Daniel Brereton directs a cheerful promo&nbsp;for Villagers' new track The First Day.&nbsp;Embodying the refrain of the track, "The first day of the rest of your life", Brereton presents a handful of colourful characters,&nbsp;who are shown rediscovering the world around them.&nbsp;Especially relevant due to the fact it was filmed between lockdowns last year, the concept visualises a newfound sense of respect for the everyday, and focuses on a young girl who floats around a residential estate, before landing to experience joy in a multitude of different ways.&nbsp;Shot on film, the project has a uniquely nostalgic and universal vibe, which is enhanced by bold colour palettes and sharp styling, and wonderful performances across the board.&nbsp;

Daniel Brereton directs an intriguing video for French artist Chevalrex, set along a forgotten railroad&nbsp;in the post-industrial North.&nbsp;The promo for Tant De Fois features&nbsp;a group&nbsp;of people that remind us of ourselves, at different points in time. We are shown portraits of the group staring wistfully into the distance, before banding together to burn an effigy of the artist, which seems to bring a certain kind of contentment to the characters.&nbsp;Chevalrex - real name&nbsp;Rémy Poncet - appears on an old TV throughout, glitching in a series of Hi8 portraits. His presence is unsettling yet comforting to the characters, building upon the enigmatic themes of the concept.&nbsp;The work is stunning in every way, and the desaturated colour palettes&nbsp;from DoP&nbsp;Simon Plunket and colourist&nbsp;Jack McGinity add&nbsp;a surreal and ever so slightly haunting edge to the aesthetic.

The impact of school bullying is explored through dance&nbsp;in Daniel Brereton's video for Maëlle's L'Effet de Masse.&nbsp;Opening with a young man&nbsp;being singled out and swarmed by a pack of his spiteful classmates, the concept explores his struggle as he is ruthlessly taunted throughout the school day.&nbsp;Fights are imagined as sprawling choreography in the halls, contrasted against the more intimate turmoil evident in Maëlle's solo&nbsp;performance setup. A tragic shot of an empty table at the end of the video is a sobering and concerning climax which packs an emotional punch.&nbsp;Editor Vincent Fleischmann&nbsp;utilises long takes to allow the choreography to breathe, whilst jump cuts into Maelle's performance provide a fresh yet jarring perspective to the concept.&nbsp;

After helming the first few videos from the new album Metronomy Forever, frontman Joseph Mount cedes directing duties to old collaborator Dan Brereton. Very good move.This reunion of the minds that brought us the first Metronomy videos over a decade ago, has now produced a lovely video for Wedding Bells - simple in concept, extremely artful and accomplished in its execution.It's a house party, where now five-piece band are gamely playing in the corner. But this get-together of hormonal teenagers is not what we might expect: its daytime, there's little sign of booze, there's lots of nice party food. Indeed, it really does resemble a much younger person's party.In the midst, one lad becomes smitten with a girl... who is with another guy. But within the logic of the piece - an afternoon nap, a dream sequence, and things getting&nbsp;out of hand in a kid's party way - things may work out...From the location to the casting, art direction and photography in 4:3 by Ruben Woodin Dechamps, this is as good a Metronomy video as we've seen in a while. And lovely to see the band back with Dan Brereton - they&nbsp;always come up with good ones.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

An absorbing&nbsp;romance, with ups and downs as befitting the title of Naughty Boy&#39;s returning single, from Daniel Brereton.Shot in bustling Morocco, Brereton&#39;s love story unfolds to the evocative vocals of Emeli Sandé on Bungee Jumping. Cultural differences between the boy and girl are revealed, and treated in a realistic way, with strong characterisation, and excellent performances from Ruby Barker and Haroun Cherkaoui.Ultimately the strength of the piece lies in how it stresses that the bonds of love are stronger than anything, in a sophisticated rather than superficial fashion. And that makes it a&nbsp;very rewarding watch.

Daniel Brereton directs a procession of the decorated and the bizarre in this cool clip for Sundara Karma.As far as subgenres of music videos go, I'd rank&nbsp;cool funerals&nbsp;pretty highly. The Kills had the market cornered on it recently with their 2016 video for Doing It To Death&nbsp;dripping with cool &nbsp;– but now Sundara Karma have a pretty good shot at the crown with&nbsp;Explore.&nbsp;Shot on 16mm on a sunny day in Abney Park cemetery, Stoke Newington,&nbsp;the procession sees the band and a cast of misfits put someone to rest, and look damn good doing it.Identical twins, lovers, an iguana, an amazing looking hearse and the band performing in between graves makes for a dreamy clip, as Ruben Woodin-Deschamps' gorgeously composed shots slowly creep in and out of one another.

