"Pane tells the story of a young man starting out at university," explain the directing duo. "Our main character has had a tough upbringing and has never had a party before so he decides to throw one. However, before he does he needs to experience some other student parties first..."

Gareth Phillips' latest work is a surreal, gluttonous and stomach churning promo for Marika, featuring some chaps getting their chops around a awful lot of food, whilst Marika watches. The greedy diners don't have the most delicate table manners and Gareth makes sure to include plenty of close ups that, depending on your personality, will either make you feel very hungry or a bit sick.
It's a disturbing ritual at heart and the last few scenes are a real eyeopener. Here's Gareth on creating the beastly banquet:
"Marika's old school chapel provided the perfect location, and set her up as a kind of angelic figure, witnessing a disgusting feast. The cast were amazing and I can't thank them enough, they literally threw themselves into the bowls of jelly and piles of hamburgers. 
"I felt bad when I asked them to take bites out of the blocks of butter but that feeling didn't last long when I saw how disgusting the image looked. Caroline Steiner did a great job in creating the rich platter of putridity that gradually smelt worse and worse over the course of filming and Ben Coughlan did a great job at lighting the location and subjects with little budget and little time. I'm quite happy with some of the reactions to the video, not many people want to watch it twice, I advise watching it after lunch. Bon appetit!"

Now he&#39;s just dropped another killer for the claustrophobic, twisted, Odd Future-influenced hip-hop of Black Dhalia - a collaboration of rapper/producer Blue Daisy and Hey!Zeus - for the provocatively-titled Fuck A Rap Song.The lyrical content is hypnotically grim and RM&#39;s embellishments over the head-shot performances just make it all the more mesmerizing...

Andy Hylton gets up close and personal with this tasteful and very intimate performance promo for Emilia Mitiku&rsquo;s You&rsquo;re Not Right For Me.Matching the introspection of the soundtrack with a beautifully shot, stylish monochrome vibe, Andy had this to say about the production:&ldquo;Shot around Sloane Square on a freezing November night, Emilia&rsquo;s Swedish background prepared her for the subzero temperatures,&rdquo; explains Andy. &ldquo;She was an absolute star, professional to the end and always smiling and joking with the crew.&ldquo;Emilia shared a love of Miles Davis so she adored the homage to Louis Malle&rsquo;s 1958 film-noir &lsquo;Ascenseur Pour L&rsquo;Echafaud&rsquo;. She gave one of the most heart wrenching performances. Even the sparks were welling up.&ldquo;The catering was especially prepared by my lovely producer, Ebony Maitland&rsquo;s mum, who brought in some of the best home-made chicken, rice and peas which kept the crew working through the night. My caterer of choice from now on. A near catastrophe was averted when Ebony spotted a record company boss about to take a bite from a freshly peeled raw plantain which they mistook for a banana.&ldquo;Thankfully my new baby daughter Holly delayed her delivery in time for me to deliver the video.&rdquo;

"It was important to me and Fazer to bring in a fashion element into a pop/rappers world," explains JaK. "I took Fazer's initial concept and styled it into a Sin City, Bladerunner visual as I wanted to show the world the crazy Fazer. We shot in a disused military hospital in Portsmouth which still had a padded cell which set the mood perfectly."
The dark fashion vibe in the Killer video was styled by Tom Erebout and shot with precision by cinematographer Dan Stafford Clark.

King Charles invites a cast of over 50 from his own fan-base to take part in Tom King's promo for new single Lady Percy.
The video sees King Charles singing to a painting of the mysterious 'Lady Percy' character, who is based on the real-life Lady Percy herself. The video plays out like a dream-like ode to this woman (possible love interest) who never comes to his concerts.
Set amongst the faded grandeur of an abandoned chapel in Peckham, the adventurous promo was shot in one day...

King Charles 'Lady Percy' by Tom King

"After listening to the track for the first time I knew that I would write an ambitious idea," says John. "Build A Fire is one of the heaviest tracks I've heard from Lamb and with its gentle intro, building verses and exploding chorus I felt that the film needed to be as big and epic as possible, achieving the same energy."
 "The shoot was great. I guess shooting a special effects film at night, on a deserted wasteland with no electricity under an airport was both incredibly ambitious and probably stupid, but it worked. Producer Ebony Maitland pulled in an exceptional crew who worked incessantly until the early hours. Richard Van Den Burgh did an amazing job with the explosions and flame effects, timing and triggering each one perfectly with the track."
"Lou and Andy were brilliant. There were times when I could see that they wanted to crack up laughing because the heat from the explosions was so intense behind them but I didn't feel it mattered. If anything it stopped their performance from being too stiff. It was great to work with them both and their energy and belief in the idea was perfect"

Pulsing, dancing buildings and a twisted cityscape form the basis of Pete Falloon's promo for urban pop trio Encore, graded in a sexy blue hue for added atmosphere. 
Directing the whole campaign for Encore from this first single promo through to the album artwork, Falloon explains the ideas behind the project:
"I invented a narrative to accompany the album that gave the band a very subtle super power or ability. Along the same lines of the TV show "Heroes" putting the guys into a futuristic urban ubercity that is on the attack and putting them in dangerous situations.
"I translated this concept into the debut video. The backdrop to the story is an amazing CG city that is constantly shifting and moving. The lyric of the song describes the guys in a relationships where they discover their girl is cheating on them. The twist we put on this "Tit for Tat" situation is that this girl (cameo by Funda - from "Made in Chelsea") is actually a shapeshifter that changes her appearance to suit the guy she's with. Funda is cheating on each one of the guys without them knowing. 
"It is the cameos in the video who are watching Encore's back - Starboy Nathan, Bluey, English Frank, Sarah Jane (1 Xtra) and of course the very amiable Fazer from N'Dubz. They let the guys know what's going on and help them to discover the truth. We use Funda as a shapeshifter to incorporate the QR code element of video. Alluding to the fact that Funda has always been part of the uber city ganging up on them together."

