Directing duo NWSPK have teamed up with Jessica Smyth - aka Biig Piig - on&nbsp;an evocative&nbsp;and sexy promo in collaboration for dark synth track Watch Me.The video features&nbsp;an editorial-style montage of high-fashion styling, dramatic performance and elevated art direction, in a feverish stream of dreamy vignettes that are beautifully executed by the directors and their team, including DoP Sam Hooper and stylist Rebecca O'Dwyer."Jess (Biig Piig) was a wonderful collaborator," declare NWSPK. "She came to us with a&nbsp;treatment highlighting the balance of strength and fragility with femininity. We loved the track and ideas and ran with them, working to create visual metaphor and meaning within each setup."One of our favourites was the opening shot of Jess performing the 'iron cross' on gymnastic hoops - an Olympic event that is still reserved for men in a rather archaic fashion. A night out at a house party plays out in two very different directions, in&nbsp;Sophia &amp; Suzie's absorbing promo for Tom Walker.&nbsp;The video for Freaking Out features Thomas Turgoose as the&nbsp;main character, and follows his experience across the party in split-screen. On the left side, his anxiety and fear is taking over, blocking him from enjoying the night, whereas the right side shows a freer, more confident version of&nbsp;the character in each scene.[imgtoken data:1]It's a thought-provoking concept which&nbsp;brings the&nbsp;themes&nbsp;of the track into focus in a relatable way, anchored by brilliant performances and clever camerawork.In particular, Turgoose is great displaying two different personalities within the same environment. Martyn Thomas draws the emotion from&nbsp;stripped-back 80s TV style performance by Holly Walker via lo-fi analogue visual effects.&nbsp;The video for Unsung features a wistful performance from the artist, captured through crafted, drawn-out shots. Thomas then adds distortion, glitches and colour saturation to the footage, a new take on vintage TV in-camera FX.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]"Throughout the whole creative process I was able to work really closely with Holly," says Thomas. "Having that collaboration with the artist, exploring ideas and ultimately defining the visual story we wanted to tell is essential to me."We established early on that we wanted to continue the lo-fi analog aesthetic we developed in our last project together. For Unsung I wanted to use video distortion to suggest the blurred, hazy nature of memory and nostalgia.[imgtoken data:2]"We went deep on video refs from the 1970s and '80s. Madonna's Live To Tell intro inspired the opening shot; Blondie's (I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear, played a part in styling; the performance tone was The Carpenters' Superstar; even a scene from Dirty Dancing."Post production got really experimental, coaxing this idea of diffused memory into an almost physical form was a lot of fun. Manipulating the images in real time with circuit bent hardware like a Tachyons+ Vortex or a random kit from the internet, dubbing to VHS and filming an old CRT TV."There is a lack of control with analog glitching, so a lot of happy mistakes occurred - and now I have all this weird equipment in my studio."

