Leo Leigh's debut video,&nbsp;for Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood's new project The Smile, is a singularly intense experience. Leigh more or less dispenses with the causes of a trauma to confront the viewer with the harrowing results. You can only watch and wonder why - while listening to the altogether more gentle Free In The Knowledge.There are a couple of remarkable performances in the video, demonstrating distress and anguish in such visceral ways that it's hard not to think that some genuinely bad stuff happened just prior to when the camera started to roll.Halfway through, there are glimpses of exposition, snatches of other characters, and a ritualistic ceremony, suggestng the power dynamic of&nbsp;this haggard forest tribe. But it's those first two minutes that leave the most powerful impression.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

CC Wade captures Griff and Sigrid's backstage antics, in the light-hearted yet incendiary promo for Head On Fire.&nbsp;To mark this team-up of two inspiring&nbsp;pop performers, the Wade brothers let them loose in a deserted theatre to just have fun - which gets slightly out of hand. They have the run of the place, they mess around dressing up, climb rigging - and then set fire to the place. All without missing a beat of their performances.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Celebrating their friendship and not taking themselves too seriously, it's great to see Griff and Sigrid kick back and let loose - and show a slightly dangerous, even pyromanic&nbsp;streak.&nbsp;The visual feels like the perfect&nbsp;partner to the upbeat track, skirting with edginess - and the talented CC Wade, best known for their work with the likes of King Krule and other hipster types.&nbsp;make good on this opportunity to make their mark in the pop world.

Archy Marshall, aka King Krule, takes an nighttime&nbsp;stroll through Peckham Rye and triggers a spooky, gory&nbsp;Gothic mystery,&nbsp;in CC Wade's riveting video for Comet Face.&nbsp;&nbsp;Co-written by Wade and Archy’s brother Jack,&nbsp;it starts with Archy waking up on a park bench in his childhood home of Peckham, South London, then encountering period-costumed&nbsp;figures running from a wild, terrorizing beast. Angry, pitchfork-wielding locals are soon in breathless pursuit. And a climactic twist reveals the monster is much closer to home than Archy first thought.&nbsp;Their first collaboration since the beautifully crafted, MVA-winning video for Biscuit Town in 2018, this is much more lo-fi and dramatically frenetic affair, but in its way, just as cinematic. The grainy aesthetic, cinematography&nbsp;has a B-movie vibe to it, while the storyline is straight out of classic horror movie territory.The unremittingly murky&nbsp;London setting invokes Conan Doyle, James Whale,&nbsp;and also perhaps, John Landis's own early '80s tribute to classic horror, An American Werewolf In London. Surely we need a remake of that now...

Aneil Karia directs a harrowing narrative set in a dystopian&nbsp;Britain, for Riz Ahmed's The Long Goodbye.&nbsp;Taking place&nbsp;in a nondescript town in Surrey, we are introduced to a British South Asian family in a bustling household- one son is trying to teach his Dad -played by Ahmed- dance moves, whilst the other is cosied up on the sofa with his girlfriend, playing games and chilling out. Several other family members are spotted around the house, with a group of girls getting ready upstairs, and the grandfather&nbsp;trying his best to catch the news on the TV, amongst the flurry of activity.&nbsp;In the midst of the chaos, we see moments that are universally relatable -&nbsp;trying to manage different family members and their short tempers, moving furniture around to accommodate more people for a party. Small snapshots of everyday life to paint a picture of the family dynamic. Having stumbled around with an old chair for several minutes, to the dismay of several family members, Ahmed sets it down in a cramped room, before noticing an alarming scene unfolding across the road.&nbsp;In broad daylight, a group of white men in black uniforms are forceably removing people from their homes. The tone of the video shifts as Ahmed screams for everyone to run for cover, exclaiming "This is it. It's happening now". The uniformed gang catch up to Ahmed and his loved ones, in a truly haunting third-act.This near-future dystopia is conceptualised brilliantly by director&nbsp;Aneil Karia, <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/07/24/kano-trouble-aneil-karia/59936">who won an MVA last year for his collaboration with Kano</a>, and is known for his work on TV series such as Top Boy. Uncomfortable and confrontational, this isn't an overly exaggerated narrative with tonnes of creative license. This is one or two missteps into the future, the potential result of the current political climate and events such as the ongoing Windrush scandal. The surreal&nbsp;transition from happy family&nbsp;to mindless murder on the street is made only more harrowing given its basis in reality.&nbsp;DoP&nbsp;Stuart Bentley creates an authentic aesthetic through the use of natural daylight and documentary-style camera movement, succinctly&nbsp;matching the tone of the project. This is a concept very much based in the real world, and Bentley ensures the cinematography is as unobtrusive as possible.&nbsp;Karia is an exceptional talent bringing important stories to the forefront, and a perfect match to such a visceral concept and track. A one-take monologue at the end of the video depicts Ahmed rising with a newfound strength, confronting the camera directly with the deplorable reality that is staring us all in the face:&nbsp;“Don’t question us about our loyalty, our blood and sweat’s enough / Born under a sun that you made too hot for us / Kidnapped by Empire and diaspora fostered us.”• Behind The Scenes feature on The Long Goodbye on <a href="https://wepresent.wetransfer.com/story/riz-ahmed-the-long-goodbye/" target="_blank">WePresent</a>

