Benjamin Darville muses on the tension between life versus machine in his latest video for sandy crow, the musical project of Jamie Flatters.

In the video for Pinch, a puppet-like body is brought to life in this reimagining of a medical operation as surreal public ritual. The operating theatre is a real theatre and the doctors are a band of actors and mime artists. As the body becomes lifelike and is raised by a hoist above the stage, the crowd below move in clockwork syncopation.

Flatters, aka sandy crow, says Benjamin Darville has become a visual staple of the project's visual aesthetic was "the obvious choice to direct Pinch" following his work on videos for Regret It and Godard the Director.

"Exploring the theme of dissecting the past, we drew visual parallels between an old operating theatre and a literal stage," says Darville. "This connected the artist, sandy crow, to a darker image - one in which he did not need to be the main character, yet still felt like the orchestrator, lingering in the wings."