Ruby Harris has directed a meditation on an encapsulated romance for London-based artist, producer and songwriter Tsatsamis - the first video by the New Zealander since she moved to London earlier this year.This video for Everybody Wants A Piece Of You, feels close and intimate; which is a real feat of dynamics given its powerful backdrop of rolling rocks, towering green hills and foreboding bodies of deep, dark water.'How can I compete with honesty, when I’m the secret that you keep?'&nbsp;asks Tsatsamis, as they plunge alone into icy water, their lover watching from the sidelines. The scene acts as a visual representation of the chill of solitude amongst the maelstrom of emotions within a relationship kept secret. This spectrum of feeling is brought to vivid and unignorable life by Ruby’s creative vision, which is full of near-tangible terrestrial textures and emotional resonance, beautifully shot by DOP Benjamin Leggett.[imgtoken data:1]Most notable is the chemistry between Tsatsamis and their on-screen lover, which ranges from fizzing sexual tension to utter rejection, the full trajectory of a skewed relationship evoked in just three minutes. Combined with an expert grade by Andi Chu, Everybody Wants A Piece Of You&nbsp;is as sensitive and moody as it is cool and refreshing.This is Ruby Harris's first video since the acclaimed and equally visceral promo for <a href="https://www.promonews.tv/videos/2022/11/29/vanessa-worm-lost-memories-ruby-harris/79468" target="_blank">Vanessa Worm's Lost Memories</a>, made in New Zealand before she moved to London. We chatted with Ruby to find out a bit more about her process with making the promo, and get to know her a bit better!Ruby, the new promo feels very intimate. Can you tell us a little bit about how to came to work with Tsatsamis?Tsatsamis asked me to help make their first music video ever! What an honour! We have known each other for five years now - we met in Berlin at the lake one summer through their partner.They wanted to make a video which reflects the emotion behind the song; which is when you love or feel romantically towards someone but that isn’t reciprocated because they aren’t comfortable enough with their sexuality. It is about the spaces between, trying to navigate the question of friendship or romance. We came up with some scenes to play into that emotion while keeping a constant of Tsatsamis performing this beautiful song.You've just moved to London from NZ. What differences have you found working here compared to back home?This project was a special one to start with here. It reminds me of home; low budget but legends working on it! Everyone has been so lovely and generous with their skills considering they don’t know me. But I think I have had to put more thought into communicating my ideas, because I haven’t built up that shared language between the people I’m collaborating with yet.[imgtoken data:2]How would you describe your approach to directing?It changes for each project, but every time it is all or nothing. I love to enjoy it. I feel responsible to try and create an environment where people can do their best work, which I consider the most important thing, because it is not just me out here, it's a whole team. Every step of the way is so exciting and when it’s done it’s done. If you know you got it in the bag, you got it in the bag.What are some of your favourite music videos?I don’t want to share my all time faves, it's too personal! BUT some lit ones which have come out; ‘Point and Kill’ by Little Simz. The one by Amara Abbas for Skrillex is unreal. Radiohead ‘No Surprises’ … I love water. And one-takes.What's next for you?I'm finishing a documentary I shot about my niece who is 13. We went on a road trip last summer, and it’s about her fears and dreams of the world. Jorja Smith makes her directorial debut with the video for Falling Or Flying - the latest release from her forthcoming new album - and&nbsp;mirroring the sultry and soulful sounds of the track, she sets out to portray the dichotomy of falling or flying in a simple narrative that peaks as she departs on a journey into space.Up to that point, the viewer is treated to shots of a solitary Jorja as she performs the song captivatingly to the camera in an underground bunker, in the final preparations for her mission.&nbsp;[imgtoken data:1]Jorja worked closely with her crew and Stink's Head of Music Videos Dom McKiernan to bring her vision to life.&nbsp;"Jorja is equally as impressive behind the camera as she is in front of it," says McKiernan. "Incredibly considered, quick thinking and with just such a positive vibe throughout."Jorja had a clear idea of what she wanted and could communicate it to the crew cohesively whilst also being really collaborative and open to figuring out the best way to crystalise her vision together with the crew.”Jorja Smith adds that the idea for the video “came to mind ‘cause I always wanted to shoot a video in space. Falling Or Flying&nbsp;just made me think of that. I wanted to go up into space with someone I love and cherish, but they didn’t want to come with me.”

Paul Johnson directs a thought-provoking promo for Royal Blood.The video for Pull Me Through sees a middle-aged everyman sat in the driver's seat of a car, unable to move as it fills with water.&nbsp;A cast of characters start to surround the vehicle, looking on judgementally as the driver struggles to make any move at all, eventually sinking into the abyss.[imgtoken data:1]&nbsp;It's a video with a strong mental health subtext, and perfectly visualises the anxiety and fear that can come with everyday life.&nbsp;The textural, square ratio format also harks back to videos of the late 90's, and the aesthetic perfectly fits this thematic choice - the video is far from crisp, glossy HD, and this adds to the haunting quality of the video.&nbsp;
