After scooping prestigious Cannes Lions this year for&nbsp;<a href="https://somesuch.co/uk/directors/kim-gehrig/reel/libresse-viva-la-vulva/" onclick="window.open(this.href, '', 'resizable=no,status=no,location=no,toolbar=no,menubar=no,fullscreen=no,scrollbars=no,dependent=no'); return false;">Viva La Vulva</a>, her music video-like ad for Libresse, Kim Gehrig makes a rare return to music videos proper for Alabama Shakes' singer Brittney Howard's solo debut single, and celebrates everyday life courtesy of of one of Hollywood's most likeable everyday heroes, Terry Crews.The redoubtable star of Everybody Hates Chris,&nbsp;Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Expendables&nbsp;movie series, and more, plays a weary working man&nbsp;who clocks off at the factory, and makes his way home, via a trip to the supermarket - and all the while taking on&nbsp;lipsync duties on Howard's song&nbsp;Stay High. We find that this ordinary day in Athens, Alabama (Howard's hometown) starts to be sprinkled with a certain magic, as his fellow citizens, and aspects of the world start tuning in and contributing to Crew's&nbsp;performance.The video is a really wonderfully subtle combination of realism and fantasy and the result is pure Gehrig. Like her <a href="https://somesuch.co/uk/directors/kim-gehrig/reel/sport-england-this-girl-can/" target="_blank">This Girl Can</a>&nbsp;ad&nbsp;for Sports England, the magic does come from a real place, and she offers the viewer the chance to see things and make a greater than usual, positive response of their own.This is also as much about the place&nbsp;as the performance by Crews, who on receiving the singer's personal request for him to apper in the video, agreed and then insisted it was filmed in her hometown. Howard's&nbsp;family and friends appear in the video - which is dedicated to her father&nbsp;K.J. Howard, and both he and Brittney make cameo appearances. And this is in many ways a timeless, almost Capra-esque&nbsp;portrait of smalltown America, about a real community. Ultimately it tells us that, a place is more than what appears in the headlines. Just like everywhere else,&nbsp;it is about the people.

And as a result, top commercials director Kim Gehrig has been lured back to music, for this brilliant,&nbsp;gif or loop-inspired video.Like the great dance videos of the late &lsquo;90s and early 2000s, Gehrig&rsquo;s video is a simple but deceptively clever idea that&rsquo;s been expertly executed with the help of the Parisian choreography duo I Could Never Be A Dancer and superstar stylist Vanessa Coyle.In a contemporary twist, however, it depicts a succession of characters whose dance moves are looped - reflecting the rhythm track but with a visual glitch-in-the-matrix. They&rsquo;re gradually layered together into an increasingly surreal mix of manic energy, gif-like dance moves and vibrant colours. &nbsp;

Kim Gehrig collaborated with Terrible Records artist Kirin J Callinan to re-record You Think You&rsquo;re a Man &ndash;&nbsp;originally performed by cult icon Divine &ndash; and create a music video for the track, the purpose of which is to highlight the rise of drink-related violence in Australia, and in particular the &#39;King Hit&#39;&nbsp;- the act of throwing a single punch at an unsuspecting victim -&nbsp;and its dreadful legacy.The rise of the King Hit has led to a several young men dying after being punched, reaching epidemic levels in Sydney, Gehrig&#39;s hometown. That prompted her to explore the crisis of masculinity that lies behind the rise of the phenomenon.In the video, one young man&#39;s battle for self-respect inexorably leads to disaster,&nbsp;Gehrig delivers the story with&nbsp;compassion and understanding, without ever condoning the act.

With the IKEA-sponsored version of Jona Lewie's <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2010/10/22/jona-lewie-man-like-me-and-ikea%E2%80%99s-you%E2%80%99ll-always-find-me-in-the-kitchen-at-parties-by-kim-gehrig/" target="_blank">Always In The Kitchen At Parties</a> turning up on Best Ads of the Year lists everywhere, here's Kim Gehrig latest crowd-pleaser, skirting the border brilliantly between ad and vid. 
This 90 sec viral for the new Nokia music app that allows users to record their own, instantly shareable music, by looping and recording various sounds with their Nokia N8. That means recording anything - including cute yapping dogs that happen to be visiting a doggie beauty parlour in Shanghai. 
It's beautifully done - Ross McLennan shot it, Tom Lindsay supplied the razor-sharp edit, MPC recreate the graphics from the app and composite them to the footage - and surely going to be huge.

