Daniel Brereton headed down to the Elephant &amp; Castle shopping centre in South London with Swim Deep - a young band harking back to late 80s bagginess, right down to the centre partings - together with an appealing group of extras and super-fans to make the video for The Sea - and achieving an easygoing, happy mood worthy of the second Summer of Love.... 
"The idea stemmed from photos I had seen of the band making the rock horns sign with their hands," Daniel explains. "I thought it would be fun to base a video around people doing the "horns", and getting lots of characters and unlikely people to do it, like babies and grandmas. So I wrote this as a treatment but then as the idea developed I thought that it was better to broaden it out a bit. So the idea is basically people having fun and expressing themselves. It's a bit like the message within Swim Deep's music.
"Emile Rafael (Producer) and Jon Mealing (PM) assembled a bunch of fun extras, including a karate expert, a dance troupe from Wales, a baby, a grandad and tonnes of the bands fans and friends, and we descended upon Elephant and Castle shopping centre to have fun. For me this location is a character in itself, and it was a privilege to be able to shoot inside, and also pretty much do what we want. 
"I also wanted everything to have a considered look to it, so shots were composed symmetrically. The clean lines and concourses of the shopping centre were great for this, but so was the chaos and characters that we met whilst we were there. Then Jo Apps did a great job of making the edit really easy and rhythmical, and we finished it off with a really dreamy grade at Rushes with Jack McGinity."

Django Django&#39;s appealing acoustic/electronic Default gets a delightfully embellished performance video directed by Daniel Brereton, with a big input from the band themselves, particularly David Mclean, who originated the concept, and painted over the frames.&quot;I received a test video done by David, which was a short animation of photocopies of Vinny playing guitar with painting over the top of him,&quot; Daniel explains. &quot;You could see things like the tape holding the image on the wall, and the image moving around within the camera frame. I thought we had to keep these elements in the final piece - even though they were scruffy and haphazard, they made it more interesting. I just wanted to add some scenes and set-ups that were a bit more intricate and hard for my brain to work out.&quot;The shoot was straightforward, as the film is black and white and looks a bit like photocopies, I wanted to get a lot of light and dark areas, I almost wanted to create mistakes with the lighting, like the &#39;mistakes&#39; in the test animation.&quot;Then we edited the footage with the help of Alastair Reid, who did a great job of putting our ideas together, adding his own ideas, and then organising the edit so that we were able to print it out onto A4 paper. We ended up with 8 frames a second, which when printed out came to something like 4300 copies!&quot;It was primarily me and Dave who were to do the animation, and Dave solely did all of the painting, then lots of people helped out including Jim and Tommy from the band. The process was roughly: number each copy; lay the copies out on the worktop in order; stick them up to the wall with gaffer tape; and then Dave paints them... &quot;Then they were put on a separate wall to be photographed and then taken down - and that process was repeated a few thousand times. The whole thing took twice as long as expected, but was a really fun process, and I was really happy to be working with a band so closely, it meant that if anything went wrong I could blame them!&quot;

Django Django 'Default' by Daniel Brereton

Connan Mockasin, a psychedelic musician from New Zealand, teams up with Daniel Brereton for this surreal, expressive number to accompany the oddly serene and rather beautiful Forever Dolphin Love. It involved making human versions of Connan's own paintings, before he travels across most of London in pursuit of the elusive dolphin of love.

"Mattias Nyberg did a really good job balancing the light and colour - I think I have a tendency to go overboard sometimes - and Cesca and Mikyla replicated Connan's paintings wonderfully. I also really enjoyed working with Jason Rayton on the edit. We're currently working on a shortened version for French TV."
