never quite reached those zen awakenings that you hear Wim Hof followers go on and on and on about. But I could feel my tolerance for cold water steadily increasing so I hoped I could pull it off on the day with the help of some adrenaline.
What if I died? Pulled under the ice by some invisible current...
"Three weeks later, it’s January 18th and we are off to Norway, using The Betty Fjord Clinic as our base. The clinic is a residential recording studio tucked away in the Søndre Land region. It is also equipped with sauna and a host who offers good times and a can-do approach to everything. "Cut to the morning of the shoot. I was under strict instruction by Simon to stay in the sauna while the small crew went to set up the shot. After a leisurely hour of sauntering in and out of the sauna, he appeared, saying that the original ice hole was inaccessible due to the previous night’s blizzard. So they were off to cut open another hole in another lake. Fine by me. I was enjoying a relaxed morning. "Simon returned an hour and a half later with his buddy Åge - a retired lumberjack - to say that they needed to pick up a bigger chainsaw. By this point I was getting restless, sitting with those same feelings I get before going on stage, namely; excitement and dread. "I feared after 10 seconds in the water I'd go into a state of shock and have to be hauled out, thus reducing the whole thing to one big waste of time and money. Further, what if I died? Pulled under the ice by some invisible current. I felt a sense of embarrassment around my imagined future death. I began to feel sorry for Niall who would probably feel responsible as producer/director, his life ruined by guilt. "Anyway I was spiraling a bit so I reminded myself to have faith in my training. I found comfort in some words of affirmation, my mantra if you will: ‘don’t worry about it, you’ll be fine, don’t worry about anything at all, ever.’ Simon finally returned early-afternoon to announce that the hole was ready. I got into his toasty car and requested some ambient music for the journey. We put on Brian Eno’s Music for Airports. All going to plan, I’d be at the airport the following day. "Arriving, I walked across the frozen lake and observed the ice hole. I’d imagined something more pure and pristine. It looked like there had been a struggle, with scraggly blocks of ice strewn about the entrance and there was a lingering odour of 2-stroke fuel in the air. The water was murky, equipment had already been lost to the water in the form of an ice fishing drill, it was -10 degrees Celsius and they all looked knackered. "I stripped down to my favourite swim shorts and pulled on a pair of wetsuit socks that Rob had lent me. Simon said he had a trick. He produced a flask of hot water and tenderly poured the contents into my socks. He then lassoed a rope over my head, pulling it down and around my torso. I was taken aback as Simon looped his end of the rope around his own torso. A sense of responsibility washed over me. We were brothers-in-arms. "Niall was brief and to the point with his instructions. I repeated to myself my ‘don’t worry about it’ mantra and slipped into the water. It didn’t feel cold, it didn’t feel like water as I’d known it before. Was it the hot socks? As everything began to slow down, the camera started rolling and in four and a half minutes we were done.”

It's the first of three videos for Eyes Of Others by Trask - all shot in Norway."This shoot was the second coldest of the three and I needed physiotherapy afterwards," explains Brydon. "A highlight for me was throwing a mild-mannered strop towards the end of the last day on set - somewhere in Norway - after being asked, yet again, to trudge through knee-deep snow and run along various icy roads as the twilight looked especially good. “'Who gives a shit about the light', I said under my breath. Niall asked me if I was alright. Nice touch that I thought. "It took me back to a time when I was an extra in a T-Mobile advert where I was told I would be last in the queue for lunch due to (the lowly status of) my role in the production.