A music video-cum-ad from Kim Gehrig that revives Jona Lewie's new wave cult hit, and will undoubtedly sell lots of IKEA kitchens too.
Like the <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2010/10/22/professor-greendoritos-late-campaign-by-chris-cairns/" target="_blank">Pro Green/Doritos</a> tie-in, this uses technology with YouTube reliability to enhance the viewer experience. In the full version you roll your mouse over the props and it tells you what they are. Click on it and you go to another page showing the product and cost (then return to where you were in the vid).
Crucially, this genuinely works as both an ad and a video. Shot in Romania over two days, to complete the task of completing both three minute and 60 second versions, Gregg Shoulder's superb set design was all shot in-camera by Florian Hoffmeister.
Loads of fun. Jona Lewie's in the video and ad too, looking very cheerful. Well you would be wouldn't you

The post production required to create Alison's road movie environment - done at Moving Picture Company - has meant its been a long road to completing the vid too, which Alison referred to in the band's blog. "You're probably wondering where the hell the Rocket video is... there has been quite a bit of post production on this (and very little budget) so people have been working really hard to get it to you as soon as we possibly can." 
Good work people - now I can't get that chorus out of my head.

The fans filmed the Noisettes playing in a disused swimming pool in East London - each one with a Nokia - and in effect became both the cast and crew. 
Now anyone can make their own version of the video from footage that was shot at the Noisettes/Nokia <a href="http://www.shotbyfans.com/" target="_blank">shotbyfans</a> website. Nice little editing exercise.

Following her fantastic video for Wiley's Cash In Your Pocket, Kim Gehrig has come up with something just as timely. And the concept is so strong in Kim's film for Amnesty International - created by Ed Warren and Pablo Escobar at Mother, and commissioned by the redoubtable Ed Sayers - you'd have to be Lyndie England not to be moved by it.
You Are Powerful was premiered at the 2008 Secrets Policeman's Ball, then went public on December 10th to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The film has ordinary people - you and me - becoming integrated into genuine news footage to intervene against acts of violence. That involved four different post houses - Rushes, Smoke &amp; Mirrors in both London and New York, and Framestore - working together to ensure the film was finished in time for the premiere.
Finally, REM donated the track Until The Day is Done from current album Accelerate. Powerful indeed.

Amnesty International’s You Are Powerful by Kim Gehrig

At times like these it's good to see those wonderful folks in the City putting on a brave face and having some fun.
Wiley's team up with Mark Ronson and Daniel Merriweather for Cash In My Pocket sees Kim Gehrig taking up the reins once again, after the somewhat controversial promo for Wearing My Rolex. Wiley isn't in this one either - but this time it's a conscious decision by Kim, who taps into the zeitgeist in the way that the rather subversive Wiley virals have.
And despite the cheap video style, there's something classically Hollywood musical and escapist about it.
A bit like what happened in the last Great Depression...

"When I got the Wiley track in, I knew that this time I had to make a video where Wiley deliberately wasn't in it. The track seemed so apt for this crazy moment in the financial world and I wanted to do something that played with that.
"I had become aware of office lip dub videos and think they're quite ingenious. It seemed like the perfect track to get bankers to sing. The idea was to make the video feel as if the bankers made it themselves - how they would create a video and perform a rap, and make silly officey jokes."[/pay]

Poor old Lily Cole. She and several of her lovely model pals are being imaginatively despatched by some cruel maniac who might well possibly be George Michael.
Sorry, I mean Bobby Gillespie - even though Kim Gehrig's highly enjoyable lurid romp could easily be interpreted (by me) as a wonderfully perverted distortion of George's famous yet unspeakably boring model-fest video for Freedom all those years ago.
However, as Kim explains below, it was really inspired by Italian horror movies.[pay]

"When I was researching this video I spent an entire weekend locked up in my flat watching Italian horror movies. I was home alone and by Sunday night I was so completely freaked out, I couldn't even go to the shop for milk, and had to drink black coffee...
"Bobby was so great to work with. He really got into the idea - although he was pretty keen to be the one to kill the girls himself, and it took a little while to talk him round!
"Bobby is very original in the way he performs and incredibly compelling to watch. The idea of the coloured light corridor was to give him an unusual stage on which to perform. I wanted him to be the central force in the video, and for it to feel like he was almost willing the deaths.
"Katy England styled the video and we went for a subtle 70's vibe. We managed to get great models to star in the deaths - Lily Cole, Alice Dellal, Rosemary Fergusson and Kiera Gormley. Very easy on the eye, and by the way big up the fabulous hair and make-up team of Petros Petrohilos and Eamonn Hughes.
"We shot the video in this really fucked up location; it used to be a training school for monks and while I'm not normally superstitious, it was quite creepy to see all these rooms with the shape of faded crosses on the walls. They also train police dogs there as well, so you never knew what might happen as you walked around the corner...
"The final image of each death was really important. I wanted each one to be almost like the murderer was an artist creating images. I think Lily's chandelier hat is my favourite.
"Tom Townend and I got into the 'giallo' mood with the colourful lighting. We wanted to use strong colours, a bit psychedelic without it becoming too sickly. The art direction, by Gregg Shoulder, also had that retro feel. The most difficult thing was probably constructing the rig for the chandelier to land on Lily's head."[/pay]

Sexual longing-by-the-sea in lovely moody black and white, for the band with the silly name. 
Mostly shot on Southend Pier, which being a mile and a half long provided plenty of fresh air and exercise for cast and crew. Especially crew.