Life takes a surreal and introspective turn in the new double video for Beck directed by musician and director Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), and featuring Tessa Thompson and Evan Rachel Wood.&nbsp;Opening with a short clip set to Hyperlife, we are introduced to a hazy diner and the occupants inside. In split-screen, day to day life rumbles on as the diners are each caught in their own moment of introspection- their gazes fixed on the outside world, present in form but not in mind. This wistful moment of thought is the only thing that connects each of the different characters, and the manner in which they exist together without communication suggests they are all collectively experiencing this moment of clarity.&nbsp;As we focus on two women (Thompson and Wood) sitting in a booth by a window, we start to realise there might be more to the story. Neither of them speak, but their facial expressions&nbsp;look as if&nbsp;they are each trying to process complex emotions, which are shifting and changing rapidly. We cut to black.&nbsp;As the second segment begins, for track Uneventful Days, new characters are introduced. A young guy crying in his car, dressed in a Beck t-shirt, a middle aged office worker in a cubicle adorned with Beck posters and memorabilia. Whilst Beck does appear on-screen for an understated performance section, his name and brand appear in several of the setups, breaking the fourth wall as it were. The use of posters, t-shirts and even wardrobe choices that pay homage to previous videos (the leather jacket and boombox from 1996 single Devil's Haircut, for example) is a visual representation of Beck's own introspection.&nbsp;The narrative is very much a mystery- two characters get into an argument at the end of the video, and this is one of the only interactions with heightened, raw emotion in the whole piece. However the main focus here is on the process. The process of life, the process of looking inwards to reveal truths that we might not have found otherwise. We aren't given a three-minute narrative wrapped into a neat package,&nbsp;we are instead shown the b-roll, the filler, the moments of life where nothing is happening.&nbsp;Shot in a hazy, soft style, making great use of the abundant sunlight, DP&nbsp;Ben Carey delivers beautifully composed images, with subtle movement to match the laidback track. The styling and art direction is nostalgic yet universal, transcending the physical location and time, representing a patchwork of moments and emotion.&nbsp;This slow-burner might be light on narrative, but the real draw is the emotion of the different&nbsp;vignettes,&nbsp; which&nbsp;elevates this to an interesting and unique space.

Michael Kiwanuka shares a poignant video for Hero, directed by sibling directing team CC Wade.&nbsp;The song and visual&nbsp;both pay homage to leaders and important figures of the Civil Rights movement in America, particularly the Black Panthers and Black Power movement. References to Fred Hampton, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, JFK, Sam Cooke, John Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Tupac and more crop up in the clip, as well as Kiwanuka in performance.The plot is also loosely based around Cointelpro, the covert FBI program&nbsp;that suppressed organizations and public figures suspected of being involved in or supporting anti-establishment political activity. "Hero&nbsp;is a song about how the gems of this world always seem to die young, and how those who are oppressed often seem to have the most to offer us,” Kiwanuka said in a statement.Superbly shot by DoP Jasper Wolf, the camera is in constant movement, exploring rooms and situations in an almost out-of-body POV. Like a fly on the wall, we are given quick snapshots of stories and encouraged to piece them&nbsp;together.Raw, frenetic and contemplative, the concept is executed perfectly by the Wade Brothers and their collaborators. A powerful work.

And as a result, top commercials director Kim Gehrig has been lured back to music, for this brilliant,&nbsp;gif or loop-inspired video.Like the great dance videos of the late &lsquo;90s and early 2000s, Gehrig&rsquo;s video is a simple but deceptively clever idea that&rsquo;s been expertly executed with the help of the Parisian choreography duo I Could Never Be A Dancer and superstar stylist Vanessa Coyle.In a contemporary twist, however, it depicts a succession of characters whose dance moves are looped - reflecting the rhythm track but with a visual glitch-in-the-matrix. Dear Mr Quistgaard&rsquo;s new music video for XL boss Richard Russell&#39;s project Everything Is Recorded features vocalist&nbsp;Obongjayar being well and truly duffed up by female members of the British Olympic Judo team - but he still manages to continue to lipsync the track.It&#39;s part of a broader Japanese theme in Dear Mr Quistgaard&#39;s video for She Said - that was shot by DoP Tom&nbsp;Townend, making a fairly rare return to music videos. Russell and fellow featured artist Kamasi Washington also cameo in the video, but the star of show is definitely Obongjayar (aka Steven Omoh) and the judo women.&nbsp;&quot;Obongjayar is just such a positive force,&quot; Russell has said.&nbsp;&quot;At the point we recorded the song he had no studio experience but he had great energy and instincts, the song was written and recorded spontaneously, then and there. Making the video was a blast, Steven (Obongjayar) got beaten up by some badass female martial artists, and I got to use my bonsai skills.&rdquo;

Ben &amp; Ross blur the line between digital life and real life in this wild, cartoonish high school prom clip for Duke Dumont and Gorgon City.Everybody loves a story where the underdog gets one up on the bullies. But how about one where the bullies are so consumed by their digital lives that the only thing that can put a stop to them is a bucketload of emoji-spattered puke?Ben &amp; Ross play with layering these new digital realities on top of some tried-and-true teen movie tropes and it pays off a treat in this sharp and entertaining satire for Real Life.