Daniel Brereton takes Bastille&#39;s Dan Smith on a lawless American road trip in the video for &#39;Glory&#39;.Partially a glorious piece of road-movie Americana and partially a study in the shaping of memories - Brereton&#39;s video sees a couple (Bastille&#39;s Dan Smith and actress May Daniels) lie on the hood of a car and reminisce about their trip. The tales they tell materialise as flashbacks with details changing as the pair misremember their antics. Beautifully shot by Adam Kimmel (whose feature work includes Capote and Never Let Me Go)&nbsp;the film cuts between perspectives to tell a beautifully fragmented tale.

Luke Bather, of this parish, has delivered a satisfyingly twisted tale for Liverpudlian math-rock outfit&nbsp;Alpha Male Tea Party, all about when the American President met a tall dark stranger in an underground car park.Read into that what you will, although Luke says he&#39;s tried to&nbsp;avoid too many Trumpisms. &quot;I cast a dude that doesn&rsquo;t look like him, set it in the past and made it about Satan. Yeah, there&rsquo;s some parallels in there because of course there&rsquo;s gonna be - but I really just wanted to make a deal with the devil b-movie thing.&quot;It was mostly inspired by Crooked, a novel&nbsp;in which disgraced President Richard Nixon is actually a Russian double-agent who gets mixed up in the occult. But even if the actor isn&#39;t orange, you can have just as much fun imagining that it&#39;s the disgraceful&nbsp;Donald.

Daniel Brereton&#39;s video for Drones Club is a carefully choreographed surveillance sermon set atop the toxic wastes of Beckton Alps.Shot on several formats, from mini DV to 16mm and, of course, drones, the clip documents Drones Club documenting themselves as they make a pilgrimage to the top of the wasteland, which has a storied history of pollution and abject failure in the face of regeneration.Dressed like a high-fashion militia, the band dance in the golden hour and shout their manifesto to the city sprawling out below in what becomes a dreamy mixed-format statement of intent.

Daniel Brereton takes us to the streets of Shanghai to complete a trilogy of girl gang-themed music videos for Parisian band Las Aves.The first&nbsp;saw Focus Creeps&#39; follow a team of&nbsp;girl skaters in Los Angeles for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDZLRpAlK94" target="_blank">Leo</a>, while the second (and Brereton&#39;s first for the band)&nbsp;for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYlUeifL3LQ" target="_blank">N.E.M.</a>, featured a sassy group&nbsp;of hairdressers in&nbsp;South London. This time, for the title track of Las Aves&#39;s debut album&nbsp;Die In Shanghai, Brereton focusses upon an all-female, all-in-pink troupe of street acrobats in China&#39;s most populous city.&nbsp;And Shanghai provides a dazzling variety of locations, where the charming girls parade their range of exceptional skills, in the video photographed by Dylan Doyle. It&#39;s also the latest in a diverse range of work&nbsp;helmed by Brereton this year, including for&nbsp;Gorgon City, Julio Bashmore, Soulwax and Stella McCartney.&nbsp;

Daniel Brereton serves up a surprise for&nbsp;Gorgon City&#39;s team-up with&nbsp;Blythe Pepino from Vaults.&nbsp;For all his&nbsp;experience, he&#39;s not a&nbsp;director well known for narrative work for mainstream dance acts. And this is a narrative video with a familiar storyline, about&nbsp;two teenagers sneaking out for a night on the town together.But Brereton has given this&nbsp;scenario his own distinctive stamp, particularly with the casting of two young leads who have the individuality and&nbsp;chemistry that makes their adventure worth watching. And if&nbsp;he&#39;s a director best known for his quirky work for alternative acts, the quirkiness here just serves to make it more believable and human.&nbsp;

Daniel Brereton has directed this cultish vision for New York-based band&nbsp;Porches, which sees them&nbsp;lounging around in a mansion house, sometimes together -&nbsp;other times apart -&nbsp;but not entirely there at all.Playing on the opposite meanings of the chorus &#39;I want to be apart/I want to be a part of it all,&#39; the bandmates are shown isolated from each other but also united by the same lethargy,&nbsp;wearing matching black outfits and&nbsp;drinking bottled milk around a pot of fake flowers.&nbsp;The scene is constructed and fake rendered&nbsp;all the more expressive of a group which is stunted and&nbsp;filled with longing.&nbsp;
