That's the question Ricky Allen explores in his new&nbsp;promo for veteran rock band Porcupine Tree.&nbsp;The video for Rats Return laments the state of the world today, and focuses on an enigmatic host-cum-autocrat, whose sole purpose on stage is to celebrate his power and achievements.&nbsp;Shot in black and white with Soviet-era art direction and typography, the concept is stirring and&nbsp;thought-provoking, and combines surreal imagery with superb performances from everyone on-screen.&nbsp;

Italian-British band Prescription Happiness collaborate with director AVM - aka Andy Mihov - for a second time, on the&nbsp;music video for&nbsp;Something Decays.&nbsp;Against bold coloured backdrops, we see the band perform whilst the lyrics show up on screen.&nbsp;"The band asked me not to be beholden to any tropes for dark rock/metal music videos and I was happy to oblige," Mihov explains.&nbsp;And Mihov asked the band to perform bare-chested to expose their vulnerability, both as people and artists, in both a physical and emotional sense.&nbsp;"They were self-conscious at first, but we worked together to find that electricity between them and the track," he continues.&nbsp;"It was really pleasurable to work on a video where the driving forces were the raw energy of the track and the performance of the band."&nbsp;&nbsp;The post-production was handled by a motion graphics designer in Puerto Rico, with&nbsp;former Rocksteady cinematic artist&nbsp;Mark Maxwell creating the Shadow Presences which&nbsp;haunt the lead singer at the end of the video.

Andy Mihov directs an exhilarating&nbsp;promo for London-based deathcore band She Must Burn.&nbsp;After a line-up change and a temporary hiatus, the group wanted the music video for new single Incantation&nbsp;to be strikingly different.&nbsp;The compelling concept is given an equally as exciting visual treatment, taking inspiration from films such as&nbsp;Francis Ford Coppola’s&nbsp;Dracula.&nbsp;Explosive in more ways than one, it's a unique and refreshing idea with plenty of memorable moments."I like trying to do unusual things when working on metal music videos." Mihov explains.&nbsp;"I'm a huge fan of hip hop and pop rap, and I kind of always look to that world for inspiration. For some reason, the image I had in my head was of vampires and muscle cars. It was just a scene of this ancient vampire who has survived since the days of Carthage and now roams the world in a Cadillac, kidnapping humans and breaking their spirit before making them her thralls.”"Teaming up with long-time collaborators Tom Watts, Millie Ansari, and Terry Palamara, we set off to tell this story," continues Mihov.&nbsp;"Terry and I developed a precise palette for each scene, in which different colours would predominate in different sections of the video. I carried a big notebook around that was earmarked for each scene – everything from composition, styling, and cinematography. Even the vampires’ robes – designed by the amazing Tia Oguri were evocative of traditional African patterns – calling to the vampire’s ancient origins."It was an incredible pleasure to work with Teta Maria, who is a London-based international performer with the Fuel Girls. She brought so much personality and attitude to the role of the Vampire. The fire scene at the end of the day was entirely her idea. I think Tom and I still growing back parts of our eyebrows." &nbsp;

Following the recent <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2021/02/19/franc-moody-live-lift-ja-humby/69575" target="_blank">Live In The Lift for Franc Moody</a>, Ja Humby's latest in his Molten Jets&nbsp;series is this one-of-a-kind doc and performance film for Shame.&nbsp;Live In The Flesh is another example of Humby combining a brilliantly captured live performance with a distinctive brand of comedy - this time focussing on the character of Chayse Bigwood, first time tour promoter who's capacity for ineptitude is in inverse proportion to the quality of the music.This mockumentary takes us backstage before Shame's big London comeback gig at the Brixton Academyt, with virgin promoter Bigwood attempting to ingratiate himself with the band. The extend of the distastrous promotion becomes clear - no support acts, sparse audience of fleeced punters - while the band watch The Weakest Link before the show. Last-ditch attempts to hide the truth from the band precede what then transpires is a great show which, sadly,&nbsp;very few actually get to see live in the flesh. It's a&nbsp;sad story with powerful live music.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In the manner of the previous Molten Jets shows, this&nbsp;half hour film&nbsp;feels incredibly intimate and authentic, due to the fly-on-the-wall cinematography and observational angles. The energy of the live performance spills over into something wonderfully transcendent and ethereal. DoP&nbsp;Claudiu Voicu balances the stripped-back, everyday colour palettes in&nbsp;the behind the scenes setups with the aspirational, neon washes of colour on-stage, creating a dynamic and engaging aesthetic.&nbsp;Meanwhile,&nbsp;Chayse Bigwood is now under police investigation for the fraudulent VIP hospitality package and his sideline in unofficial Shame merchandise - which is a bit problematic for Ja Humby.&nbsp;"Molten Jets’ affiliation with Bigwood’s elite fashion consultancy and holistic trending clinic - Hotbitz.biz - makes me a person of interest in the investigation," he admits."One thing I can do though is thank the amazing filmmaker Simon Halsall for his editing work on the performance bits. I’ve never worked with another editor on one of my own projects before, so it was refreshing to have more eyes on it. I probably butchered his work in my cut, but whatever, 'it’s rock n roll'&nbsp;as my old boss used to say."

Baby Queen is stuck in a drug-fuelled haze in Homevideo's new promo for These Drugs.&nbsp;Through a handful of surreal vignettes, we see the artist enclosed in an interchangeable bathroom set, isolated and alone.&nbsp;The vibrant colours and&nbsp;elevated art direction provide a clever dichotomy to the lyrics, whilst Baby Queen's understated performance perfectly reflects the solemn, cyclical themes of the track.&nbsp;Packed full of abstract lighting&nbsp;and off-kilter camera movement, DoP&nbsp;Arran Green cleverly gives each vignette its own style and aesthetic, whilst keeping the core structure the same,&nbsp;helping encompass the idea of cycles and repetition.&nbsp;

Myles Whittingham directs a very personal story of survival in his promo for Bugzy Malone's Don't Cry, featuring Dermot Kennedy.&nbsp;Alluding to Malone's&nbsp;near-fatal crash back in March - which left the artist with life-threatening injuries -&nbsp;the concept is presented as two parallel storylines, one anchored in realism and one in fantasy.&nbsp;Representing the fine line between life and death, we see a vicious boxing match, with Bugzy battling against a more powerful&nbsp;opponent, then cutting to see him&nbsp;fighting for his life for real, surrounded by paramedics and flashing blue lights.&nbsp;Matthew Taylor's cinematography is outstanding, aesthetically dividing the two vignettes through the use of contrasting camera movements and strong colour palettes. The boxing match in particular is suitably impactful - directed, shot and edited to be as cinematically brutal as possible.&nbsp;Action-packed, high energy and beautifully crafted, it is a visceral experience which is also reflective - with Kennedy adding his vocals from a hospital corridor, as if he is waiting for news about Bugzy.&nbsp;
