As part of a series of 'micro music videos' created for U2's new album Songs Of Surrender - where the band have revisited some of their biggest songs, interpreting them afresh - Shan Phearon has given I Will Follow a visual that subverts expectations, and offers its timeless theme&nbsp;contemporary relevance: a powerful snapshot of inner-city drill culture.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;U2 frontman Bono's lyrics for the song - from their debut album Boy, and their first ever hit -&nbsp;were written from the&nbsp;perspective of his mother Iris, who died when he was 14.&nbsp;Bono's slightly revised lyrics ("A boy tries hard to be a man, His mother lets go of his hand, A gift of grief will bring a voice to life.") form the basis of his new performance of the song, more than 40 years since the original.[imgtoken data:1]Meanwhile Phearon's fiercely energetic 60 second visual stands as a counterpoint to Bono's reflective delivery, showcasing boys performing the Drill dance style known as Sturdy. The Drill dance style - like Hip-Hop adjacent 'conflict styles' Breakdancing or Krump battling in eras past - is known as Sturdy."I was thinking about themes behind U2’s debut Boy&nbsp;LP... adolescence, teen angst, coming of age, etc. I thought: let’s reframe these through a modern European inner-city youth lens.&nbsp;I saw natural connections between U2's early themes and alienation, parenting, childhood trauma, teen behavioural issues, other deeper ideas around UK Drill and modern street culture youth.[imgtoken data:3]"It felt visually unexpected from U2 and uncommon in rock/alternative. Danica Arias Kleinknecht directs a breezy dance promo&nbsp;for Kito, Zhu and Jeremih.&nbsp;The video for Follow observes an eclectic handful of dancers - including Caleb Bonney and Stephen Ojo from Beyoncé's Black Is King film - as they traverse the grungier side of NYC, performing in tunnels, overpasses and anywhere that inspires them on the way.&nbsp;Beautifully shot by DoP&nbsp;Patrick Golan, the grittier aesthetic and heavy use of contrast&nbsp;is a step away from usual dance films, which often prefer soft lighting and landmark locations. The choice to flip this concept on its head is an inspired one, and makes for a brilliant visual.&nbsp;

Life takes a surreal and introspective turn in the new double video for Beck directed by musician and director Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), and featuring Tessa Thompson and Evan Rachel Wood.&nbsp;Opening with a short clip set to Hyperlife, we are introduced to a hazy diner and the occupants inside. In split-screen, day to day life rumbles on as the diners are each caught in their own moment of introspection- their gazes fixed on the outside world, present in form but not in mind. This wistful moment of thought is the only thing that connects each of the different characters, and the manner in which they exist together without communication suggests they are all collectively experiencing this moment of clarity.&nbsp;As we focus on two women (Thompson and Wood) sitting in a booth by a window, we start to realise there might be more to the story. Neither of them speak, but their facial expressions&nbsp;look as if&nbsp;they are each trying to process complex emotions, which are shifting and changing rapidly. We cut to black.&nbsp;As the second segment begins, for track Uneventful Days, new characters are introduced. A young guy crying in his car, dressed in a Beck t-shirt, a middle aged office worker in a cubicle adorned with Beck posters and memorabilia. Whilst Beck does appear on-screen for an understated performance section, his name and brand appear in several of the setups, breaking the fourth wall as it were. The use of posters, t-shirts and even wardrobe choices that pay homage to previous videos (the leather jacket and boombox from 1996 single Devil's Haircut, for example) is a visual representation of Beck's own introspection.&nbsp;The narrative is very much a mystery- two characters get into an argument at the end of the video, and this is one of the only interactions with heightened, raw emotion in the whole piece. However the main focus here is on the process. The process of life, the process of looking inwards to reveal truths that we might not have found otherwise. We aren't given a three-minute narrative wrapped into a neat package,&nbsp;we are instead shown the b-roll, the filler, the moments of life where nothing is happening.&nbsp;Shot in a hazy, soft style, making great use of the abundant sunlight, DP&nbsp;Ben Carey delivers beautifully composed images, with subtle movement to match the laidback track. The styling and art direction is nostalgic yet universal, transcending the physical location and time, representing a patchwork of moments and emotion.&nbsp;This slow-burner might be light on narrative, but the real draw is the emotion of the different&nbsp;vignettes,&nbsp; which&nbsp;elevates this to an interesting and unique space.

Director Bardia Zeinali has kept things surprisingly rooted in reality for Troye Sivan&#39;s duet with&nbsp;the ubiquitous Ariane Grande.Troye takes the mic in a communal room, barely gaining a flicker of interest from the onlookers - and when he&#39;s joined by Ariana and the two become immersed in their duet, the room actually empties.Their&nbsp;dynamic duet is in such remarkable&nbsp;contrast to their mundane surroundings, and of course that&#39;s the point. The final shot leading us to believe the entire performance was just a figment of Troye&#39;s imagination.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Smuggler director Miles Jay presents a moving short film for JAY-Z&rsquo;s latest &ldquo;Smile&rdquo;. Written by Miles, the video is a visually magnificent piece inspired by the emotional experiences of Gloria Carter, JAY-Z&rsquo;s mother.Set in Brooklyn in the 1970s, the video explores Gloria living in the shadows as she is forced to hide her homosexuality. We see her flourishing relationship with her female neighbour, which develops into a budding sexuality that can never be realised. Backgrounded by the social and economic pressures of the time, the two women sacrifice living their truths for the betterment of their children.A young Shawn Carter witnesses the vulnerability in his mother for the first time and through her pain learns to smile through adversity. JAY-Z&rsquo;s lyricism concludes with a poem written by Gloria in which she unveils her homosexuality for the first time, revealing the insight of her experience.Smile&nbsp;is a special and personal film, rendered compassionately by Miles Jay and expertly photographed by Stuart Winecoff.
