Spanish director Pablo Maestres directs a beautifully crafted and very poignant parable, about a loveable monster adopted by a human family, for musician/producer Ferran Palau. This music video-cum-short film, written and directed by Maestres, follows the adventure of Snif, a furry creature who inhabits the forest with its partner, discovered by a family on a day out as he samples their spread of cakes and pastries - and then lured back to 'civilisation' with them.Maestres has devised a story that starts as being tender and sweet, but becomes darker and violent as it progresses. It's a homage to mainstream cinema of the 80s and 90s, to a generation of fantastic and misfit cinematic characters. And ultimately it's a story of Snif's tragic decline, as the kindness of the family becomes overshadowed by the selfish attentions of a wider public and media. The film is a terrific achievement. From the filmic cinematography to the ambitious costume design, it is a unique and inspired project that lingers in the memory.
