Desert Mountain Tribe go galactic in an effects-laden labour of love that&#39;s been a year in the making for the director Daniel Turner.This is a performance video with a difference, linking to the songtitle Interstellar. Turner has the band effectively as a heavenly body, spinning in outer space, and that was achieved&nbsp;by stitching together footage from a multi-camera shoot. Without much money, it required a lot of time to figure it out and execute the FX in post, as he explains below. Certainly a case of stretching the space-time continuum.&nbsp;

Harry Cauty has directed this surprising, strange, somewhat unsettling&nbsp;take on a dance video for&nbsp;Jack Eye Jones&#39; Fire In Your Soul, that sees a group of friends meeting up and hanging out before becoming infected with a horrific disease.Aside from the alarming symptom of coughing up blood, it also&nbsp;causes an outbreak of bold,&nbsp;spastic&nbsp;dance moves. Playing on the tension between serious drama and playful, collective dancing the video keeps the viewer guessing at the nature of the video&#39;s&nbsp;genre.&nbsp;

Belgian hiphop star Stromae has explored the&nbsp;dramatic conflict&nbsp;raised in his music in a number of excellent music videos. Having&nbsp;gone to a film school to study sound,&nbsp;and exposed to the power of the visual medium, he&#39;s professed to writing music with strong visual concepts in mind.Now, after the excellent vids for&nbsp;<a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2013/12/20/stromae-tous-les-memes-henry-scholfield" target="_blank">Tous Les Memes</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiKj0Z_Xnjc" target="_blank">Papaoutai</a>&nbsp;and others, Stromae has broken new ground again, by recruiting Sylvain Chomet, the&nbsp;BAFTA&nbsp;and César-winning director of The Triplets of Belleville, L&#39;illusionniste,&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Old Lady and the Pigeons,&nbsp;to direct his video for Carmen, and create a cartoon with a satirical bite about the perils of social media.With Chomet&#39;s signature hand-drawn style - and character design that echoes the old Warner Bros cartoon classics - Stromae warns against the allure of the unmistakeable little blue&nbsp;bird. In the video, the one Stromae meets as a kid, just keeps getting bigger. Like nice Tweety Pie&nbsp;turning into the angry Chicken Hawk, and&nbsp;then into a very big blue bird indeed.&nbsp;Set to the tune of Carmen&#39;s&nbsp;Habanera from Bizet&#39;s opera,&nbsp;the song and video parallel the opera by relating the often-absurd behaviour of being in love with those associated with&nbsp;Twitter use.&nbsp;And even if you can&#39;t understand what Stromae is saying (although the subtitles will help),&nbsp;Chomet&#39;s brilliant visuals say it all in a forceful yet funny way. Everyone &#39;on Twitter&#39; is heading for&nbsp;oblivion...&nbsp;

Legendary Frankie Goes To Hollywood singer Holly Johnson&#39;s new single In And Out Of Love -&nbsp;almost 30 years on from Frankie&#39;s The Power Of Love &ndash; has inspired a heartwarmer of a music video directed by&nbsp;Chris Shepherd focussing on the timeless fun generated by that&nbsp;precursor of the selfie, the photo booth.Chris brings forth an wildly diverse&nbsp;mix of personalities into that small box for the three and half minute duration of the video:&nbsp;two young sailors mug joyfully mug for the camera. A &ldquo;stag and hen&rdquo; party crowds into the booth for some wild shots. A dominatrix shows off the tools of her trade, and a pair of wildly tattooed young men looks at the camera with pride; Holly himself, and many more.And as Chris explains below, each of his characters has their own tale to tell. In and Out of Love&nbsp;is the second single released from Johnson&rsquo;s upcoming album Europa.

This time, on an equally minuscule budget, they have made something quite different for Creatures Of Love&#39;s Sutra Sweat:&nbsp;a surreal&nbsp;gross-out, featuring&nbsp;a heavily tattooed chap (the daunting &#39;Big-e O.g Poppa&#39;)&nbsp;demolishing all kinds of food presented to him in the woods, whilst running on a treadmill...

