Following her music videos for All The Good Times and title track Big Time,&nbsp;Kimberly Stuckwisch's short film to accompany Angel Olsen's new album tells the whole story - and features a dynamic performance from the singer-songwriter.The storyline for the short film - also called Big Time -&nbsp;was inspired by a dream Olsen had about time travel shortly after her mother's death. The videos for All The Good Times and Big Time are accommodated within its structure, with their contrasting styles brought together&nbsp;into a coherent whole.[imgtoken data:1]As Olsen's attempt at escape a failing relationship via a road trip hits the buffers, she descends to the dreamworld of a bar where time travel is possible, and time itself is fluid. The linking device is a lightbox she carries around with her. It&nbsp;then becomes the focal point in the third part of the film, for the song Through The Fire.The piece is punctuated throughout by phone conversations and recordings - including a real answerphone message from Olsen's late mother. It's a device through which the director and artist articulate the weight of&nbsp;life's most important relationships. And not for the first time, Angel Olsen carries these emotional issues with a compelling screen performance. She is not only an excellent&nbsp;singer-songwriter - and these three songs are powerful -&nbsp;but also a proper actor.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:2]"When I approached Kimberly Stuckwisch about making these videos, I thought it would be cool to include the storyline of one of the dreams I’d had, and really use it as a way to tell the story of the songs," Olsen explains.&nbsp;"Kimberly&nbsp;added dialogue and events to create a story arc around my dream, to give it a thicker plot, using the music videos within and creating a larger film."The themes of love, loss and processing one's past are aspects that really appealed to Stuckwisch in the preparation and making of the film.[imgtoken data:3]&nbsp;"It's a story that targets deep-rooted complexities," says&nbsp;Stuckwisch.&nbsp;"Such as how our unconscious deals with repressed sexual identity, the hardships of letting go of our past selves in order to step into self-actualization, and the guilt we hold when dealing with loss."For one reason or another, we all have parts of ourselves that we struggle to forgive as well as a part of ourselves we are afraid of exploring or that we think society won’t like—so we push those parts down into our unconscious psyches, into the shadows. This is the story of drowning in those fears before releasing your light."

In the video for Like I Used To, Kimberly Stuckwisch brings us into the separate worlds of Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen, two of the most influential singer songwriters in American music, then draws them together&nbsp;via split screen.The video is nearly entirely&nbsp;composed of portraits of each artist which emphasises their distinctive character. We are brought into their homes - one in the city, the other in the&nbsp;country. Van Etten rarely looks into the camera, Olsen invariably is looking straight down the lens.&nbsp;The song is all about getting back to where you started. But ultimately the pair do stand together in one space, with a sense of shared experience and solidarity.&nbsp;Stuckwisch has done a great job in delivering the message that&nbsp;the individual greatness of these intriguing women is enhanced by their collaboration.&nbsp;

Kimberly Stuckwisch navigates a story of cyclical addiction and depression, in the powerful video for Margo Price's Hey Child.&nbsp;Exploring&nbsp;the scars we carry around from the&nbsp;relentless push and pull of life, and our&nbsp;daily struggle to regain control, the universal themes are stunningly visualised through a heartwrenching performance from Price, and an abstract narrative that traverses drugs, car crashes and jailtime - but ends with a message of hope and optimism.&nbsp;DoP&nbsp;Justin Hamilton uses plenty of visual trickery to breathe extra life into the setups, through simultaneous movement between the character and the artist. It's by no means the first time we've seen the camera moves, but&nbsp;a perfect example of how and when to use them, with a unique, contemporary twist.And the final frame is so important its worth featuring here. Nelson De Castro directs a&nbsp;story of self-reflection for Waze &amp; Odyssey's Always, that toys with viewer's perceptions - and is not diminished by referencing the&nbsp;classic video for the original track.&nbsp;Utilising a seamless blend of practical and digital mirroring effects, the concept for De Castro's video for the remix of Always - written by Stevie Wonder in the '70s, covered by George Michael and Mary J Blige in the '90s - takes place in a diner, where De Castro playfully switches between different types of doubles. At first it's mirror FX, and then the mirror breaks down,&nbsp;interweaves and disconnect (literally) at cleverly timed moments.The beauty of the video lies in how the skill&nbsp;of the choroegraphy, and the&nbsp;cast - led by the Huber twins, Allison and Veronica&nbsp;- gently emerges.&nbsp;Eddie Inda's wonderful art direction helps hide the subtle transitions, creating brilliantly surreal copies of clocks, sprawling menus that overlap corners and intricate coffee stains.Combined with DoP Jeff Leeds Cohn's complex yet striking cinematography, De Castro has orchestrated&nbsp;one of his most successful videos - particularly in this director's cut. A lonely kid from a broken family in small-town America, discovers a miraculous gift, in&nbsp;Kimberly Stuckwisch and Nelson De Castro's innovative video&nbsp;for Broken Bells, the musical project of Danger Mouse and James Mercer of The Shins, and last year's one-off single, Good Luck.As he escapes from his home, young Ralph (Flynn Zanco), can see that some people are distinguished&nbsp;by a special quality: their bodies become composed of&nbsp;beams of light. These are the&nbsp;people who are ignored and seemingly invisible - just like him. As the boy himself begins to take the same form, the organic nature of the 'light people' becomes even more evident, and confirms that this was not achieved by conventional digital effects.[imgtoken data:1]In fact, Stuckwisch and De Castro have supplemented the rich filmic quality of DoP&nbsp;Andrew Droz Palermo's cinematography, via an extraordinary method. The 'light ray' effect of the figures&nbsp;was created by hand tracing and laser-cutting over 4000 frames onto black card stock to create shape mattes.&nbsp;"Then we physically shined light and haze through each individual frame to produce the stop motion effect, before laying it back over the footage," explain the directors. "It gives it an old school animation feel, all done practically."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The painstaking animation technique creates a look and style that is nostalgic yet contemporary, but unlike anything else currently out there. Beautiful work and top-notch craftsmanship from the whole team.

Kimberly Stuckwisch directs this breakneck video for Samm Henshaw, a criminal romance with a genre-bending twist.Two loved-up outlaws hit the road with a hostage, Samm Henshaw, in tow. Without sparing a thought for the performer bundled in the boot of their car, they conduct their spirited romance in hideouts along the open road. You know this story, but you’ve never seen it like this.&nbsp;Producer-turned-director Kimberly Stuckwisch plays a neat trick throughout the video. She gives you a scenario you understand, then pulls the rug out from under it. You think you’re watching a breezy roadside romance. Then, suddenly, you’re in the dark comedic mode of Tarantino. Just when you’ve accepted this new scenario, the fabric of this world begins to tear apart again and again.This puzzling Chinese box structure is even more impressive when you consider that these seemingly disparate scenarios all connect back to the conceit of Henshaw’s song "Set our eyes west /&nbsp;chase the sunset … You're the whole world and the world is mine.”The World is Mine picked up a Gold at Kinsale, and it’s easy to see why. Henshaw is a reliably magnetic performer. We last saw him <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/02/07/samm-henshaw-ft-earthgang-church-chris-muir-carlos-lopez-estrada/57242">skating down the road on a hovering cloud</a>, and it’s reassuring to know he can give an equally compelling performance handcuffed to a pipe in a cupboard. Drew Bienemann’s camera swoops and hovers loosely around the performers, and compounded by Nour Oubeid’s lightning speed edit, this gives the video the dangerous energy of a whirlwind romance. Finally, the VFX, by Vitaly Verlov, are a triumph.
