Greg Brunkalla&#39;s new video for The Avalanches is a &#39;70s New York throwback full of heart and soul, that&nbsp;observes the aesthetics of the movies of the time, then gives it a slight contemporary tweak.It&#39;s all set in one New York subway station, and a boy still barely in his teens - very&nbsp;Michael Jackson, circa 1972 &ndash; is&nbsp;trying his very best to win the affections of the incredibly disinterested woman working behind the ticket desk.&nbsp;With amazing dancing by the boy ,&nbsp;a guest appearance by vocalist Cheeba from Camp Lo, and&nbsp;a whole brass section joining the kid to take&nbsp;this grand romantic gesture to the hilt, it seems sure that he must get the ticket booth lady&#39;s attention in the end. Right?&nbsp;

M.I.A. takes the reins to direct her own video for Double Bubble Trouble, and makes something totally distinctive - and very M.I.A. &nbsp;This is M.I.A.&#39;s version of a dystopian near-future in which youth control their technology, and run the world - wielding guns made on 3D-printers, and peace drones floating on their housing estates.&nbsp;Shot on multiple formats&nbsp;ranging from 4K to 16mm to iPhone, reflecting the multiple platforms of communication in the tech age,&nbsp;it&#39;s a&nbsp;riot of imagery, ideas, visual wit, with a&nbsp;trademark whiff of danger.With guest appearances from her track collaborators The Party Squad - together with squadrons of London kids - its an extravaganza of style and tech - and London attitude &ndash;&nbsp;supervised by producers Juliette Larthe and Margo Mars at Prettybird. But&nbsp;it&#39;s that overpowering&nbsp;bombardment of imagery which makes this so cool, and so characteristic of the artist. M.I.A. has knocked it out of the park.

Ben Dickinson gathers together&nbsp;Yoko Ono, Beastie Boys Mike D and Ad-Rock and Yoko's New York artist friends for the promo to Bad Dancer - a track from Plastic Ono Band's new album Take Me To The Land Of Hell.&nbsp;Conceptually based on the painting Yoko creates at the beginning of the promo, the video, which features some pretty bad dancing, was also inspired by Ono's past works including her 1966 piece Ceiling Painting.

Alex Maxwell, who directed the excellent <a href="http://www.promonews.tv/videos/2013/08/08/cody-chesnutt-ive-been-life-alex-maxwell" target="_blank">Cody ChestnuTT video for I&#39;ve Been Life&nbsp;featuring Brooklyn stilt-dancers</a> &ndash;&nbsp;has now got together with Iwan Zwarts to create a very different kind of video, for Savoir Adore&#39;s Regalia.&nbsp;Essentially a studio performance video, the band are intercut with a remarkable landscape made of paper, created by art director Hayley Morris. Not that her works survives the end of the video...&nbsp;&nbsp;It&#39;s another impressive project from Alex, on the side from his day job as VFX artist at The Mill in New York.

And it happened at a El-P gig, in front of a very lairy crowd of ladies. Plus, at some kind of parallel gig, TV On the Radio's Jaleel Bunton plays Nick Diamonds of Islands/the Unicorns, getting girls pregnant just by touching them... So just as insane as The Full Retard. I'm not even going to pretend that I know what's going on - so here's Tim:
"The "Stay down" video for El-P is a semi-prequel to our first video for his "C4C" album, The full Retard. In this episode we discover the origin of how our hero squirrel and internet sensation Mr. Killums, lost his Eye and witness a band battle/mass hypnosis/reality critique performance. Starring Jaleel Bunton of "TV on the Radio" playing the role of Nick Diamonds, the pop star antithesis to the dark light of truth that El-P spews, leading to an all out botox-fueled melee." With the help of programmer/digital artist Ivan Saffrin, Tim captures Amanda's performance by adapting the motion capture camera technology of the Microsoft Kinect. 
Almost entirely focused around her head and shoulders this is a visual experiment in which a lot of manipulated Kinect-acquired data is projected back with the performance itself. It results in some memorable imagery - and the last part, she literally cuts away layers of her skin courtesy of additional visual effects, is not for the squeamish.

One big song from The Big Pink gets a sumptuous treatment from Tim Saccenti, who appears to have taken the naked girls from the band's cover artwork, rebuilt them in ice - and then blown them to bits, sensibly capturing the action at 1000fps. Take that, ice maidens!
Tim has been busy, as ever. His first solo art show, <a href="http://www.partizan.com/partizan/thedarkroom/garden_of_unearthly_delights___d">The Garden of Unearthly Delights</a>, just opened at the Diesel Gallery in Tokyo. And his <a href="http://www.partizan.com/partizan/thedarkroom/ps3__the_playface">Playface</a> commercials for the pan-Asia launch of the new PS3 console have just landed - a brilliantly orchestrated fusion of gameplay faces and sound design.

"The track has mountains of ambience to it, it's quite bombastic, so I felt having a considerable amount of atmosphere would be appropriate, in this case snow, ice, fog, flares and coloured gels. Oh, and slow-motion... Yes it's definitely a music video. In addition this, being a new band, was meant to introduce them as a live presence, so it needed to be a performance video in some aspect.
"Once we designed the lighting, which was quite flarey with lights pointed directly into the camera - light stands were removed in post by Mark Szumski, flame artist - Mark Holmes, the stylist, picked out some amazing outfits that worked really well, texture wise, with the side and back lighting as well as colour.
"I also had the idea that, to match the tracks bombast, we should blow something up. Not having worked with pyro before, it was an intense learning experience. The track being about relationships and their ice and fire emotions, I thought that ice sculptures of beautiful women would be a poetic take and work well visually.
"During pre-pro Caroline Celis, who art directs many of our projects, helped choose poses for the ice sculptures, and she did on-set decorating - including hand painting the drum kit - to match the feel of the piece. The sculptures melted quickly under the lighting we had but became more and beautiful as they did, looking at times like 3D renderings of Henry Moore sculptures.
"During the course of the shoot we found different ways to exploding them, placing detonators at particular places [neck, back, crotch] for different effects - my favourite being the neck-explosion-head-tumble sequence. An interesting phenomena was that, even at 1000fps, there was only one frame between when the sculpture was clear and glassy to when it turned pure white from the detonation and began shattering. It looked like a jump cut.
"Performance-wise Ivan shot with a masterzoom on the red camera which allowed for some lovely depth of field and to get much coverage without having to move the dolly very often, which saved us an enormous amount of time. It was a very challenging shoot - ice, explosions, snow, on a tight budget and tighter timeline - but our producer Brian Graf did a fantastic job pulling it all together."

It's an indie type of pop vid, to be sure, for Chairlift's Bruises. But a lovely song, with a rather gorgeous singer, gets a sensual, très sexy treatment.
"It's not got any weird tricks or WTF moments, which is a first for me," says Tim. Perhaps not - but Bruises is still a big pleasure.