If you thought you could not get an emotional reaction by animating triangles, Tom Jobbins&rsquo; video for Hiatus&rsquo;s We Can Be Ghosts Now will make you think again. The track is based upon a story of a couple trying to find each other amid the Twin Towers disaster &ndash; and Tom has translated this into a sort of geometric retelling of Romeo and Juliet in stop-motion animation, where two laser-cut triangles, one red and one blue, find each other amid warring blocks of red and blue squares.Says Tom: &ldquo;We wanted to keep its elements and emotion but without referencing the Twin Towers, after feeling the connotations surrounding this are too strong, so we decided to use simple geometric characters to abstract it, but still keep a level of empathy. It turned out to be a good decision as we could keep the action simple, which in turn kept the pace fast and the love story whole.&ldquo;I wanted to use a laser cut technique after touching upon the medium for my graduation film at the NFTS. The triangles turned out to be great actors, simple, but emotive. It was lucky we had such fantastic production design (John Jobe Reynolds) and cinematography (Matthias Pilz) it really gave the story that epic edge. This was an impressive task as the triangles themselves were only two centimetres tall! Thanks goes out to all the incredible crew and to Film Club and Th1ng for their studio and support.&rdquo;And Cyrus Shahrad, aka Hiatus, is more than delighted with the result. &ldquo;The song has been played on Radio 1, 6Music and XFM among other stations in the UK, but it&rsquo;s the video that has been the real star,&rdquo; he declares. &ldquo;To my mind, Tom has done the impossible, turning mournful subject matter into a geometric stop motion animation that manages to be as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking. Tom and a small unpaid team of friends worked flat out for months on the project, squeezing in night shoots around day jobs and freelance commissions, and calling in favours to get the thing finished. I personally think it&rsquo;s a masterpiece and believe that it deserves all the attention it can get.&rdquo;

For their no-budget music video for Kid Champion, production company Fenixx &ndash; that&rsquo;s Matthew Connell and Matthew Hoare &ndash; decided to spruce up their one-take performance promo with a few alternating speed-changes to give the video a more filmic quality when played back.Actually, they decided &lsquo;a few&rsquo; wasn&rsquo;t enough &ndash; so they went with eighteen in total! With different film formats and a strong central performance - while Gray Hulbert provides a observing presence, playing his song Where Waking Thoughts Sleep - this is impressive filmmaking, which Dan and his small crew shot (on Red and Super 8mm) over a few windy days last summer at Winchelsea beach.

"The aim of this promo was to create a short story that complimented the simplicity, pace, and charm of the songwriting. My previous videos have been for energetic rock bands with kinetic camera work, flashing lights and fast cuts, so in a departure from this I wanted to make something that perhaps did not say 'music promo' as much as 'short film'.
"I imagined Gray's music as a soundtrack to a film, kind of like the use of Gavin Clark's music in Shane Meadows' films where the simplicity of static shots and storytelling are heightened cinematically by the nostalgic and emotive soundscape. This atmosphere of nostalgia lends itself perfectly to the use of Super 8, and so the idea evolved of having two distinct looks to the promo - the bleak reality of our man's lonely search shot on HD with a filmic contrasty grade, juxtaposed against the warmth and brightness of the happier memories shot on Super 8 Ektachrome, with a brighter, more saturated finish.
"The story developed from the idea of having a quirky storyline about loneliness and happiness set on the south coast, and the lyric 'I wait for you to call'. The image of someone alone on the beach sweeping for treasure appealed to me both as visual and emotive element. I shot the promo last summer with a crew of friends who piled into their cars and despite the rain, headed down to Winchelsea Beach for a guerrilla shoot, armed with a Red camera, £30 eBay Super 8 camera, a four foot slider and a sheet of bounce board. We were determined to make a film even if we just shot a performance video inside our caravan as it pelted it down outside!
"All in all I think this shoot was blessed - it rained everywhere in the UK apart from Winchelsea, where it was bleak and overcast for our Red footage, with the sun popping out for our super 8! We found that the only shop in the UK to stock the discontinued super 8 batteries (which had run flat) was 5 miles inland. I would have liked to have time to include a little more of Gray's performance and not have to rush my DP quite so much on the day, limiting him to zoom lens and a sheet of bounce, but I am pleased with the look and feel.
"The backend of the production wasn't so easy and after a few weeks of editing began the start of a 10 month grading process. Having no budget for post (my entire budget was £800), my grade was done through favours by two individuals that worked very hard in their spare time to complete the promo. Special kudos to Danny at Th1ng who pulled all nighters with me in the Th1ng grading suite to try and get chunks of the grade done before the grownups arrived in the morning. ultimately this one is about story over style, and will hopefully appeal to those who see music videos as a space for narrative as well as depicting 'cool'."
