INTRO

No doubt missing their international marketing clout, McFly have re-signed to Universal after trying the indie route, which will see their Super recordings released on the Island label. 
First out of the trap is an adventurous 30 minute film by Julian Gibbs titled Nowhere Left To Run - to accompany their forthcoming album. The film features tracks from the album including first single Party Girl. The promo for the single will be made up of footage from the film and will be edited and directed by Gibbs. 
Mat Cook has edited footage from the film and added typography to create an exciting 90 second Hollywood-style trailer. The trailer was unleashed on McFly's website at the weekend creating a press frenzy, all part of a meticulous online marketing campaign. 
This method of marketing is fast becoming the norm for big releases, with music promos increasingly playing a crucial part.

The narrative of the video is drawn from the street party setting where lead singer Kelly Jones and band can be seen performing, but all is not as it seems and things become darker and more psychedelic.

Stereophonics’ Innocent by  Julian House, Julian Gibbs and Sam Williams

The Oasis boys are back and making a good choice to help them explore their Beatles obsession by working with Julian House and Julian Gibbs at INTRO: House designed the new album cover and the two Julians directed the clip for The Shock Of The Lightning.
It's the visual bombardment we've come to expect from INTRO since their excellent Doves videos - with added White Album-era solarisation - and the canvas really has no limits.
As Julian House mentions below the influences are English surrealism, and the collision of apocalyptic imagery with fairy tales, "pre-pop art" - although he forgets to mention the inclusion of the cosmic kitchen sink.


"Noel had in mind a psychedelic, apocalyptic design for the album. He gave me the a copy of the album which I listened to for a week and came up with a load of punk psychedelic collages which he thought were great.
"Both the album and the video were inspired by Terry Gilliam. The insane stop motion cut and paste collages were from Czech Jan Lenica and the American animator, Stan Vanderbeek. The influences are English surrealism, apocalyptic imagery meets fairy tales, pre-pop art. It's a tsunami of psychedelic English pop art.
"The video for Shock of the Lightning relates to the album artwork, but we wanted it to have a specific feeling of its own. We wanted it to feel filmic. By using stop motion animation it was possible to bring life to an After Effects project, so it could have come out of the experimental 60s.
"Working with Julian Gibbs is great because we both respect each other's opinions and ability. We start with the idea and rough styling, JG will put together an edit and we bring in a trusted team of animators and compositors. We rotoscoped found footage and found an effective way of getting a solarised look that worked well for the band footage.
"Our challenge was to find new ways of using the collage technique. By using the analogue process in a digital setting it gets brought to life. Julian is great at being able to visualise what I'm trying to achieve and finding a way to execute it."

Black Kids star in their very own '80s cartoon, with fast car chases, spaceships, and a big dog playing bass guitar.
Basically Joe + Rollo have thrown the kitchen sink at this: lots of ideas, and it's impressively done.
"The promo is a trippy, nostalgic re-enactment of those emotionally charged 80s cartoon titles that occupy a special place in every young adult's heart," says Rollo. They filmed and animated the whole thing at INTRO.

Black Kids’ Look At Me by Joe +Rollo

In their thoroughly impressive video for Dirty Pretty Things, INTRO's new directing team Joe White and Rollo Wenlock have hit upon a particular aspect of Englishness which strikes exactly the right post-Glastonbury note.
While the DPTs play (in Shoreditch Town Hall) the medieval hippies have come to cavort around the hot, mid-summer city - bringing their ribbons, and their burning wicker giant with them. Good work.
So in my post-Glasto euphoria (actually it ended in Yeovil District Hospital for me, it's a long story) it's all rather lovely.
