A day from Hell just won't let up, in&nbsp;Hector Dockrill's tragic promo for Chase &amp; Status and BackRoad Gee.&nbsp;&nbsp;The video for When It Rains features actor Jack McMullen as a down-on-his-luck everyman, trying to go about his day to day life to disastrous effect.&nbsp;It all starts with an antagonistic phone call and a cigarette lit the wrong way, and builds to a high-octane climax full of suspense, blood, chase scenes&nbsp;and the opportunity for the character to finally get the nicotine hit he's gagging for.&nbsp;Brilliant work which anchors on McMullen's performance and a Dockrill's keen eye for narrative.&nbsp;

In Thomas Ralph's video for Prospa, the young protagonist embarks on a remarkable journey - after his death.For the UK dance-electronic act's increasingly euphoric Want Need Love, Ralph confronts&nbsp;some well-worn nostrums about the Afterlife, and then gives them a proper rave-style makeover. This out-of-body experience bears all the&nbsp;hallmarks of a seriously psychedelic experience.&nbsp;This is partly due&nbsp;to Ralph collaborating with macro photographers Chris Parks and Roman Hill on sequences that echo sequences from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Altered States,&nbsp;and beyond. New pop hope Griff turns in a splendid live performance of Black Hole in Thomas Ralph's film shot at the newly restored Hackney Church. In the process it&nbsp;shifts from infinite darkness to space and light, and then back and forth between day and night.Griff is initially seen against total blackness - actually a&nbsp;black infinity wall that&nbsp;is revealed as such when the camera moves outwards to reveal the location and the teenage singer's fellow musicians. Then the church is revealed and a sense of space and light streaming from a giant stained glass window is a real mood-lifter.Most importantly of all, Griff reveals herself as a genuinely exciting talent with a great version of this excellent song.[imgtoken data:1]

Ben Howard returns with the first release from his fourth album and a satirical take on the mores of the English landed classes in a widescreen comedy&nbsp;with bite directed by Cloé Bailly.For What A Day Bailly plants the viewer firmly in the English countryside, with a hunting party of shotgun-toting gentry. These increasingly drunken upper class twits are prospective Elmer Fudds, on the hunt for rabbits - which are being protected elsewhere in the field by Ben Howard himself.The fun really starts when one of the party begins to turn into one of the very creatures that he and his pals intend to fill with buckshot. Mysteriously sprouting a bunny tail, prominent teeth and floppy ears becomes increasingly difficult to hide from his boozed-up pals - leading to a shootout worthy of a&nbsp;decent Spaghetti Western.<blockquote>Ben wanted to create a social satire about the vacuity of British nobility hunting parties.</blockquote>“When Ben told me he wanted a dark comedy music vid for What A Day, I was just psyched," says Cloé Bailly.&nbsp;"It's my favourite genre to explore. He wanted to create a social satire about the vacuity of British nobility hunting parties. In his own words, it&nbsp;was a nonsense idea loosely based upon the Old English rhyme, ‘back to back they faced each other, drew their swords and shot each other’.[imgtoken data:1]"People loving to hunt just for the sake of killing, not out of necessity, might as well end up shooting each other and loving it too... But what if on top of this nature took revenge? What if the predator turned into the prey so in this case a hunter turned into a rabbit?!<blockquote>Cloé is a queen of dark comedy - I’m so grateful we got to work together on it.</blockquote>The video was actually shot in Bulgaria - in countryside&nbsp;that could pass for the rolling hills of the home counties.&nbsp;"Shooting in the Bulgarian mountains was intense but Ben, the crew and I were like kids," comments&nbsp;Bailly. "It's exhilarating to play with human emotions in a <a href="https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/huis_clos" target="_blank">huis-clos</a>, to imagine what people are truly capable of. And it’s always so good to see a whole crew getting on board with such a nonsense concept based on animal hysteria and group homicide. And of course, it goes without saying that having a dozen adorable bunnies around makes any shoot sweeter...”Ben Howard has added that&nbsp;“Cloé somehow transformed a basic countryside shoot ‘em up into an amazing tale of delightful retribution. Maxim Kelly teams up with South London alt-rockers Shame to create a masterful reimagining of archive footage for new single Nigel Hitter.Applying deepfake technology onto film from mid-20th century child developmental research, Kelly drops the band -&nbsp;frontman Charlie Steen,&nbsp;in particular&nbsp;- into the world of vintage equipment, whitecoated medics&nbsp;and&nbsp;lots of babies, undergoing all manner of tests and examinations. It's all part of the project led by that man who introduces the film and has his name on the front of the hospital... Nigel Hitter, MD.The effect of this clever refashioning of the past is both funny and creepy - which becomes more pronounced when the babies 'learn' to sing the lyrics of the song, and the human babies' number is increased by a painfully thin baby rhesus monkey. Now we are sliding into David Cronenberg territory of&nbsp;curious institutions, strange experiments and unfeasibly gifted toddlers.You could also argue that the video is also a kind of reflection on the past year - a relentless testing of human behaviour, where the medical profession play a prominent role. It echoes the manner in which the song, which features on the band's new album Drunk Tank Pink (out on Friday, 15th January). As Steen explains, it started life as&nbsp;the band adjusted to being locked down at home, having spent much of their adult life on tour.&nbsp;“Nigel Hitter is one of the vital organs of Drunk Tank Pink," he says. "A necessary pulse. Focused on daily routine, repetition, and how extraordinary any ordinary task seemed to me after coming home from touring. A world of percussion and joy lies within.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And Maxim Kelly was clearly inspired by the lyrics in coming up with the concept behind the video. The way he has executed that idea into the finished work - with the help of his team, including DoP Franklin Dow, editor Charlie Reddie and VFX artist RoBert Chandler - is nothing short of a marvel.
