Following her music videos for All The Good Times and title track Big Time,&nbsp;Kimberly Stuckwisch's short film to accompany Angel Olsen's new album tells the whole story - and features a dynamic performance from the singer-songwriter.The storyline for the short film - also called Big Time -&nbsp;was inspired by a dream Olsen had about time travel shortly after her mother's death. The videos for All The Good Times and Big Time are accommodated within its structure, with their contrasting styles brought together&nbsp;into a coherent whole.[imgtoken data:1]As Olsen's attempt at escape a failing relationship via a road trip hits the buffers, she descends to the dreamworld of a bar where time travel is possible, and time itself is fluid. The linking device is a lightbox she carries around with her. It&nbsp;then becomes the focal point in the third part of the film, for the song Through The Fire.The piece is punctuated throughout by phone conversations and recordings - including a real answerphone message from Olsen's late mother. It's a device through which the director and artist articulate the weight of&nbsp;life's most important relationships. And not for the first time, Angel Olsen carries these emotional issues with a compelling screen performance. Andrew Donoho dives head-first into hyperreality, and emerges triumphant in the video&nbsp;for&nbsp;Paul McCartney and Beck's reworking of Macca's Find My Way - by bringing Beatle-era Paul to the modern world, and beyond.&nbsp;&nbsp;The retro-tinged video for Find My Way features mesmerising set pieces, flamboyant choreography and, most crucially,&nbsp;one of the most high-profile and surely most effective and enjoyable employments of Deepfake technology (courtesy of VFX outfit Hyperreal) so far witnessed.[imgtoken data:1]Hallucinatory visions merge into abstract silhouettes and endless computer generated environments, amalgamating in a strangely sensual piece of cinema. The 'realness' of the youthful McCartney as he walks and dances through these environments is utterly convincing, but Donoho's approach is to promote and heighten the sense of wonder rather than add a surrounding reality to overly fool or confuse the viewer.And it's a joy, down to the reveal of Beck as the imposter Paul at the end - in fact, 'Young Paul' is played by Jordan Johnston. We are brought into their homes - one in the city, the other in the&nbsp;country. Van Etten rarely looks into the camera, Olsen invariably is looking straight down the lens.&nbsp;The song is all about getting back to where you started. But ultimately the pair do stand together in one space, with a sense of shared experience and solidarity.&nbsp;Stuckwisch has done a great job in delivering the message that&nbsp;the individual greatness of these intriguing women is enhanced by their collaboration.&nbsp;

Joji negotiates a surreal&nbsp;fantasy of escape in his&nbsp;remarkable video for Gimme Love - the third single from forthcoming&nbsp;album&nbsp;Nectar&nbsp;- that's comprised of two distinct parts: the first directed by George Miller (that's Joji himself); the second part by&nbsp;Andrew Donoho.&nbsp;Part one immediately sets a frenetic&nbsp;pace with a rapid-fire montage of a homemade-style video, creating the semblance of a VHS tape recording. It tells the story of a scientist - played by Joji - working his way up the ranks. The location and set design instil an immediate realism, almost producing a mockumentary voyeurism that offers a glimpse into the career progression of this man.&nbsp;And as he climbs the ladder, his character changes. Brief moments of bonding with co-workers are overshadowed by the anxieties and frustrations that weigh him down. As he receives greater recognition for his professional accomplishments, he becomes unhappier.&nbsp;By the time he&nbsp;reaches the high point of his career, promoted to government-level, he is ordering others around and flying into fits of rage - of while also having suffered numerous tragedies and setbacks.This breathless montage of fast-paced cuts is counterpointed by the upbeat pop production of the track, Gimme Love. As the beat transitions into an emotive ballad, an ethereal melody initiates the cut into Part Two&nbsp;- and the immediate change in production values as Donoho's direction takes over.[imgtoken data:1]At this point,&nbsp;Joji’s character hijacks a rocket, and is preparing to project himself into space, while the astronauts are locked outside and the control room panics. A lonely kid from a broken family in small-town America, discovers a miraculous gift, in&nbsp;Kimberly Stuckwisch and Nelson De Castro's innovative video&nbsp;for Broken Bells, the musical project of Danger Mouse and James Mercer of The Shins, and last year's one-off single, Good Luck.As he escapes from his home, young Ralph (Flynn Zanco), can see that some people are distinguished&nbsp;by a special quality: their bodies become composed of&nbsp;beams of light. These are the&nbsp;people who are ignored and seemingly invisible - just like him. As the boy himself begins to take the same form, the organic nature of the 'light people' becomes even more evident, and confirms that this was not achieved by conventional digital effects.[imgtoken data:1]In fact, Stuckwisch and De Castro have supplemented the rich filmic quality of DoP&nbsp;Andrew Droz Palermo's cinematography, via an extraordinary method. The 'light ray' effect of the figures&nbsp;was created by hand tracing and laser-cutting over 4000 frames onto black card stock to create shape mattes.&nbsp;"Then we physically shined light and haze through each individual frame to produce the stop motion effect, before laying it back over the footage," explain the directors. "It gives it an old school animation feel, all done practically."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The painstaking animation technique creates a look and style that is nostalgic yet contemporary, but unlike anything else currently out there. Beautiful work and top-notch craftsmanship from the whole team.

Without sparing a thought for the performer bundled in the boot of their car, they conduct their spirited romance in hideouts along the open road. You know this story, but you’ve never seen it like this.&nbsp;Producer-turned-director Kimberly Stuckwisch plays a neat trick throughout the video. She gives you a scenario you understand, then pulls the rug out from under it. You think you’re watching a breezy roadside romance. Then, suddenly, you’re in the dark comedic mode of Tarantino. Just when you’ve accepted this new scenario, the fabric of this world begins to tear apart again and again.This puzzling Chinese box structure is even more impressive when you consider that these seemingly disparate scenarios all connect back to the conceit of Henshaw’s song "Set our eyes west /&nbsp;chase the sunset … You're the whole world and the world is mine.”The World is Mine picked up a Gold at Kinsale, and it’s easy to see why. Henshaw is a reliably magnetic performer. We last saw him <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2019/02/07/samm-henshaw-ft-earthgang-church-chris-muir-carlos-lopez-estrada/57242">skating down the road on a hovering cloud</a>, and it’s reassuring to know he can give an equally compelling performance handcuffed to a pipe in a cupboard. Drew Bienemann’s camera swoops and hovers loosely around the performers, and compounded by Nour Oubeid’s lightning speed edit, this gives the video the dangerous energy of a whirlwind romance. Finally, the VFX, by Vitaly Verlov, are a triumph.
