Amy Allen is stalked by an unknown aggressor in Similar But Different's video for Difficult.&nbsp;Channelling a paranormal, retro-horror aesthetic, the directing duo - Charlotte Fassler and Dani Girdwood - set the scene using an isolated desert location, mysterious in its own right with an overbearing sense of mystery.&nbsp;We follow Amy as she is watched by a shadowy figure and chased by a reckless driver, only to discover she’s trapped in a repeating loop of her own making. The video’s visuals echo the song’s lyrics and Amy’s battle with herself.The mysterious and dynamic video is complimented by its clever use of surveillance footage and nature documentary clips adding an additional layer to the visual metaphor. The duo used production restraints to their advantage, creating a rawness felt onscreen through Amy’s dramatic, dynamic and energetic performance.&nbsp;

A young man shifts in scale as he traverses the city in&nbsp;Douglas Bernardt's video for Gregory Porter's Revival.&nbsp;The visual opens with a shot of the man -&nbsp;played by Jemoni Powe -&nbsp;watching footage of the LA riots from 1994. He shrinks to the size of a mouse,&nbsp;and slides from the sofa, feeling deflated and isolated from society. There is an overarching theme of the battle between oppression and living your truth as an individual, and this sets the scene for what's to come.&nbsp;A contemporary spin on the "eat me" and "drink me"&nbsp;treats in Alice in Wonderland, Powe's journey involves him growing and shrinking dependent on his situation and emotions. One thing&nbsp;that lights his fire&nbsp;is dance, so when he bursts into a club where Porter is playing live on stage, he immediately becomes his usual form, performing knee-breaking choreography on the dancefloor. Ending with a shot of him both as a giant&nbsp;towering over his house, and as a small man at his door, there are clear metaphors about chasing your dreams and finding something that fills you with joy.The VFX from&nbsp;Nash are impeccable, handling the shifting scale and various elements with ease and quality, really helping to sell the concept and ground the story in reality.&nbsp;

Kali Uchis embraces the darkness in UKMVA-nominated director Amber Grace Johnson's video for Solita.&nbsp;Dripping with sci-fi references and imagery, our first glance of Uchis is entombed in a concrete and glass coffin in the middle of the desert. Singing for the first time in both English and Spanish, the artist exudes sultry confidence, and across a series of vignettes we are introduced to various facets of her&nbsp;character.From performing&nbsp;in the white sand with a snake, to hypnotising a guy who is watching her poledance - and consequently kicking him in the face - the narrative is by no means straightforward, but one thing is clear: Kali does not mess around. The artist thrives in these conceptual setups, and whilst the project could have been a little too mismatched under a different director, Johnson executes it perfectly with her style, formed from having worked with some of the top talent in the world.&nbsp;"This song is about healing, freedom and embracing the mixed emotions that come with that," says Kali Uchis of Solita.&nbsp;"I hope my fans feel sexy when they listen to it. I’m so excited to share more.&nbsp;The vibe was sad, yet horny. There’s a little bit of sexiness in it, but it’s also nostalgic."The hook basically translates to, ‘I’d rather dance alone than with the devil.’ I think that just goes back to wanting to feel empowered about independence, rather than feel like, ‘Oh, poor me, I’m alone.’ It’s not really like that.”

And then he goes walkabout, though the corridors of the NBC Studios in New York.And then things get really weird, as the everyday takes a surreal turn. Alex Lill's direction leads us to a rare but very real 'how did they do that?' moment.&nbsp;&nbsp;If Spike Jonze pushed the door open onto the possibilities of subverting a classic TV studio performance with his direction of <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/03/20/karen-o-danger-mouse-woman-spike-jonze/57848" target="_blank">Karen O and Danger Mouse's performance of Woman on The Late Show</a> earlier this year,&nbsp;Lill and his team - including DoP Michael Ragen and production designer JC Molina - has taken it much further.&nbsp;

Celebrating the hungover parties&nbsp;and the surreal party-pop visuals&nbsp;that cement her videos as some of the most standout of the decade, My Own Dance focuses on a motel full of the weirdest and wildest characters LA has to offer.&nbsp;This is Kesha at her most free;&nbsp;liberated and quirky, with attitude to boot. The moments of her performing choreography alone in a parking lot are offbeat yet weirdly charming and intimate. It's great to see an artist strip back&nbsp;to who they are and what they want to project and feel - and if anyone in the industry&nbsp;deserves the freedom to live their truth, it's Kesha.And with pastel colours, daddies and patriotic bodybuilders, the artist is making sure we know she is here to both stay and slay with her new sound.&nbsp;