The Vaccines are one of the buzz bands of 2011. Now they have an emotional video for the infectious Post Break Up Sex by Stephen Agnew, who wisely doesn't stray far from the theme of the song: trying to forget your ex by furiously shagging others is fundamentally flawed. 
Having directed a number of impressive vids - like The Phenomenal Hand Clap Band's <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/2010/03/08/the-phenomenal-hand-clap-band%E2%80%99s-baby-by-stephen-agnew/" target="_blank">Baby</a> - Stephen's first outing after signing with Gas&amp;Electric is a parade of terribly upset post-coital people, while the band play on regardless - shot on 16mm by Dan Stafford Clark. 
"Props to Tom and Jess at Gas&amp;Electric," says Stephen. "Andy Knowles for art directing so well that no one could tell where the location stopped and the art direction began. Andy Soup for keeping me in check, and mad props to Dan Stafford Clark for directing the shit out of the photography. High fives all round."

The Vaccines’ Post Break Up Sex by Stephen Agnew

Pixie Lott teams up with a returning Gregg Masuak for her sixth single from the Turn It Up album. 
"I've only been back in the ring for a short while and I was pretty damned chuffed to win the commission for Pixie Lott's Broken Arrow," Gregg explains. "This shoot was mental but fun: one single day for a bunch of different performances that included several costume and makeup changes, a narrative with Pixie and two different guys, a series of dance routines, and a cluster of different scenarios - it was a large call but I don't enter anything without knowing I can deliver.

Pixie Lott’s Broken Arrow by Gregg Masuak

Nicholas Bentley directs this enchanting promo for rising stars Fenech Soler. Shot in the pretty Norfolk countryside, the cinematic locations are complimented with a powerful band performance and engaging narrative. 
"Shooting outside, in the UK is always a little bit of a gamble - usually if you want it to be sunny it's dull and if you want it to be rainy it's dry" explains Bentley. "Luckily we had really good weather to shoot the promo and to me, parts don't even look like the UK.
"The band had already started establishing an aesthetic that mixed masks with a more futuristic palette for their stage costumes. I really liked their look and wanted to build on it for this video. Previously they focused on performance and were keen to make something that pushed them a little bit more by creating something that wasn't overly literal to the lyrical content and moved away from a full on performance video.
"I pitched an idea that took the emotional undertones of the song, their styling and an aspect of performance to create something more suggestive and ambiguous.
"The two day shoot was pretty full on with a number of unit moves to places with tricky/limited access. Luckily I had a really good, compact crew who all dug in and worked it more like a short than a hectic promo.
"We shot it all on the 7D which seemed to hold up well considering it's limitations. In fact I don't think we would have been able to do the unit moves and coverage if we used a bigger set up".

Fenech Soler’s Lies by Nicholas Bentley

Mike Harris has visualized the message of hope and redemption in Egyptian star Maher Zain's song Insha Allah. It's a powerful film, beautifully shot by August Jakobsson using Photosonics and Red One, and it was filmed and recorded in four languages (this being the English-language version).

"I wanted to focus on details of human emotion, to capture the moment of change from distress to discovering inner peace, a moment of divine intervention. Suffering is found everywhere and it seemed a natural choice to create scenes that could be from many different places in the world. 
"I decided to bring this wide range of scenes into Maher's performance space so that they appeared in front of him as manifestations of his thoughts. Although we were in effect creating glimpses of people's lives, I wrote back-stories for the characters, which served as a point of reference for the actor's performances, art direction, lighting, styling and make-up. I think this cohesive approach worked well.
"Photosonic slow motion was the perfect technique to engage the viewer to focus on the intimacy of human expressions, to really draw people in. We did very detailed castings, as finding the right range of cast who could deliver authentic performances was key. Slow motion reveals all and I am pleased that the actors did such a great job"

Maher Zain’s Insha Allah by Mike Harris

The FX work is excellent, the result of Asif's association with 1st Ave Machine since last year (it's also produced commercials and short films, including Rerun, being screened at this year's onedotzero). Lead 3D artist Mike Merron and his team created a lavish banquet complete with live sea creatures and a mysterious dining companion, shrinking rooms, a library tornado and an escalator-like staircase.
The video has Emilie roaming the halls of a Victorian mansion, and discovering she faces a different trap within each room. "When I heard the song, I pictured a bearded man in a general's suit," Asif says.
"I wanted a historical mansion with a bit of a twist. I originally thought of the general as trying to entice and trap Emilie in a dream, and this led to the mansion itself attempting to trap her.
"Throughout the video she is fighting to get out, but as she goes on, she realizes that she has the power to travel through walls and is able to escape."