As well recently directing the video for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/10/30/beck-hyperlifeuneventful-days-dev-hynes/61594" target="_blank">Beck's Hyperlife/Uneventful Days</a>&nbsp;-&nbsp;featuring Tessa Thompson and Evan Rachel Wood -&nbsp;Dev Hynes has also self-directed the video for Dark &amp; Handsome, a track from his own&nbsp;recent mixtape Angel's Pulse, in his musical guise as&nbsp;Blood Orange.This is a minimal but effective affair featuring Hynes's&nbsp;own performance intercut with a tracking shot of a group of African-American&nbsp;schoolkids running happily along a beach, and other well composed vignettes, delightfully shot by DoP Ben Carey.There's also an appearance&nbsp;from guest star Toro y Moi - making a cameo appearance&nbsp;as a video within the video, on an iPhone. But the overall effect is one of poignant nostalgia - exactly the feeling evoked by this&nbsp;sweetly soulful&nbsp;track.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Life takes a surreal and introspective turn in the new double video for Beck directed by musician and director Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange), and featuring Tessa Thompson and Evan Rachel Wood.&nbsp;Opening with a short clip set to Hyperlife, we are introduced to a hazy diner and the occupants inside. In split-screen, day to day life rumbles on as the diners are each caught in their own moment of introspection- their gazes fixed on the outside world, present in form but not in mind. This wistful moment of thought is the only thing that connects each of the different characters, and the manner in which they exist together without communication suggests they are all collectively experiencing this moment of clarity.&nbsp;As we focus on two women (Thompson and Wood) sitting in a booth by a window, we start to realise there might be more to the story. Neither of them speak, but their facial expressions&nbsp;look as if&nbsp;they are each trying to process complex emotions, which are shifting and changing rapidly. We cut to black.&nbsp;As the second segment begins, for track Uneventful Days, new characters are introduced. A young guy crying in his car, dressed in a Beck t-shirt, a middle aged office worker in a cubicle adorned with Beck posters and memorabilia. Whilst Beck does appear on-screen for an understated performance section, his name and brand appear in several of the setups, breaking the fourth wall as it were. The use of posters, t-shirts and even wardrobe choices that pay homage to previous videos (the leather jacket and boombox from 1996 single Devil's Haircut, for example) is a visual representation of Beck's own introspection.&nbsp;The narrative is very much a mystery- two characters get into an argument at the end of the video, and this is one of the only interactions with heightened, raw emotion in the whole piece. However the main focus here is on the process. The process of life, the process of looking inwards to reveal truths that we might not have found otherwise. We aren't given a three-minute narrative wrapped into a neat package,&nbsp;we are instead shown the b-roll, the filler, the moments of life where nothing is happening.&nbsp;Shot in a hazy, soft style, making great use of the abundant sunlight, DP&nbsp;Ben Carey delivers beautifully composed images, with subtle movement to match the laidback track. The styling and art direction is nostalgic yet universal, transcending the physical location and time, representing a patchwork of moments and emotion.&nbsp;This slow-burner might be light on narrative, but the real draw is the emotion of the different&nbsp;vignettes,&nbsp; which&nbsp;elevates this to an interesting and unique space.

The second video for pop supergroup LSD brings the psychedelic animation of the first into the real world, and it really takes flight in the hands of Ernest Desumbila.The director who has done great things in the past combining cartoon-like animation with live action - in particular last year&#39;s&nbsp;ludicrously fun <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2017/06/05/snails-botnek-waffle-house-ernest-desumbila" target="_blank">Waffle House</a> for Snails &amp; Botnek&nbsp; - has conjured a kind of origins story for this superteam for their song Audio.Diplo slips a LSD cassette into the tape player of the old BMW he&#39;s just bought from a slippery car dealer, and finds himself accompanied by cartoon leopards; Sia&#39;s LSD avatar comes alive in a living, ever-expanding balloon character, transforming the life of her young friend; Labrinth wakes up to an LA that is an augmented reality-like psychedelic trip.It all builds to a really uplifting finale, and a fully animated climax which signals that the team have found each other. &nbsp;
